Download or read book A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie written by James King Newton and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unlike many of his fellows, [James Newton] was knowledgeable, intuitive, and literate; like many of his fellows he was cast into the role of soldier at only eighteen years of age. He was polished enough to write drumhead and firelight letters of fine literary style. It did not take long for this farm boy turned private to discover the grand design of the conflict in which he was engaged, something which many of the officers leading the armies never did discover."--Victor Hicken, Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society "When I wrote to you last I was at Madison with no prospect of leaving very soon, but I got away sooner than I expected to." So wrote James Newton upon leaving Camp Randall for Vicksburg in 1863 with the Fourteenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Newton, who had been a rural schoolteacher before he joined the Union army in 1861, wrote to his parents of his experiences at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, on the Red River, in Missouri, at Nashville, at Mobile, and as a prisoner of war. His letters, selected and edited by noted historian Stephen E. Ambrose, reveal Newton as a young man who matured in the war, rising in rank from private to lieutenant. A Wisconsin Boy in Dixie reveals Newton as a young man who grew to maturity through his Civil War experience, rising in rank from private to lieutenant. Writing soberly about the less attractive aspects of army life, Newton's comments on fraternizing with the Rebs, on officers, and on discipline are touched with a sense of humor--"a soldier's best friend," he claimed. He also became sensitive to the importance of political choices. After giving Lincoln the first vote he had ever cast, Newton wrote: "In doing so I felt that I was doing my country as much service as I have ever done on the field of battle."

Book excerpt: Major Rupert Stonely came home after a dubious career selling surplus army equipment. Unfortunately, the army didn’t know that. He had also expected to inherit his late mother’s estate; she, it seemed, had other ideas. Rupert was about to be usurped by a glorified-waiter and he, quite literally, didn’t have the balls to do anything about it. Timothy Montague however, did - he just didn’t know how to use them. The Stonely Estate is set in the quiet English countryside, a world away from the problems of post-war Britain. Self-sufficient and off the map, it’s traditions and tranquillity was about to be shattered by the reading of the Stonely will. Rupert Stonely, heir-apparent, found himself demoted (for the second time in his life) to little more than a live-in caretaker. His mother, the Duchess, stout in both heritage and proportions, had taken a lover who had worked his charms into her bed and heart. All Major Stonely had to do, was produce a child and reclaim what was rightfully his. Sadly, his gun only fired blanks. A busty barmaid, a solicitor with an awkward problem, a draconian housekeeper and a trainee customs investigator and amateur bird watcher, all play their part in the unfolding story of An English Custom.
Download or read book The Diary of Jack the Ripper The Chilling Confessions of James Maybrick written by Shirley Harrison and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pages of The Diary of Jack the Ripper reveal the unimaginable - that over a century ago, the legendary serial killer at work in London's Whitechapel kept a record of his bestial mutilations of women. The writer of the horrific journal is James Maybrick, a depraved drug-taking, womanising, 49-year-old Liverpool cotton merchant with a history of domestic violence. In this analysis of his diary, investigative author Shirley Harrison explains all about the origins of the text, the rigorous scientific analysis it has endured and reveals startling new information about Maybrick's shadowy background. All this combines with a chilling confession scratched into a watch, 'I am Jack. J Maybrick,' provide powerful justification that Maybrick was Jack the Ripper. The diary itself is reproduced in full, so that you too can judge whether these are the deeply distributing words of Jack the Ripper himself, reaching out from across the abyss of more than a century.

Download or read book The Civil War Diary of Rev James Sheeran C Ss R written by James B. Sheeran and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the Civil War diary of Redemptorist priest Rev. James Sheeran, C. Ss. R., who was chaplain to the 14th Louisiana Regiment of the Confederacy. Irish-born Sheeran was one of only two Catholic chaplains commissioned for the Confederacy who kept a journal. From August 1, 1862 through April 24, 1865, the journal tells of all the major events of his life in abundant detail: on the battle field, in the hospitals, and among Catholics and Protestants whom he encountered in local towns, on the trains, and in the course of his ministrations. His ideological sympathies clearly rest with the Confederacy. The tone is forthright, even haughty, but captures in sure and steady fashion, both the personality of the man and the events to which he was a witness, especially the major battles. The journal is arguably the most unique narrative of the war written by a chaplain of any denomination and certainly is the most extensive.
