Book Transnational Networks and Local Development

Download or read book Transnational Networks and Local Development written by Kimberley Porter and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diasporas have become an important dimension of sub-Saharan Africa&#x;s development strategy. Now recognised as the continent&#x;s sixth developmental region Africa&#x;s growing diaspora population is being embraced within a series of development initiatives across the continent, shaping development processes in their home and often their host country. Diaspora-development initiatives have taken a wide range of formal and informal manifestations across the continent but share an underlying logic: diasporas have the resources, skills and knowledge which, when harnessed properly, have the potential to meet the development needs of their homeland. Problematically, development scholars have been slow to recognise either the rationality or the significance of diaspora networks. As a result, a discourse of diasporas and development has emerged without significant critical self-reflection and commentary. Critical questions need to be asked about the roles of diasporas as development actors and the form of development to which they are expected to contribute; who benefits most from them; and where, why, and how they operate. To this end, this paper reflects on the nature and significance of diaspora networks in development. Specifically, I focus on the extent to which diaspora networks sustain, and challenge, particular intersections between discourse, power and political institutions and practices in informing development. Drawing on the experiences of Zimbabwean diaspora networks in the United Kingdom this paper outlines the historical, social and political processes that shape the geographies of diaspora networks and the implications for diaspora-led reconstruction and development in the country.

Book Zimbabwe s New Diaspora

Download or read book Zimbabwe s New Diaspora written by JoAnn McGregor and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zimbabwe's crisis since 2000 has produced a dramatic global scattering of people. This volume investigates this enforced dispersal, and the processes shaping the emergence of a new "diaspora" of Zimbabweans abroad, focusing on the most important concentrations in South Africa and in Britain. Not only is this the first book on the diasporic connections created through Zimbabwe's multifaceted crisis, but it also offers an innovative combination of research on the political, economic, cultural and legal dimensions of movement across borders and survival thereafter with a discussion of shifting identities and cultural change. It highlights the ways in which new movements are connected to older flows, and how displacements across physical borders are intimately linked to the reworking of conceptual borders in both sending and receiving states. The book is essential reading for researchers/students in migration, diaspora and postcolonial literary studies.

Book Diasporas Development and Governance

Download or read book Diasporas Development and Governance written by Abel Chikanda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on examples from the global North and South, this book examines the relationship between migration, development and diaspora engagement from a governance perspective. It explores the ways that governments interact with their own extra-national diasporic populations in order to boost economic development, build global trading and investment networks, and increase their political leverage overseas. Inside, readers will find fifteen essays which highlight such issues as diaspora engagement by governments at different scales, the divisions that often exist within diaspora groups, diaspora transnationalism and return migration, diaspora knowledge networks and higher education capacity building, and the neglected issues of South-South migration and diasporas as well as North-South migration and diasporas. The book presents empirical case studies from various geographical contexts including Australia, Canada, the Philippines, India, the Caribbean, Zimbabwe, and the United States. Overall, this book presents fresh insights into how and why migrant-sending countries are increasingly turning to the diaspora option to attempt to benefit from the transfer of knowledge, skills and financial and social capital. It provides policy makers, researchers, and students with new perspectives on governance and the means by which states are attempting to utilize their diaspora resources.

Book Realizing the Development Potential of Diasporas

Download or read book Realizing the Development Potential of Diasporas written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, international experts including academics, policymakers, private sector practitioners, and representatives of diaspora communities further our understanding of how the growing population of expatriates from the developing world can be effectively leveraged to promote development in their homelands. The contributors cover issues relating to diaspora diversity and its impact on development, the potential of expatriates to further entrepreneurship and business development in their homelands, the effectiveness of remittances in furthering inclusive development, and policies to better engage diasporas as drivers of development. Their analyses are supported by examples and case studies focusing on the experiences of specific diaspora networks, home country institutions promoting diaspora engagement, migrant entrepreneurs, and financial institutions facilitating remittances. The contributing experts and practitioners come from a range of public and private organizations and institutions including Microfinance International Corporation, Western Union, Citibank, the Indus Entrepreneurs, Highland Tea Company, Chile Global, World Bank, United Nations, Inter-American Dialogue, African Foundation for Development, and The George Washington University. Realizing the Development Potential of Diasporas draws from papers originally presented during a Rockefeller Foundation meeting in 2008 and subsequently updated, as well as from discussions and research from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the United Nations Development Program and from meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.

Book Diaspora Development and Democracy

Download or read book Diaspora Development and Democracy written by Devesh Kapur and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to a country when its skilled workers emigrate? The first book to examine the complex economic, social, and political effects of emigration on India, Diaspora, Development, and Democracy provides a conceptual framework for understanding the repercussions of international migration on migrants' home countries. Devesh Kapur finds that migration has influenced India far beyond a simplistic "brain drain"--migration's impact greatly depends on who leaves and why. The book offers new methods and empirical evidence for measuring these traits and shows how data about these characteristics link to specific outcomes. For instance, the positive selection of Indian migrants through education has strengthened India's democracy by creating a political space for previously excluded social groups. Because older Indian elites have an exit option, they are less likely to resist the loss of political power at home. Education and training abroad has played an important role in facilitating the flow of expertise to India, integrating the country into the world economy, positively shaping how India is perceived, and changing traditional conceptions of citizenship. The book highlights a paradox--while international migration is a cause and consequence of globalization, its effects on countries of origin depend largely on factors internal to those countries. A rich portrait of the Indian migrant community, Diaspora, Development, and Democracy explores the complex political and economic consequences of migration for the countries migrants leave behind.

Book Diaspora Networks and the International Migration of Skills

Download or read book Diaspora Networks and the International Migration of Skills written by Yevgeny Kuznetsov and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Network diasporas are but the latest bridge connecting developing economy insiders, with their risk-mitigating knowledge and connections, to outsiders in command of technical know-how and investment capital. This book examines the interaction of expatriate talent with institutions in expatriates' countries of origin in an attempt to make the potential of diasporas and their knowledge a reality. The question of how to trigger and sustain such a virtuous cycle is a central concern of this book. The focus is on the "how to" details of how to design effective diaspora networks and transform brain drain into brain gain.

Book Transnational Diaspora Politics Cross Border Political Activities of Zimbabweans in the United Kingdom

Download or read book Transnational Diaspora Politics Cross Border Political Activities of Zimbabweans in the United Kingdom written by Jenny Kuhlmann and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely in response to the unstable economic situation and a political climate characterised by a limited space for divergent opinions, democratic participation and political pluralism, an estimated one third of the Zimbabwean population has left the country since the early 2000s, mainly to neighbouring and Western countries. As the great majority of those outside their home country are of voting age, the growth of the diaspora is tantamount to an increase in the size of Zimbabwe's political community abroad. Denied external voting rights - and thus to participate in the most basic political decision-making process of their country - Zimbabweans abroad have searched for other, non-electoral ways of participation in the political life of their home country. The book investigates how and to what extent politically active Zimbabweans in Britain who voted with their feet or were forced out of the country by economic and/or political circumstances use the diasporic space to influence political processes in their home country from afar, and thus how they try to remain an active and recognised part of the domestic political community and development of their country of origin, even while outside the territorial borders of the Zimbabwean state.
