  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-05-16
  • ISBN : 9780521894357
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Kingship and State written by Christopher Wrigley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precolonial kingdom of Buganda, nucleus of the present Uganda state, has long attracted scholarly interest. Since written records are lacking entirely until 1862, historians have had to rely on oral traditions that were recorded from the end of the nineteenth century. These sources provide rich materials on Buganda in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but in this 1996 book Christopher Wrigley endeavours to show that the stories which appear to relate to earlier periods are largely mythology. He argues that this does not reduce their value since they are of interest in their own mythical right, revealing ancient traces of sacred kingship, and also throwing oblique light on the development of the recent state. He has written an elegant and wide-ranging study of one of Africa's most famous kingdoms.

Book The Diary of A J Mounteney Jephson

Download or read book The Diary of A J Mounteney Jephson written by Dorothy Middleton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a first-hand account of the expedition led by H. M. Stanley in 1887-89 to the relief of Emin Pasha, Governor of Equatoria. A. J. Mounteney Jephson, a typical late Victorian traveller, took part in Stanley’s last expedition in Africa. His recently-discovered diary describes the voyage out of the mouth of the Congo; the journey up the Congo and across the Ituri forests to Lake Albert; the meeting with Emin Pasha; the mutiny of Emin’s troops and their imprisonment of Emin and Jephson; and the journey back to the East coast. Though it fell short of its political and commercial aims, the expedition was important geographically as it solved the last mystery of African topography - the position and nature of the sources of the Nile.

Book excerpt: The Hakluyt Handbook provides a reference guide to the works of the Reverend Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) and a critical evaluation of his achievements as a collector, editor, translator and author of travel literature. In Volume I, part one consists of a series of essays by specialists in the various field with which Hakluyt was concerned and attempts to evaluate his significance for historians, geographers and students of literature and society; part two comprises an analysis of the quality of his selections of material for his greatest collection The Principal Navigations...of the English Nation in a series of regional studies; and part three is a chronology of his life and writings expanded from that in G.B. Parks, Richard Hakluyt and the English Voyagers (1928). Parts four and five (in Volume II) analyse the contents and sources of Hakluyt's three major works Divers Voyages (1582), Principall Navigations (1589) and Principal Navigations (1598-1600), and provide detailed bibliographical material on the works with which Hakluyt was associated. A critical bibliography of secondary works and an analytical list of the publications of the Hakluyt Society, 1846-1973, complete the work. An index of books and articles referred to in the volumes is included. The Hakluyt Handbook has been under consideration by the Hakluyt Society for more than a decade and owes much to the late R.A. Skelton (1906-70). The editor Professor D.B. Quinn has had the generous co-operation of more than twenty members of the Society in its compilation. It is hoped that the volumes will not only have value to members of the Society and to many students of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, but that they will stimulate further research on Richard Hakluyt and a further refinement of our knowledge of Hakluyt's sources and bibliography. The main pagination of this and the following volume (Second Series 145) is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first publis

Book Slavery in the Great Lakes Region of East Africa

Download or read book Slavery in the Great Lakes Region of East Africa written by Henri Médard and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-16 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery in the Great Lakes Region of East Africa is a collection of ten studies by the most prominent historians of the region. Slavery was more important in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa than often has been assumed, and Africans from the interior played a more complex role than was previously recognized. The essays in this collection reveal the connections between the peoples of the region as well as their encounters with the conquering Europeans. The contributors challenge the assertion that domestic slavery increased in Africa as a result of the international trade. Slavery in this region was not a uniform phenomenon and the line between enslaved and non-slave labor was fine. Kinship ties could mark the difference between free and unfree labor. Social categories were not always clear-cut and the status of a slave could change within a lifetime. Contents: - Introduction by Henri Médard - Language Evidence of Slavery to the Eighteenth Century by David Schoenbrun - The Rise of Slavery & Social Change in Unyamwezi 1860–1900 by Jan-Georg Deutsch - Slavery & Forced Labour in the Eastern Congo 1850–1910 by David Northrup - Legacies of Slavery in North West Uganda ‘The One-Elevens’ by Mark Leopold - Human Booty in Buganda: The Seizure of People in War, c.1700–c.1900 by Richard Reid - Stolen People & Autonomous Chiefs in Nineteenth-Century Buganda by Holly Hanson - Women’s Experiences of Slavery in Late Nineteenth- & Early Twentieth-Century Uganda by Michael W. Steinhart - The Slave Trade in Burundi & Rwanda at the Beginning of German Colonisation 1890–1906 by Jean-Pierre Chretien - Bunyoro & the Demography of Slavery Debate by Shane Doyle
