Book excerpt: This study explored the following research question: From the perspective of hospice volunteers what contributes to a hospice patient’s sense of peace in the dying process? This qualitative study explored volunteers’ perspectives on patients’ experiences of dying and what constitutes a peaceful death. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six volunteers from Connecticut Hospice with the aim of better supporting the needs of end of life patients. The findings from this study identified themes related to peaceful deaths for hospice patients, as identified by the volunteers who serve them. The major themes that emerged were companionship, a patient’s attitude, faith, caring staff, and a “circle of love.” Social workers can add to a patient’s sense of peace in the dying process and be the calming influence for the patient and the family. Knowledge of these factors that contribute to a peaceful death will assist social workers in supporting end of life care and will assist social workers in advocating for their patients’ quality of end of life care. This awareness will allow social workers to be more comfortable discussing these hard topics with their patients and families. This awareness of the meaning behind a peaceful death can help social workers develop more comprehensive end of life care plans. The knowledge that was gained in this study regarding peaceful deaths in a hospice environment can also be shared throughout the healthcare system to better insure quality of life for the patients.
