Book excerpt: Regional Silviculture of the United States, 2nd Edition John W. Barrett This is the only regional silviculture text now on the market. It assesses the significant biological, physical, and economic qualities of forest regions in the continental U.S., and their effect on silviculture practices. The first chapter provides an overview of the forests of the U.S. and introduces the topic of social and institutional constraints on silviculture. Subsequent chapters each deal with a specific forest region, are written by a person intimately acquainted with the locality, and follow a regular outline to provide cohesion and facilitate regional comparisons. 1980 551 pp. Forest Ecology, 3rd Edition Stephen H. Spurr and Burton V. Barnes The growing interest and literature in this field created a need for a fresh updating of this classic text. It remains a comprehensive yet highly readable account of real world forests, including ecological aspects of successful forest management. Broad coverage embraces genetics and variation, environmental factors, site, community relations, ecosystem studies, glacial forest history, post-settlement history, compostition and succession. 1980 687 pp. Wildlife Biology, 2nd Edition Raymond F. Dasmann This updated and revised edition of the standard introductory text brings together the principles of ecology and population biology and the practice of wildlife conservation and management. It presents basic information on the value and present status of wild animal life, including a history of human relationships with and attitudes toward wildlife. Examines wildlife within the context of ecosystems, indicating why single-species approaches to conservation and management often fail. 1981 212 pp.

Book Wired Wilderness

Download or read book Wired Wilderness written by Etienne Benson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American wildlife biologists first began fitting animals with radio transmitters in the 1950s. By the 1980s the practice had proven so useful to scientists and nonscientists alike that it became global. Wired Wilderness is the first book-length study of the origin, evolution, use, and impact of these now-commonplace tracking technologies. Combining approaches from environmental history, the history of science and technology, animal studies, and the cultural and political history of the United States, Etienne Benson traces the radio tracking of wild animals across a wide range of institutions, regions, and species and in a variety of contexts. He explains how hunters, animal-rights activists, and other conservation-minded groups gradually turned tagging from a tool for control into a conduit for connection with wildlife. Drawing on extensive archival research, interviews with wildlife biologists and engineers, and in-depth case studies of specific conservation issues—such as the management of deer, grouse, and other game animals in the upper Midwest and the conservation of tigers and rhinoceroses in Nepal—Benson illuminates telemetry's context-dependent uses and meanings as well as commonalities among tagging practices. Wired Wilderness traces the evolution of the modern wildlife biologist’s field practices and shows how the intense interest of nonscientists at once constrained and benefited the field. Scholars of and researchers involved in wildlife management will find this history both fascinating and revealing.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
