Book Disowned Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Disowned Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Edward Bulwer Lytton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disowned, Vol. 1 of 2 The main defect of Bulwer's weaker novels is the author's self-consciousness. His moral, which should be suggested by the story, - 1eft for the reader to discover for himself and not obtruded upon him, - is exhibited with all the emphasis of terse aphorism. If the reader is deeply absorbed in the unfolding of a tale, what can be more irritating than to find at its very crisis the action retarded by the interposition of a moral disquisition, or a chapter of philosophical talk? In one chapter (lxii.) of The Disowned, some fourteen pages are occupied with the mystic disquisitions of Mordaunt, which the reader, if he is interested in the tale, is sure im patiently to skip. Surely, it is not the province of a novel to teach philosophy; nor can any one be a philosopher without a breadth of view and other qualities which are fatal to artistic effect. We read romances, as we go to the theatre, to be amused, - as a relief from the carking cares of life; and not one reader in five hundred ever vexes his brain with the philosophical problems to which the author sacrifices the continuity of the story. The very principle on which the present tale is said to have been constructed that of embodying certain abstract qualities and setting them in motion to work out some moral problem was sure to necessitate its failure. Nobody with less genius than John Bunyan's ever succeeded in such an enterprise, and his immortal work was not a novel, but an allegory. Certain it is that his eyes had seldom wandered from the face of the young girl from the moment of her entrance; and a charming youthful face it was, with its small undefined nose, lustrous black eyes, well-formed mouth, and high intellectual forehead partially covered by braids of raven hair. But it was the smile that had most of all attracted, for it was the brightest he had ever seen, and the more remarkable as the general expression of the countenance was pensive. She stood now leaning against the cabin door, while her father satisfactorily proclaimed his country, by offering, in very good English, to secure rooms for the invalid, in case he should reach the hotel before him. You say I shall find everything as I could wish it on my return, but you cannot think what a stranger to Bartles I already feel. It will soon be six months since I lived my real life there; during my illness I might as well have been absent, then came those weeks in the Isle of Wight, and now this exile. I feel it as exile, bitterly. To be sure Naples is beau tiful, but it does not interest me. You need not envy me the bright sky, for it gives me no pleasure. There is so much to pain and sadden so much that makes me angry. On Sunday I was miserable. The Spences are as kind as any one could be, but you understand me.
