Book The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation Classic Reprint written by Samuel Bennett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation The intention of the writer of these outlines of the history of Australian discovery, settlement, and progress, is not to. Give a history of every voyage for Australian discovery, or a detail of every thing which has taken place in the progress of Australian colonisation, but to convey in a popular form such a general knowledge of the discovery and settlement of his, country as every Australian youth ought to possess; and to enable teachers to place before their pupils interesting and instructive lessons in a branch of education which has been hitherto almost, if not entirely, neglected. In order to sim plify and condense as much as possible the matter contained in the following chapters, the writer has thought it best not to encumber the text with authorities, references, and notes. Personal anecdotes, and matters of merely individual or private interest, have been introduced or alluded to very sparingly, and only in cases where they were considered necessary to illustrate or explain the condition of society, or to afford an insight into the characters of public men, public movements, or political changes. Book The Explorers of Australia

Download or read book The Explorers of Australia written by Ernest Favenc and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Explorers of Australia: And Their Life-Work In presenting to the public this history of those makers of Australasia whose work consisted in the exploration of the surface of the continent of Australia, I have much pleasure in drawing the reader's attention to the portraits which illustrate the text. It is, I venture to say, the most complete collection of portraits of the explorers that has yet been published in one volume. Some of them of course must needs be conventional; but many of them, such as the portrait of Oxley when a young man, and of A. C. Gregory, have never been given publicity before; and in many cases I have selected early portraits, whenever I had the opportunity, in preference to the oft published portrait of the same subject when advanced in years. Download or read book Explorations in Australia Classic Reprint written by John Forrest and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explorations in Australia As the history of the principal expeditions into the interior of Australia has been narrated by several able writers, I do not propose to repeat what has already been so well told. But, to make the narrative of my own journeys more intelligible, and to explain the motives for making them, it is neces sary that I should briefly sketch the expeditions undertaken for the purpose of ascertaining the nature of the vast regions intervening between Western and the other Australian colonies, and determining the possibility of opening up direct overland communication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Australia The government is administered by a council of old men, the young not being admitted. There is also a class that go from tribe to tribe, and their medicine men. The intelligence of the natives is quite underrated. Their skill and activity in war, and their subtlety as diplomatists, Mr. Lang says, are quite equal to the North American Indian. (having mixed with the North American Indians, I think this is rather exaggerated.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Australia The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed. At the same time it is hoped that due importance has been given to personality. History is a record of the doings of men living in communities, not of blind, nerve less forces. Time fell very far short of permitting us to see everything of interest contained in each; what, however, is missing from our description of one Province will probably be found in our account of another, and thus, we believe, we. Book Australia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Australia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Edwin Carton Booth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia, Vol. 1 of 2 Bay is equally certain; and so accurately did he lay down its bearings and position, that Captain Arthur Phillips, who commanded the convict expedi tion of 1787, and who had been appointed governor of the projected settle ment, after a weary voyage of eight months over waters then comparatively unknown, had no difficulty in finding it, and there he cast anchor. He left it however, without landing any portion of his convict cargo. Captain Cook appears to have been as singularly happy as accurate in his designation of places, their character and position. Botany Bay is a remarkable instance of this. By following his directions, the first seekers for the harbour formd it without difficulty. When they had entered, they must have been struck by the felicity with which it had been named, for the name is a perfect indication of the character of the Bay. Nearly circular in form, its waters lap lazily upon a shore that shelves step by step, and foot by foot, into a perfect wilderness of owers. The high trees are festooned and the lower lying bushes covered with them. They vie in colour and form with the richest parterres of the most favoured places in the world. The ground is carpeted with them, whilst the trunks of the trees and the few stones that lie about are covered and concealed by blossoms. The news of the safe arrival of the main body of the expedition at the Fitzroy River, Western Australia, after a series of forced night marches through what is described as the worst country in Greater Britain, was received with enthusiasm, and then for many weary months the heart of Australia palpitated with hopes and fears, until the announcement of the discovery of the bodies of the dead explorers put an end to the nation's suspense. Download or read book History of Australia Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by George William Rusden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Australia, Vol. 1 of 3 In marshalling the facts which prove how much error has been accepted as truth with regard to the pilgrim fathers of Australia, I have allowed the actors to speak for themselves as much as possible. An author may labour to incorporate as the coinage of his own brain the wit or sense which emanated from those of whom he writes but success in such effort would be, after all, ignoble, and would rob his page of the dramatic element which makes it lifelike. The day will come when men will be glad to know how the colonizers of Australia lived and moved; what were their daily tasks and distractions; how and by whom troubles were created or overcome by what passions men were stirred from time to time how sometimes the blasts of tyranny were resisted by the growing plant, and how were engendered within it parasites which preyed upon its powers and threatened to bring low many a noble bough fitted to adorn it in season, and to render back the healthy sap which, coursing from root to branch, gives health and life to the tree.
