Download or read book Assessment of Wingtip Modifications to Increase the Fuel Efficiency of Air Force Aircraft written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-08-06 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high cost of aviation fuel has resulted in increased attention by Congress and the Air Force on improving military aircraft fuel efficiency. One action considered is modification of the aircraft's wingtip by installing, for example, winglets to reduce drag. While common on commercial aircraft, such modifications have been less so on military aircraft. In an attempt to encourage greater Air Force use in this area, Congress, in H. Rept. 109-452, directed the Air Force to provide a report examining the feasibility of modifying its aircraft with winglets. To assist in this effort, the Air Force asked the NRC to evaluate its aircraft inventory and identify those aircraft that may be good candidates for winglet modifications. This reportâ€"which considers other wingtip modifications in addition to wingletsâ€"presents a review of wingtip modifications; an examination of previous analyses and experience with such modifications; and an assessment of wingtip modifications for various Air Force aircraft and potential investment strategies.
Download or read book General Aviation Aircraft Design written by Snorri Gudmundsson and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 1058 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find the right answer the first time with this useful handbook of preliminary aircraft design. Written by an engineer with close to 20 years of design experience, General Aviation Aircraft Design: Applied Methods and Procedures provides the practicing engineer with a versatile handbook that serves as the first source for finding answers to realistic aircraft design questions. The book is structured in an "equation/derivation/solved example" format for easy access to content. Readers will find it a valuable guide to topics such as sizing of horizontal and vertical tails to minimize drag, sizing of lifting surfaces to ensure proper dynamic stability, numerical performance methods, and common faults and fixes in aircraft design. In most cases, numerical examples involve actual aircraft specs. Concepts are visually depicted by a number of useful black-and-white figures, photos, and graphs (with full-color images included in the eBook only). Broad and deep in coverage, it is intended for practicing engineers, aerospace engineering students, mathematically astute amateur aircraft designers, and anyone interested in aircraft design. - Organized by articles and structured in an "equation/derivation/solved example" format for easy access to the content you need - Numerical examples involve actual aircraft specs - Contains high-interest topics not found in other texts, including sizing of horizontal and vertical tails to minimize drag, sizing of lifting surfaces to ensure proper dynamic stability, numerical performance methods, and common faults and fixes in aircraft design - Provides a unique safety-oriented design checklist based on industry experience - Discusses advantages and disadvantages of using computational tools during the design process - Features detailed summaries of design options detailing the pros and cons of each aerodynamic solution - Includes three case studies showing applications to business jets, general aviation aircraft, and UAVs - Numerous high-quality graphics clearly illustrate the book's concepts (note: images are full-color in eBook only)

Download or read book General Aviation Aircraft Design written by Snorri Gudmundsson and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Aviation Aircraft Design, Second Edition, continues to be the engineer's best source for answers to realistic aircraft design questions. The book has been expanded to provide design guidance for additional classes of aircraft, including seaplanes, biplanes, UAS, high-speed business jets, and electric airplanes. In addition to conventional powerplants, design guidance for battery systems, electric motors, and complete electric powertrains is offered. The second edition contains new chapters: - Thrust Modeling for Gas Turbines - Longitudinal Stability and Control - Lateral and Directional Stability and Control These new chapters offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives and introduce hinge moments and basic control system design. Furthermore, all chapters have been reorganized and feature updated material with additional analysis methods. This edition also provides an introduction to design optimization using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner. Written by an engineer with more than 25 years of design experience, professional engineers, aircraft designers, aerodynamicists, structural analysts, performance analysts, researchers, and aerospace engineering students will value the book as the classic go-to for aircraft design. - The printed book is now in color, with 1011 figures and illustrations! - Presents the most common methods for conceptual aircraft design - Clear presentation splits text into shaded regions, separating engineering topics from mathematical derivations and examples - Design topics range from the "new" 14 CFR Part 23 to analysis of ducted fans. All chapters feature updated material with additional analysis methods. Many chapters have been reorganized for further help. Introduction to design optimization is provided using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner - Three new chapters are offered, two of which focus on stability and control. These offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives. The chapters introduce hinge moments and basic control system design - Real-world examples using aircraft such as the Cirrus SR-22 and Learjet 45
