Book Chaucer s Church

Download or read book Chaucer s Church written by Edward Foster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: The purpose of "Chaucer's Church" is to provide clear, concise and reliable explanations of every term Chaucer uses that has a religious, liturgical, or ecclesiastical meaning. It uses a dictionary format, arranged according to Chaucer's spellings, to make information readily accessible for students, teachers, critics, and the general reader. The shorter entries present brief definitions which are more lively and illuminating than those in standard dictionaries or glossaries; the longer entries are in fact short essays, with suggestions for further reading, on broader or more complex topics. In all cases the entries concentrate on lucid and accurate presentation of the meanings that the terms had or could have had for Chaucer and a 14th-century audience. The book is a compact but precise reference for readers of all levels of experience on the vocabulary of fourteenth-century religion, which is often unfamiliar or only hazily understood. A careful system of cross-references guides the reader to related terms, so that individual entries can be further explored in related or larger contexts. The book may also be browsed or read on its own, for the entries taken together, especially the brief essays, provide a coherent introduction to the Christian world of the late fourteenth century. In Chaucer's Church, the editors have succeeded in compiling a volume that combines ease of use with readability and rigorous accuracy. This book provides convenient and trustworthy access to Chaucer's religious world.

Book A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics Classic Reprint written by Shailer Mathews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics is designed to be the ultimate reference book for religious students and scholars, edited by Shailer Mathews and Gerald Smith. From "Ab, Ninth Of" to "Zwingli, Huldreich," this dictionary contains thousands of terms of importance in religion and ethics. While Biblical terms seem to make up the largest component of this reference guide, Christian words are by no means the sole focus of the dictionary. What the editors refer to as "important terms used in primitive and foreign religions" are also included in this collection. While the words of non-Christian religions are not as prevalent as Christian words in A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics, the world's religions are still mostly well represented. A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics is a valuable tool for anybody engaged in religious studies. This book makes the perfect companion piece for the study of any religious text. The definitions are clear, well written, and serve to expand the knowledge of the reader. This dictionary is highly recommended for all students and scholars of religion as well as those interested in having a better understanding of the meaning of religios terms from various religions. Book A Theological Dictionary Containing Definitions of All Religious Terms

Download or read book A Theological Dictionary Containing Definitions of All Religious Terms written by Charles Buck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theological Dictionary, Containing Definitions of All Religious Terms: A Comprehensive View of Every Article in the System of Divinity; An Impartial Account of All the Principal Denominations Which Have Subsisted in the Religious World, From the Birth of Christ to the Present Day Knowledge, in a great measure, forms the true dignity and happiness of man: it is that by which he holds an honourable rank in the scale of being, and which he is rendered capable of adding to the felicity of his fellow-creatures. Very attempt, therefore, to enlarge its boundaries, and facilitate its acquisition, must be considered as worthy of our attention and regard. The present work is designed to promote these valuable and important ends. The plan of conveying knowledge by dictionaries has been long established, and well received in the republic of letters. A dictionary, however, of a religious and ecclesiastical nature was still a desideratum in the religious world; for although we have had dictionaries which explained Scripture terms, yet it is evident these could not embrace the history of the Church since the sacred canon was con cluded, nor explain the numerous terms which have been used; nor, indeed, point out the various sects and denominations which have subsisted since that time. I do not mean, by these remarks, to depreciate the valuable works above referred to: I am sensible of their excellencies, and I have no wish to undervalue them in order to exalt my own. This work, however, is of a different nature; as the reader will easily see, if he takes the trouble to compare and examine.
