Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silesia seemed dark, silent, mysterious and far away. In the year 1800 the American Ambassador to the Prussian Court at Berlin set out with his English-born wife to explore this veiled land. He was John Quincy Adams and his father was the sitting President of the United States. Twenty five years later he himself would become the Sixth President of the United States and his wife, Louisa, the only First Lady not born in America. They intended the trip as a recreation to mend their troubled marriage. Instead John Quincy Adams found himself exploring the nature of evil, and Louisa, found herself investigating a murder. Their destination was Europe's oldest spa, and no place, Adams wrote, "was more calculated to preserve or restore health than Landeck." But they were inevitably drawn to the labyrinth of Schloss Angelpunkt, known as the hinge of good and evil, and there the trouble began. The author was sitting in a tub of bubbling mineral water in Europe's oldest spa in the sequestered little town of Ladek Zdroj, a place where Poland meets the Czech Republic. For centuries kings and tsars as well as many others seeking the balm of these famous healing waters had soaked themselves here. Gazing down from a mural was the face of John Quincy Adams, Sixth President of the United States. What had he been doing here? So began the author's inquiry into the lives of John Quincy Adams and his wife Louisa. They had been here a quarter century before he became President, he then 33 years old, she 25, nursing a marriage fractured by psychological depression, four miscarriages, a vanished dowry, and conflicting views of the world. Archibald Patterson is also author of "Between Hitler and Stalin," a biography of Poland's Marshal Edward Smigly-Rydz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Barnet Schecter dramatically shows in The Devil's Own Work, the cataclysm in New York was anything but an isolated incident; rather, it was a microcosm-within the borders of the supposedly loyal northern states-of the larger Civil War between the North and South. The riots erupted over the same polarizing issues--of slavery versus freedom for African Americans and the scope of federal authority over states and individuals--that had torn the nation apart. And the riots' aftermath foreshadowed the compromises that would bedevil Reconstruction and delay the process of integration for the next 100 years. The story of the draft riots come alive in the voices of passionate newspaper rivals Horace Greeley and Manton Marble; black leader Rev. Henry Highland Garnet and renegade Democrat Fernando Wood; Irish soldier Peter Welsh and conservative diarist Maria Daly; and many others. In chronicling this violent demonstration over the balance between centralized power and civil liberties in a time of national emergency, The Devil's Own Work (Walt Whitman's characterization of the riots) sheds new light on the Civil War era and on the history of protest and reform in America.

Book excerpt: Of the lot, this man was still her best bet. He not only looked the most inebriated, but the most disreputable – lean and hungry and totally without principle. Once he was sober, he would no doubt be easy to buy. “Sister” Kerry Bishop got more than she bargained for when she entered the seedy bar seeking the services of a man, more particularly a mercenary. Linc O’Neal wasn’t the soldier of fortune Kerry mistook him for...but he proved to be just as dangerous and twice as unscrupulous. Linc agrees to help Kerry rescue a group of children from a ruthless dictator, but his motivation is far from noble. If they survive what appears to be a suicide mission, he plans to take Kerry’s promised fifty thousand dollars—in addition to her body—which she provocatively advertised in order to trick him, then withheld. With innocent lives at stake, malevolence and distrust all around, and forbidden desire simmering between them, the steamy atmosphere surrounding Kerry and Linc has little to do with the jungle they must penetrate. Struggling against all odds to stay alive, they discover that their real challenge is to fight the devil within.

Book The Devil s Own Dear Son

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Devil's Own Dear Son" is Cabell's final philsophical comedy, about a man who discovers that his father was a demon and goes to Hell for a disquieting family reunion. James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) wrote many of the Twentieth Century's finest fantasies, including the controversial Jurgen, which was famously banned by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. It was only after the furor died down that readers and critics were fully able to appreciate that the author was no mere sensationalist, but a literary artist of very high calibre. Cabell was above all else, an elegant stylist, whose gently caustic, beautifully fantasic comedies struck a chord in the Jazz Age and still resonate today. He was an important influence on subsequent writers as diverse as Fritz Leiber and Neil Gaiman. "[He] is a delightful author . . . I like the sheer audacity and the scope [of his work]."" -- Neil Gaiman "One of the all-time greats of fantasy, whose cynical yet romantic view of the human comedy is simultaneously hilarious, beautiful, and melancholy. A writer you must read."" -- Darrell Schweitzer

Book excerpt: A journey into science and spirituality to help us reconnect with soil, soul, and society from “one of the world’s leading environmental campaigners” (BBC TV). Climate change is the greatest challenge to humankind today. While the coronavirus sheds a light on the vulnerability of our interconnected world, the effects of global warming will be permanent, indeed catastrophic, without a massive shift in human behavior. Writer, scholar and broadcaster Alastair McIntosh sums up the present knowledge and shows that conventional solutions are not enough. In rejecting the blind alleys of climate change denial, exaggeration and false optimism, he offers a scintillating discussion of ways forward. Weaving together science, politics, psychology and spirituality, this guide examines what it takes to make us riders on the storm. “A climate primer for our times.” —Michael E. Mann, author of The New Climate War “A profusion of ideas, insight, honesty and wit.” —The Herald “Imbued with the deepest hope for a better world.” —Sir Jonathon Porritt, author of Hope in Hell “Solid on the science yet dedicated to the human spirit.” —Professor Katharine Hayhoe, Chief Scientist, The Nature Conservancy

Or, when all else fails, conquer her.
