Book The Development of High Intensity Negative Ion Sources and Beams in the USSR

Download or read book The Development of High Intensity Negative Ion Sources and Beams in the USSR written by Rand Corporation and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews Soviet R and D of (1) high-intensity negative ion sources and (2) transport and focusing of negative ion beams, using Soviet open literature of the past ten years, and correlates this data with data on Soviet institutes responsible for negative ion beam development. The Soviets are developing intense negative ion beams as the basis for creating neutral beams for injection into mirror traps and tokamaks, for inertial confinement fusion, and possibly for exoatmospheric beam weapon applications. The report focuses specifically on surface-plasma-type ion sources, which were first developed in the USSR and which show great promise for creating beams of high intensity, high brightness, and low emittance. Mechanisms for optimum negative ion beam transport are also discussed.

Book Production of Neutral Beams from Negative Ion Beam Systems in the USSR

Download or read book Production of Neutral Beams from Negative Ion Beam Systems in the USSR written by Nikita Wells and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, a sequel to (The Development of High-Intensity Negative Ion Sources and Beams in the USSR), R-2816-ARPA, examines (1) Soviet research on the formation of intense, high-energy neutral particle beams and the associated investigation of charge exchange and beam stripping and (2) the deployment in the USSR of high-intensity negative ion sources of the direct-extraction and double-charge-exchange types, beam neutralizers, and neutral beam injectors, as reported in Soviet open-source technical publications. Based on open-source literature, the study finds no overt exoatmospheric particle-beam weapons in the USSR. The author suggest, however, that such a program may exist as a classified effort paralleling the nuclear fusion research described in the literature. Originator supplied keywords include: Thermonuclear reactions; Plasma temperatures; and Charged particles.

Book Development and Applications of Negative Ion Sources

Download or read book Development and Applications of Negative Ion Sources written by Vadim Dudnikov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the development of sources of negative ions and their application in science and industry. It describes the physical foundations and implementation of the key methods of negative ion production and control, such as charge exchange, thermionic emission, plasma volume, secondary emission (sputtering) and surface-plasma sources, as well as the history of their development. Following on from this essential foundational material, the book goes on to explore transport of negative ion beams, and beam-plasma instabilities. Now in its second edition, the book has been substantially expanded and updated to address the many developments since it was first published, most importantly the development and investigation of cesiated surfaces with work function ~1.2-1.3 eV in conditions close to discharges in surface plasma sources. The book also includes a new chapter on development of conversion targets for high-energy neutral beam injectors, covering gas targets, plasma targets and photon targets for efficient conversion of high energy negative ion beams to neutral beams. With exposition accessible at the graduate level, and a comprehensive bibliography, this book will appeal to all students and researchers whose work concerns ion sources and their applications to accelerators, beam physics, storage rings, cyclotrons, and plasma traps.

Book Recent Advancements in High Intensity Heavy Negative Ion Sources Based on the Sputter Principle

Download or read book Recent Advancements in High Intensity Heavy Negative Ion Sources Based on the Sputter Principle written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant advancements have been recently made in the technology of forming high intensity heavy negative ion beams. Due to their ease of operation, simplicity, long lifetime, and wide range of species capabilities, negative ion sources predicated on the sputter principle are being used for an increasing number of diverse applications, including standard tandem accelerator-based research, high-energy ion implantation, tandem accelerator mass spectrometry, and low-energy atomic physics research. Sources have been developed which utilize either direct surface ionization, or a plasma to form the positive ion beam used to effect sputtering of samples containing the material of interest. This article will include a brief review of the fundamental processes underlying negative ion formation in these sources. Emphasis will be placed on the descriptions and performance characteristics of specific sources based on each of the positive ion formation techniques. 21 refs., 16 figs., 1 tab.

Book The Emittances and Brightnesses of High intensity Negative Ion Sources

Download or read book The Emittances and Brightnesses of High intensity Negative Ion Sources written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emittances of high-intensity ion beams extracted from cesium sputter negative ion sources equipped with cylindrical and ellipsoidal solid tungsten and spiral-wound tantalum (General Ionex Corporation, Model 860), and cesium surface ionizers have been measured for several ion species, including 12C−, 28Si−, 58Ni−, and 197Au−. While certain sets of data from the ellipsoidal and cylindrical geometry ionizer sources suggest a moderate growth in emittance with increasing negative ion beam intensity I over the range of intensities investigated (5 less than or equal to 1 less than or equal to 60 .mu. A) of perhaps 20%, not all data exhibit this dependence, especially those from the Model 860 source. As well, no evidence of an emittance dependence on ion mass of a monotonic nature was found. The emittances of ion beams at the 80% intensity level from the Model 860 source are found to be higher on the average by factors of 1.8 and 1.7, respectively, than those from sources equipped with ellipsoidal and cylindrical geometry cesium surface ionizers.

Book Emittance Studies of High Intensity Negative Ion Sources Equipped with Continuous Surface Cylindrical and Spherical Geometry Tungsten Ionizers

Download or read book Emittance Studies of High Intensity Negative Ion Sources Equipped with Continuous Surface Cylindrical and Spherical Geometry Tungsten Ionizers written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A digitally controlled emittance measurement, data acquisition and processing system has been designed, implemented and used to determine emittances of negative ion beams extracted from high-intensity negative-ion sources equipped with cylindrical and spherical geometry cesium surface ionizers. Comparative studies indicate that the emittances of ion beams extracted from the source equipped with a spherical geometry ionizer are lower by 13% to 21% than those extracted from the source equipped with a cylindrical geometry ionizer. This difference may be attributable to geometric factors rather than differences in the sizes of the emission areas at the points of negative-ion generation. Studies reveal that the emittances of these sources are independent of ion mass for most of the materials investigated and independent of ion current over the range of ion currents used in these investigations (4.mu. A to 12 .mu. A).

Book Time Dependent Density Functional Theory

Download or read book Time Dependent Density Functional Theory written by Carsten Ullrich and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is a quantum mechanical approach for the dynamical properties of electrons in matter. It's widely used in (bio)chemistry and physics to calculate molecular excitation energies and optical properties of materials. This is the first graduate-level text on the formal framework and applications of TDDFT.
