The sample is dissolved in hydrofluoric, nitric, and perchloric acids, and the residue is fused with sodium peroxide. Potassium nitrate is added as a de-ionizing agent, and the atomic absorption of the elements in solution is measured by use if a lean nitrous-oxide-acetylene flame. There is no interference from the elements that are likely to occur in ores and silicate materials, and the coefficient of variation of the method is less than 2 per cent.
