Book The Determination of Neighborhood Quality

Download or read book The Determination of Neighborhood Quality written by Robert W. Marans and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent empirical research has demonstrated that neighborhood quality is associated with residents' evaluation of specific attributes of their housing environment. This paper uses the 1976 Annual Housing Survey to assess the contributions to overall neighborhood quality of people's evaluations of environmental conditions and public services. It considers 1) the extent to which the presence or absence of conditions influences ratings of neighborhoods, 2) the relative importance of conditions and service evaluations in explaining overall neighborhood ratings, and 3) the extent to which the evaluations in households with different background characteristics differ in importance in explaining overall neighborhood ratings.

Book The Economics of Neighborhood

Download or read book The Economics of Neighborhood written by David S. Segal and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Neighborhood integrates neighborhood into contemporary notions of the urban economy. Neighborhood is viewed as a good with demand, supply, and equilibrium aspects. Topics covered range from demand for neighborhood and interneighborhood mobility to neighborhood choice and transportation services. The role of governments as suppliers of neighborhoods is also considered. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to some of the efforts to measure neighborhood effects and the approaches used in analyzing the role of neighborhood in the urban economy. The next section deals with the determinants of neighborhood demand in different eastern and midwestern cities in the United States in the mid- to late 1960s. The location choice of a sample of Pittsburgh households is examined, along with the role that neighborhood transition at the origin played in governing the decision to move or stay put. Subsequent chapters focus on the neighborhood choice of households already living in Washington, D.C., in 1968 as a joint prior choice of residential location, housing type, automobile ownership, and mode of travel to work; how the supply of certain kinds of neighborhoods can be determined by the interaction of residential demand and housing supply in the private sector; and optimum neighborhood supply by local governments. The concluding section analyzes neighborhood in an equilibrium setting, with emphasis on price outcomes and the quantity aspects of neighborhood. This monograph will be of value to economists as well as to researchers and students interested in urban economics.

Book Dynamics of Neighborhood Quality in Chicago

Download or read book Dynamics of Neighborhood Quality in Chicago written by Sonya Williams and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The quantitative examination of neighborhood quality of life has traditionally focused on individual indicators and their level of occurrence, such as number of crimes and how much they rise or fall over time. While this approach can help to identify a neighborhood's problems, it does not contribute to an understanding of the way indicators of quality interact with each other and change over time. This paper explores the use of analytic methods that are better suited for assessing neighborhood change, focusing on the rate at which changes occur - referred to as "trajectories" in this paper - as opposed to changes in magnitude. It seeks both to identify general correlations between indicators and to explore how these relationships are affected by neighborhood contexts and by conditions that originate outside the neighborhood, such as the collapse of the housing market in 2006 and the national recession that followed. The paper draws on data from an evaluation of the New Communities Program (NCP), an ambitious, 10-year effort to improve conditions in distressed urban neighborhoods of Chicago. Using a longitudinal database, the paper explores analyses of the interactions among quality-of-life indicators in the neighborhoods where NCP is working and in other Chicago neighborhoods. It looks at these interactions over time in three domains of interest to the initiative - safety, housing, and the economic environment - focusing in particular on business cycle fluctuations, the economic downturn, and the association between home foreclosures and crime."--Page v.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
