Book excerpt: A masterful translation of the Diamond Sutra—with insightful commentary and helpful historical information for parsing this essential Zen Buddhist scripture Zen Buddhism is often said to be a practice of mind–to–mind transmission without reliance on texts—in fact, some great teachers forbid their students to read or write. But Buddhism has also inspired some of the greatest philosophical writings of any religion, and two such works lie at the center of Zen: The Heart Sutra, which monks recite all over the world, and The Diamond Sutra, said to contain answers to all questions of delusion and dualism. This is the Buddhist teaching on the perfection of wisdom and cuts through all obstacles on the path of practice. As Red Pine explains: The Diamond Sutra may look like a book, but it’s really the body of the Buddha. It’s also your body, my body, all possible bodies. But it’s a body with nothing inside and nothing outside. It doesn’t exist in space or time. Nor is it a construct of the mind. It’s no mind. And yet because it’s no mind, it has room for compassion. This book is the offering of no mind, born of compassion for all suffering beings. Of all the sutras that teach this teaching, this is the diamond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diamond Sutra (Chin-Kang-Ching) Or Prajna-Paramita: Translated From the Chinese With an Introduction and Notes This English version of The Diamond Sutra, translated from the Chinese text of Kumarajiva, owes its inception to successive conversations with a friend, profoundly interested in the interpretation of oriental systems of philosophy. During those conversations renderings into English were made of numerous passages from the works of Confucius, Mencius, and Lao-Tsz. Having surveyed briefly those fertile fields of thought, we passed, by a natural transition, into the delectable Buddhist realm. Some passages from the Chinese Sutras, comprising texts and annotations, were consecutively examined, and variously considered. Eventually it was suggested that The Diamond Sutra, perhaps one of the most metaphysical of the works ascribed to Buddha, be conveniently rendered into the English language. In order that the rather unfamiliar text might assume due intelligibility, parallel passages and numerous annotations were subjoined, as the pleasant work of translating proceeded. The idea of printing and publishing the text seemed to follow as a natural sequence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sutra was translated from Sanskrit into Chinese, and this book was translated from the Chinese version into English. This sutra is a conversation between the Buddha and Priest Subhuti talking about the Boddhisattva Code of Conduct to reach the highest knowledge of the Buddha's Teaching, and guidance on learning and practicing on the path to attain the Anuttarā Sammā Saṃbodhi and become a buddha. Anuttarā Sammā Saṃbodhi refers to the incomparable supreme enlightenment, the highest knowledge above all other knowledge. As this sutra is very profound, I must explain the basic knowledge of using the eye of wisdom to insight into Sunyata before entering the sutra. Also, I have compiled a brief description of the sutra to provide more understanding. However, the amount you could benefit from reading this book depends on the original cause of each person as the roots of merit of each are not equally deep. Although, there is a lot of hard work on translating this sutra into other languages, I apologise for any mistakes. Thank you

Book excerpt: An excerpt from the beginning of the INTRODUCTION. The Diamond Sutra is one of the most valued and widely read philosophical works in Buddhist literature. It is very popular amongst ardent Buddhists in China, and excepting the Lotus of the Good Law, and the Len Yen-Ching, perhaps no other Sutra ascribed to Buddha is regarded by the Chinese with so great esteem. In Japan, The Diamond Sutra appears to be perused extensively by what Max Muller termed the Shin-Gon sect, founded by Ko-Bo, a disciple of the renowned pilgrim Hiuen-Tsang, about the year 816 A.D. The Diamond Sutra was written originally in Sanskrit, and in process of time translated into the Tibetan, Chinese, Mongol, and Manchu languages. It represents the Mahayana school of Buddhist thought, a school founded by Nagardjuna, which flourished primarily at Tchakuka, and thereafter influenced appreciably a considerable part of the Buddhist Church. In the year 1836, Csomo Korosi published an account of the Tibetan translation, which interesting document may be consulted in Vol. XX. of the Asiatic Researches. The Diamond Sutra is therein designated "The Sutra of Wonderful Effects," a treatise by means of which Sakyamuni Buddha instructs Subhuti, one of his conspicuous disciples, in The Prajna - Paramita of transcendent wisdom. To Kumarajiva, a native of Kashmir, who gained distinction as a monk of the later Chin dynasty (am. 384-417), is conceded the honour of having first translated The Diamond Sutra into the Chinese language. Of subsequent Chinese translations, perhaps the most noteworthy is the text ascribed to the scholarly Hiuen Tsang, and completed about the middle of the seventh century. A rendering into English of Kumarajiva's Chinese translation was accomplished by the Rev. S. Beal, and published in The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1864-65. The text and German translation of the Tibetan version were published in 1873 by M. Schmidt, in The Me'moires de l'Académie St Pétersbourg. The Mongolian translation was presented by the Baron de Constadt to the library of the Institut de France. The Manchu translation is in the possession of M. de Harlez, who, with the aid of the Tibetan, Manchu, and Chinese versions, published a French translation of the Sanscrit text of The Diamond Sutra in the Journal Asiatique, 1892. It has been observed that "at first sight it may seem as if this metaphysical treatise hardly deserved the worldwide reputation which it has attained." Regarding this descriptive "world-wide reputation," devout Buddhists might suggest in extenuation, that throughout many centuries, the "spiritual wisdom" of The Diamond Sutra produced in countless minds a "conscious blessedness of perfect peace." This "spiritual wisdom" also appeared to be a "strong incentive to holiness," and a grateful inspiration to those who had entered "the path which leads to Nirvana." In a few renowned monasteries of Central China, our Buddhist friends frequently affirmed that, by contemplating the "spiritual wisdom" of The Diamond Sutra, the mind would inevitably become "transfused with the mellow light of imperishable truth."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two classic Zen Buddhist texts that present the foundational teachings of the tradition—now collected in one volume for the modern practitioner The Diamond Sutra, composed in India in the fourth century CE, is one of the most treasured works of Buddhist literature and is the oldest existing printed book in the world. It is known as the Diamond Sutra because its teachings are said to be like diamonds that cut away all dualistic thought, releasing one from the attachment to objects and bringing one to the further shore of enlightenment. The format of this important sutra is presented as a conversation between the Buddha and one of his disciples. The Sutra of Hui-neng, also known as the Platform Sutra, contains the autobiography of a pivotal figure in Zen history and some of the most profound passages of Zen literature. Hui-neng (638–713) was the sixth patriarch of Zen in China but is often regarded as the true father of the Zen tradition. He was a poor, illiterate woodcutter who is said to have attained enlightenment upon hearing a recitation of the Diamond Sutra. Together, these two scriptures present the central teaching of the Zen Buddhist tradition and are essential reading for all students of Buddhism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diamond Sutra (Chin-Kang-Ching) Or Prajna-Paramita: Translated From the Chinese With an Introduction and Notes In the preface to The Vagrahhhediha, Max Muller made a critical observation regarding certain peculiarities of 'style' adopted in this treatise by the Buddhist philo Sophers who wished to convince their hearers of the truth of their philosophy. From the Sanscrit text, perhaps it is difficult to realise fully what Asvaghocha 1 described as the persuasiveness of Buddha's eloquence yet we may quite appreciate the academic instinct of Kumarajiva, whose work on The Diamond Sutra bears evidence of a laudable endeavour to produce a classic, which in the Chinese language is almost entirely beyond reproach. From the time I obtained the Wisdom Eye until the present I have never before heard such a Sutra. World Honored One, if someone hears the Sutra with a pure heart of faith then he realizes the real mark. Book Bilingual Modern Chinese English Diamond Sutra

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diamond Sutra" is a profound Buddhist scripture that captures an in-depth dialogue between Buddha and his disciple Subhuti in an ancient Indian garden. The scripture unfolds with the question, "How should a bodhisattva abide, and how should he subdue his mind?" and delves into one of Buddhism's core teachings: emptiness. In essence, emptiness signifies that all phenomena arise from interdependent causes and conditions, devoid of inherent self-nature. This concept inspires us in how we perceive and relate to the world, guiding us to let go of attachments. Buddhism asserts that attachment is the root of suffering, as our misconceptions and strong attachments to things often lead to dissatisfaction and pain. The significance of the "Diamond Sutra" lies in its teachings on understanding and practicing the wisdom of emptiness. By comprehending emptiness, we can perceive the true nature of things, transcend attachments, and attain inner peace and serenity. This holds profound meaning for every ordinary person, as it provides wisdom to navigate life's challenges and difficulties. Through the teachings of the "Diamond Sutra," we can better cope with stress, anxiety, and life's uncertainties, leading to a more fulfilling and tranquil life.
