Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A career in the Victorian penal system might not seem to be a source of excitement or even great interest, but for John Buckley Castieau it was the trigger for nearly three decades of diaries that reveal not only what went on behind prison walls but also much about the colony's early history. J.B. Castieau was the governor of both Beechworth and Melbourne gaols as well as, somewhat disastrously, the Inspector-General of Penal Establisments."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Prison Governors

Download or read book Prison Governors written by Shane Bryans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first systematic study of prison governors, a hidden and powerful, but much neglected, group of criminal justice practitioners. Its focus is on how they carry out their task, how that has changed over time and how their role has evolved. The author, himself a former prison governor, explains how prison governors have changed under external pressures, and examines a number of the factors that have been influential in changing their working environment in particular the changing status of prisoners and the development of the concept of prisoners rights, the increasing scrutiny of the press and politicians, competitive elements introduced by privatization of the penal institutions, and the introduction of risk management approaches. Based on extensive research, including interviews with 42 prison governors, this book also explores a number of important biographical factors. The author describes the demographic characteristics of the sample of governors interviewed, including their social origins, educational and occupational backgrounds, their reasons and motivation for joining the prison service, their career paths, and also explores their values and beliefs. In the light of the findings of this study the author also makes a number of important suggestions for changes that should be made to policy and practice, and explores the implications for how our prisons should be governed in the future.

Book The Last Governor Diaries

Download or read book The Last Governor Diaries written by John W Heffernan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Governor Diaries is a virtual record of the author's 30 year journey through the NSW Department of Corrective Services and the many remarkable characters he meets along the way. Frightening yet, at times, humorous The Last Governor Diaries provides a unique insight into the closed and unseen world that exists behind the imposing high walls of the state's prisons. This is a story of some very dangerous prisoners and a few very ordinary correctional officers. In many respects, this a reminder that not all those charged with law enforcement are necessarily saints while not all those who break the law are complete sinners.

Book excerpt: THE FASCINATING SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER Assaults. Riots. Cell fires. Medical emergencies. Understaffed wings. Suicides. Hooch. Weapons. It's all in a week's work at HMP Parkhurst. After 28 years working as a prison officer, with 22 years at HMP Parkhurst, once one of Britain's most high security prisons, David Berridge has had to deal with it all: serial killers and gangsters, terrorists and sex offenders, psychopaths and addicts. Inside Parkhurst is his raw, uncompromising look at what really goes on behind the massive walls and menacing gates. Thrown in at the deep end, David quickly had to work out how to deal with the most cunning and volatile of prisoners, and learn how to avoid their many scams. He has been assaulted and abused; he has tackled cell fires and attempted suicides, riots and dirty protests; he has helped to foil escaped plans, talked inmates down from rooftop protests, witnessed prisoners setting fire to themselves, and prevented prisoners from attempting to murder other prisoners. And now he takes us inside this secret world for the first time. With this searingly honest account he guides us around the wings, the segregation unit, the hospital and the exercise yard, and gives vivid portraits of the drug taking, the hooch making, the constant and irrepressible violence, and the extraordinary lengths our prison officers go to everyday. Divided into three parts - the first from David's early years on the wings, the second the middle of his career, and the third his disillusioned later years - David will take readers into the heart of life inside and shine a light on the escalating violence and the impact the government cuts are having on the wings. Both horrifying and hilarious, David's diaries are guaranteed to shock and entertain in equal measure.

Book excerpt: It's 1975; the New South Wales prison system is in a state of crisis, prisoners are rebelling against what would be later described by a Royal Commission as a regime of savagery and for some inexplicable reason John Heffernan decides to become part of it all by joining the Department of Corrective Services and train as a prison officer. After receiving the most basic training imaginable he is literally thrown a set of keys and set loose to guard some of the worst and most violent criminals in the state. This is a story where prison riots and prison officer strikes became almost an accepted norm, simply an everyday part of going to work. During the author's watch he would witness corrupt police, dishonest officials and even a Minister of the Crown all spend considerable periods as a guest of Her Majesty.
