Book The Development of a Low Temperature Vapor Filled Thermionic Converter

Download or read book The Development of a Low Temperature Vapor Filled Thermionic Converter written by F. G. Block and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of a low-temperature, plasma, thermionic converter is described. The converter uses a third electrode to ionize plasma so as to neutralize the space charge. The lower temperature thus achieved should significantly prolong the life of the converter and contribute to the development of a more reliable power supply for space application. Research was directed toward optimizing geometry and operating characteristics and investigating the effects of temperature and pressure, starting pulse, magnetic fields, and operation in both series and parallel circuitry. Materials were investigated to achieve practical electrodes by determining compatibility of material, atmospheric corrosion, and gas permeation. Converters were fabricated, evaluated, and life tested with the parameters optimized by the test program.

Book The Development of a Thermionic Converter Module Suitable for Liquid Metal Heating

Download or read book The Development of a Thermionic Converter Module Suitable for Liquid Metal Heating written by G. Y. Eastman and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effort was continued to improve performance and increase the reliability of thermionic energy converters for space applications. The particular objectives include optimization of geometry and ceramic insulation between emitters and heat source. This work will include the development of a thermionic generator module to develop 3.0 volts of potential from a liquid metal heat source. The overall concept of the 3-volt generator has been established. Before final design and fabrication of the generator, the more difficult problems are being solved by fabricating and testing prototype 3-converter modules. During this period, four 3-converter modules were assembled. A number of subassemblies were successfully tested and techniques for assembling a series of converters within a single envelope were perfected. A method of bonding the center heat source tubing has been tentatively selected and materials for detailed evaluation of the method have been ordered. Life testing of one Type A1198B converter was concluded after 1010 hours. Another converter of this type has since completed 600 hours of a life test with a constant output of 46 watts. (Author).

Book Research on Thermionic Converters Using Barium and Cesium Vapor

Download or read book Research on Thermionic Converters Using Barium and Cesium Vapor written by J. D. Long and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations of thermionic converter operations were conducted utilizing a dual vapor system of barium and cesium. Barium and cesium vapors were introduced into two differently designed converters. The first converter developed an internal short circuit due to the development of a low melting point eutectic of barium and palladium which shorted each of the segments of the collector to the base structure. The second converter (tungsten emitter-tungsten collector) was operated for more than 350 hours through more than 40 thermal cycles to gather double vapor I-V characteristics. The converter was operated first with cesium only, to develop several well defined data points at 1600 and 1700 C. The maximum power output measured was 15 watts/sq. cm at 1700 C and at 2-mil spacing. The addition of barium lowered the emitter work function and raised the collector work function as expected. Voltage output losses were observed to increase with increasing barium temperature. Ion generation was believed to be a function of both cesium and barium pressures. The net results was reduced performance with both barium and cesium, generally caused by a reduction in diode output voltage on the order of 0.5 volt. The barium, as well as cesium, appeared to provide ions for neutralization of the space charge. Neutralization was readily observed with very low cesium reservoir temperature (50 C) to an extent greater than predicted. (Author).

Book HIGH TEMPERATURE VAPOR FILLED THERMIONIC CONVERTER

Download or read book HIGH TEMPERATURE VAPOR FILLED THERMIONIC CONVERTER written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress Development of a high temperature, vaporfilled thermionic converter for application with a nuclear reactor for space-vehicle electrical power generation is reported. Problems associated with the design and opera tion of a thermionic converter employing a UC-ZrC emitter, a cesium plasma for space charge neutralization, and a high-temperature collector are described. Emitter fabrication techniques are also described. A test cell employing a cylindrical UC-ZrC emitter, which was pressure bonded to a tantalum sleeve, and a low- temperature copper collector, was fabricated and operated for 400 hours to provide experimental data. The emitter was operated at temperatures of the order of 2000 deg C while the collector temperature was maintained at 200 to 300 deg C.A conceptual design for a thermionic power reactor incorporating the thermionic converter under development is also studied. It was concluded that a thermionic fuel element would be about 20 inches long and 0.68 inch in diameter and would incorporate 1O thermionic cells. The load voltage per fuel element would be about 14.5 volts and two elements would be connected in parallel (electrically) to provide an output of 29 volts. The over-all design would provide an electrical power level of approximately one megawatt. (auth).

Book High temperature Vapor filled Thermionic Converter

Download or read book High temperature Vapor filled Thermionic Converter written by R. Skoff and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts were directed to the evaluation of ma terials, fabrication, and testing problems as sociated with the operation of high-temperature vapor-filled thermionic converters employing uranium-zirconium carbide emitters of cylindrical geometry. To date five of these converters have operated a total of 5300 hr. The last converter to be tested in this program is Cell K, which will soon be operable. In this reporting period, Cell H, which had two cesium vials, was placed in operation, while final assembly of Cell K was completed. Cell H output was 56 watts at an emitter temperature of 2380 K. The cesium temperature optimum for maximum power was 637 K.A collector temperature optimum was not obtained due to cooling limitations. (Author).
