Book Simulation Of Beef Cattle Production Systems And Its Use In Economic Analysis

Download or read book Simulation Of Beef Cattle Production Systems And Its Use In Economic Analysis written by Thomas H Spreen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis of beef cattle production has been limited by the inability to fully describe the underlying production process. Except for confined feeding of cattle, beef cattle production is the process of growing cattle who consume forages. The animal and the forage possess attributes of both factors and products of production. The production of forage constitutes one production process, animal growth is another production process, and reproduction by female animals is a third production process. Cattle production involves all three processes in such a manner that each influences the outcome of the other. Each process is itself complex and analysis is further complicated when all three are considered simultaneously.

Book Beef Cattle Management Systems for the Southeast

Download or read book Beef Cattle Management Systems for the Southeast written by Hines Finlayson Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two mathematical models for the evaluation of beef production systems were developed and computerized using DYNAMO programming. The first model, a cow efficiency estimator, computed the TDN requirements for a cow and her calf using variables such as animal weight and gains, seasonal changes in cow weight, cow milk production, physical activity of the animal and the quality of feed being consumed. The second model, a herd efficiency estimator, used data from the first model plus data on cattle prices, fixed cots, pregnancy and calf survival rate, death losses, heifer replacement and cullingpolicies, herd size, and TDN produced per acre from each TDN source. This model calculated biological efficiency factors such as TDN per unit of beef sold, beef produced per land unit ane economic efficiency factors including cost and net returns per unit of beef sold and net returns per land unit. The models were tested using data collected over a nine year period at the University of Florida Beef Research Unit. They were then used to evaluate five feeding and pasture systems suitable to the southeastern United States. Animal production traits, market structures and herd culling procedures were also studied. Cow size had no effect on measures of biological efficiency. In general, cow size had little or no effect on profitability except that large cows were at a disadvantage when a relatively expensive high-energy corn silage ration was fed to brood cows. Increasing milk yield improved biological efficiency, descreased cots, and ...

Book The Economics Of Livestock Systems In Developing Countries

Download or read book The Economics Of Livestock Systems In Developing Countries written by James R Simpson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvement of the world's livestock industry necessitates input from many directions. Planning by a host of national and international agencies is required in order to provide optimal stimulus in very diverse areas ranging from formulation of laws and incentives that stimulate competition yet prevent undue competition, to the optimal provision of credit. Planning is needed to carry out a complex array of interrelated research. The purpose of this book is specifically tasked with setting forth frameworks and methods for evaluation of investments and associated economic decision-making in the livestock industries of developing countries. Economists will find this book useful because it synthesizes .much material into a cohesive whole--material that is often presented in a cursory manner or overlooked as emphasis has shifted to sophisticated quantitative techniques.

Book Computer Simulation of Beef Cattle Production Systems in the Llanos of Columbia

Download or read book Computer Simulation of Beef Cattle Production Systems in the Llanos of Columbia written by Joel Martin Levine and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simulation model capable of execution on a programmable calculator was developed to study voluntary intake, liveweight change, and fertility of grade Zebu cows in the Llanos of Colombia. Organic nitrogen in the diet and meta bolic weight were used to predict intake; age, liveweight, and energy concentration were the driving variables for the maintenance prediction equation. Energy concentration was calculated as a function of crude protein and digestible organic matter, and liveweight change was predicted as a function of intake, maintenance, liveweight, and energy concentration. Multiplicative correction factors were fitted from data obtained from cow-calf experiments to adjust intake and maintenance for the effects of burning the native savanna, compensatory gain, mineral deficiency, and lactation and gestation. The correction factors were .89 for intake after burning the native savanna, 1.05 and .95 for intake and maintenance during compensatory gain, and .90 for reduced intake due to mineral deficiency. Correction factors for physiological status were 1.20 for intake during early and late lactation, and 1.40, 1.32, and 1.05 for maintenance during early lactation, late lactation, and late gestation, respectively. The correction factors for burning and compensatory gain were fitted against data from dry cows of Herds 4-5 of the Herd Systems Experiment (HSE) and yielded a Pearsonian correlation coefficient of .95 (p

Book The Application of Systems Thinking in Cattle Production

Download or read book The Application of Systems Thinking in Cattle Production written by Douglas Shane and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying systems methods to cattle production requires investigators to think about whole systems when addressing study objectives. The research conducted for this dissertation emphasized studying whole systems using different methods. We studied cattle production systems through mathematical simulation and new indirect monitoring technologies. While the methods used for the research in this dissertation may be very different, all utilized systems methods to address the study objectives. Firstly, we applied systems thinking methods and developed a dynamic, deterministic systems simulation of cow-calf production over a 10-year horizon. This model was used to investigate the effects the duration of postpartum anestrus (dPPA) has on reproductive performance. A large range of dPPA have been reported, so various primiparous cow and multiparous cow dPPA were simulated. We found that increasing the dPPA for primiparous and multiparous cows had a negative impact on herd performance and that the dPPA is an important factor in determining cow-calf performance success. We then used the cow-calf simulation to explore the effects of breeding nulliparous cows prior to the rest of the herd, known as providing Heifer Lead Time (tHL). We found that increasing tHL improved herd performance, especially with longer dPPA for primiparous cows. Secondly, real-time location systems (RTLS) were used to indirectly monitor cattle behavior. These systems have been used to determine the amount of time cattle spend at eating and drinking locations. We modeled the probability of cattle participating in eating and drinking behavior when determined to be at these locations by RTLS and found that significant differences exist between individual calves and period of the day. Finally, we explored associations between bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and animal-to-animal contacts as determined by RTLS in beef cattle. We found that the probability of BRD diagnosis was associated with the amount of time 4 days' ago that a calf was in calf-contact with calves assumed to be shedding BRD pathogens.
