Book excerpt: "Compulsively readable."—New York Times Book Review From Stuart Turton, author of The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, comes an extraordinary new locked-room murder mystery. A murder on the high seas. A remarkable detective duo. A demon who may or may not exist. It's 1634, and Samuel Pipps, the world's greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. Traveling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend innocent. Among the other guests is Sara Wessel, a noblewoman with a secret. But no sooner is their ship out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. A strange symbol appears on the sail. A dead leper stalks the decks. Livestock dies in the night. And then the passengers hear a terrible voice, whispering to them in the darkness, promising three unholy miracles, followed by a slaughter. First an impossible pursuit. Second an impossible theft. And third an impossible murder. Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes? With Pipps imprisoned, only Arent and Sara can solve a mystery that stretches back into their past and now threatens to sink the ship, killing everybody on board. Shirley Jackson meets Sherlock Holmes in this chilling thriller of supernatural horror, occult suspicion, and paranormal mystery on the high seas.

Through a study of Ford Motor Company between 1914 and 1952, he examines the political and ideological struggles through which industrial labor was incorporated into the coalition of statesmen and capitalists that constructed the postwar world order.

It is done by focusing on the visual and narrative riddles of the jesters and other characters analysed with the help of a background on the festive tradition (Carnival) in Europe, and of published and unpublished (personal letters of the Medici) material. Gradually the pranks and jests reveal earnest and controversial contents which reflect on political relationships between Rome (the Medici pope, Leo X), Florence (the member of the Medici family ruling there) and the Republic of Venice (provider of fleets and reformist thought). Rumours, humours and emulations between Florence Rome and Venice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety-five years ago the enormous interplanetary space vehicle, the Pacifica, with a numerous crew, suddenly and inexplicably disappeared as it neared the planet Pluto. None of the probes directed towards the planet after the disaster found any evidence that the vessel and its crew had ever existed. Now, a century later, the wreck of the huge ship has been sighted, lying shrouded in the hazy-black starlight on the Plutonian surface. A shuttle has been fitted for the dangerous journey to the seventh planet, and with three crewmembers aboard, has made the first attempt to reach Pluto since the loss of the Pacifica. As the shuttle approaches the planet, it also 'suddenly and inexplicably' disappears and is lost. Although the crew of three is believed to have perished, they have not, and will carry on with their mission: to determine how the Pacifica met its fate. The truth, however, may be found only beyond reason, or even beyond imagination, and the three astronauts may wish that they never sought answer to this great mystery.
Download or read book Donovan s Devils written by Albert Lulushi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stirring, little-known story of the forerunners to today's Special Forces. The OSS—Office of Strategic Services—created under the command of William Donovan, has been celebrated for its cloak-and-dagger operations during World War II and as the precursor of the CIA. As the "Oh So Social," it has also been portrayed as a club for the well-connected before, during, and after the war. Donovan's Devils tells the story of a different OSS, that of ordinary soldiers, recruited from among first- and second-generation immigrants, who volunteered for dangerous duty behind enemy lines and risked their lives in Italy, France, the Balkans, and elsewhere in Europe. Organized into Operational Groups, they infiltrated into enemy territory by air or sea and operated for days, weeks, or months hundreds of miles from the closest Allied troops. They performed sabotage, organized native resistance, and rescued downed airmen, nurses, and prisoners of war. Their enemy showed them no mercy, and sometimes their closest friends betrayed them. They were the precursors to today's Special Forces operators. Based on declassified OSS records, personal collections, and oral histories of participants from both sides of the conflict, Donovan's Devils provides the most comprehensive account to date of the Operational Group activities, including a detailed narrative of the ill-fated Ginny mission, which resulted in the one of the OSS's gravest losses of the war. Download or read book Sea Devils written by John Swinfield and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea Devils is a compelling account of pioneer submariners and their astonishing underwater contraptions. Some made perilous voyages. Others sank like stones. Craft were propelled by muscle-power or had steam engines with chimneys. Some had wheels to trundle along the seabed. Others were used as underwater aircraft carriers. Here John Swinfield traces the history of early submarines and the personalities who built and sailed them. From a plethora of madcap inventors emerged a bizarre machine that navies of the world reluctantly acquired but viewed with distaste. It matured into a weapon that would usurp the mighty battleship, which had for centuries enjoyed an unchallenged command of the oceans. In its long and perilous history the submarine became subject to fierce business, military and political shenanigans. It won eventual acceptance amidst the chaos and carnage of the First World War, in which pathfinder submariners achieved an extraordinarily high tally of five Victoria Crosses, Britain’s highest military decoration.Sea Devils brims with daring characters and their unflinching determination to make hazardous underwater voyages: an immensely readable, entertaining and authoritative chronicle of low cunning, high politics, wondrous heroism and appalling tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of World War II, Prince Junio Valerio Borghese, dashing Italian nobleman, assembled the famous Decima MAS naval unit-the first modern naval commando squad. Borghese's "frogmen" were trained to fight undercover and underwater with small submarines and assault boats armed with a variety of destructive torpedoes. The covert tactics he and the Decima MAS developed, including the use of midget submarines, secret nighttime operations, and small teams armed with explosives, have become a standard for special forces around the world to this very day. After the Italian capitulation in 1943, Borghese determinedly fought on as a Fascist commando leader. After the war, he became a man of mystery, variously said to be involved with several right-wing conspiracies, abortive coups, and clandestine activity. The Prince's death in 1974 was every bit as mysterious as his life.Greene and Massignani have drawn upon official archives as well as information from Allied and Axis veterans in an unprecedented attempt to separate fact from fantasy in this detailed examination of Borghese, the Decima MAS, and the Italian naval special forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the First World War is almost always told through the eyes of men in the trenches. But there was another war, just as cruel – the war at sea. And among the men who fought it few were more heroic than the officers and crews of the navy’s secret fleet of Mystery Ships. A Combat of Devils is a gripping tale of reckless courage, based on the real-life exploits of seamen who fought back against the marauding U-boats.Early summer 1915. Britain’s sea routes are a killing zone for the Kaiser’s submarines. The Royal Navy’s Special Service deploys a new weapon; cargo vessels carrying hidden guns, crewed by volunteers who offer themselves as bait to lure the enemy into a trap. After an heroic action, Julian La Salle is given command of Freya, a trading schooner converted to a Mystery Ship and sent to hunt down a submarine prowling the sea lanes off Ushant. With him is a young American, Merrick Granger a survivor from the Lusitania who volunteers for the war to escape a painful past. La Salle and Granger become particular friends, bonding closer after their ship is torpedoed off the French coast and they, with two other survivors, take refuge at the home of di Fario, a boatyard owner and veteran of the Franco-Prussian war. Di Fario lives with his daughter, Laurentine, to whom Granger and La Salle – in different ways – are attracted. When the wreck of Freya is found on a reef, La Salle hits on an audacious idea to strike at the U-boat. It is a desperate and possibly suicidal plan but di Fario, haunted by a tragic secret, is determined to be part of it and so too, is his daughter. Driven by love, Laurentine is plunged into the horror of war in a way none of them could have foreseen.
Download or read book The Games with Devils Are Over written by Lucien Nzeyimana and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about love, hate, disappointment and betrayal. "Eros" is represented by Jack's love towards Nikita. His attraction to Nikita embodies the force of love. The counterpart was hate, as Nikita's feelings were all directed to the opposite side, killers of her father, brother and ex boyfriends. Philia and agape helped Jack get along with his destroyers and rivals. Jack is also fond of people who do the right thing. His case is an example of true forgiveness. He saw Dick, Geram, and Juvenhack as human beings worthy of respect. He forgave and loved the very people whose desire was not only to destroy his family but also to annihilate a group of people. Though Jack never liked their actions since childhood, he still treated them with kindness, love and respect. Jack's life was marked by a conflict between folly and resignation. Folly is portrayed by evils of oppression and dictatorship of Evildoers who ruled the postcolonial Burundi. The main character of Dickson Rushatsihori is presented as the symbol of evil, the prototype of Evildoers. He is a rigid and corrupted individual who would never wish peace to his fellow citizens. Rather than seeing Burundians living in harmony with one another, this proponent of the status quo would only wish evil, chaos and anarchy to his country. The theme of folly is also depicted in Jack's relationship with Nikita Chissocco. It is illustrated by Nikita's betrayal of his love for her. Nikita expresses her folly through abusive language, domestic violence, infidelities and her collaboration with Evildoers such as Dick, Juvenhack Zim and Geram to destroy her husband's dignity. Jack was forced to a war for the liberation of his mind emprisoned in his own house. He hoped that folly and resignation would eventually coil up. He would not accept that his destiny was to suffer all his life. Folly and resignation finally collided, forcing Jack to defend his honor and dignity. By breaking up with Dick and Nikita's folly, he liberated himself from a heavy burden. He pulled himself together to reconstruct his life with more strength and courage. This captivating story is an account of one's life, yet it will touch those of so many. Not only does it bring into the fore the injustices of this world, it also shows that no matter what life throws at us, we all seek love and closeness with another human being.
