Book The Design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Groupware Systems

Download or read book The Design of Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Groupware Systems written by Dan Shapiro and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrases the information superhighway and the the information societyare on almost everyone's lips. CSCW and groupware systems are the key to bringing those phrases to life. To an extent that would scarcely have been imaginable a few years ago, the contributions in this volume speak to each other and to a broader interdisciplinary context. The areas of ethnography and design, the requirements and principles of CSCW design, CSCW languages and environments, and the evaluation of CSCW systems are brought together, to bring to light how activities in working domains are really in practice, carried out. The aim above all is to do justice to the creativity and versatility of those whose work they aim to support.

Book Cooperative Work and Coordinative Practices

Download or read book Cooperative Work and Coordinative Practices written by Kjeld Schmidt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information technology has been used in organisational settings and for organisational purposes such as accounting, for a half century, but IT is now increasingly being used for the purposes of mediating and regulating complex activities in which multiple professional users are involved, such as in factories, hospitals, architectural offices, and so on. The economic importance of such coordination systems is enormous but their design often inadequate. The problem is that our understanding of the coordinative practices for which these systems are developed is deficient, leaving systems developers and software engineers to base their designs on commonsensical requirements analyses. The research reflected in this book addresses these very problems. It is a collection of articles which establish a conceptual foundation for the research area of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work.

Book Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design IV

Download or read book Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design IV written by Weiming Shen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design of complex artifacts and systems requires the cooperation of multidisciplinary design teams using multiple sophisticated commercial and non-commercial engine- ing tools such as CAD tools, modeling, simulation and optimization software, en- neering databases, and knowledge-based systems. Individuals or individual groups of multidisciplinary design teams usually work in parallel and independently with various engineering tools, which are located on different sites, often for quite a long period of time. At any moment, individual members may be working on different versions of a design or viewing the design from various perspectives, at different levels of details. In order to meet these requirements, it is necessary to have efficient comput- supported collaborative design systems. These systems should not only automate in- vidual tasks, in the manner of traditional computer-aided engineering tools, but also enable individual members to share information, collaborate, and coordinate their activities within the context of a design project. Based on close international collaboration between the University of Technology of Compiègne in France and the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Ac- emy of Sciences in the early 1990s, a series of international workshops on CSCW in Design started in 1996. In order to facilitate the organization of these workshops, an International Working Group on CSCW in Design (CSCWD) was established and an International Steering Committee was formed in 1998. The series was converted to int- national conferences in 2000 building on the success of the four previous workshops.

Book Groupware and the World Wide Web

Download or read book Groupware and the World Wide Web written by Richard Bentley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-05-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the World Wide Web has changed the perspectives of groupware systems. The interest and deployment of Internet and intranet groupware solutions is growing rapidly, not just in academic circles but also in the commercial arena. The first generation of Web-based groupware tools has already started to emerge, and leading groupware vendors are urgently adapting their products for compatibility and integration with Web technologies. The focus of Groupware and the World Wide Web is to explore the potential for Web-based groupware. This book includes an analysis of the key characteristics of the Web, presenting reasons for its success, and describes developments of a diverse range of Web-based groupware systems. An emphasis on the technical obstacles and challenges is implemented by more analytical discussions and perspectives, including that of Information Technology managers looking to deploy groupware solutions within their organizations. Written by experts from different backgrounds - academic and commercial, technical and organizational - this book provides a unique overview of and insight into current issues and future possibilities concerning extension of the World Wide Web for group working.

Book Communication and Collaboration Support Systems

Download or read book Communication and Collaboration Support Systems written by Kenichi Okada and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was approximately two decades ago that the support of communication and collaboration became an important research issue. The technical stimulation for this was the spread of personal computers and computer networks, whilst the social driver was the demand for the support of everyday work, frequently including group work and teamwork. This field of research has become known as Computer-Supported Cooperative Work whilst the systems to support group work are called groupware. Over the two decades, research has been extensively conducted. Various Web-based systems have been researched, some of which are aimed at the support of communication and collaboration. Mobile phones have spread rapidly and communication and collaboration support systems have also been researched on this platform. There are many other technologies such as virtual reality, robotics, multimedia, and ubiquitous computing, each of which provides opportunities for the research field. As the research field is not dependent on the type of technology, but is dependent on the needs of human activity and human beings are social animals, the technical demands of supporting social activities do not diminish.Technologies that potentially are useful for this purpose are being investigated whilst new technologies are invented. As a result of the development of IT, the research and development of communication and collaboration systems is increasingly active. The scope of this publication extends from perspectives, design principles, guidelines, and social aspects of communication and collaboration support systems to the various application systems and the platform technologies.

These proceedings contain a collection of papers that reflect the variegated research activities in the field. The volume includes papers addressing novel interaction technologies for CSCW systems, new models and architectures for groupware systems, studies of communication and coordination among mobile actors, studies of cooperative work in complex settings, studies of groupware systems in actual use in real-world settings, and theories and techniques to support the development of cooperative applications. The papers present emerging technologies alongside new methods and approaches to the development of this important class of applications. The work in this volume represents the best of the current research and practice within CSCW. The collection of papers presented here will appeal to researchers and practitioners alike, as they combine an understanding of the nature of work with the possibility offered by new technologies.
