Book The DFS Distributed File System

Download or read book The DFS Distributed File System written by Ananth K. Rao and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis describes the design of an operating system independent distributed file system (DFS) and details the implementation, on a cooperating set of server computers interconnected by means of a communications network. The DFS provides the mechanism by which the file systems of these physically dispersed units are integrated into a single logical unit. Users and application programs thus have the illusion that their files are on a single computer system, even though in reality they may be physically distributed around the network. This location transparency frees users from having to remember details such as the current location of the file and also affords considerable mobility, allowing access to files from any workstation. In addition, automatic storage replication and an atomic transaction mechanism provides high reliability and improved availability in the distributed environment in the face of site failure."--Abstract.

Book Disconnected Operation in a Distributed File System

Download or read book Disconnected Operation in a Distributed File System written by James J. Kistler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-12-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the author's PhD thesis which was selected during the 1993 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Competition as one of the three best submissions. The focus of this work is on the issue of availability in distributed file systems. It presents the important new technique called disconnected operation, in which clients mask failures and voluntary network detachments by emulating the functionality of servers where actual server-oriented solutions are inadequate. This permits client operation even under complete isolation from the server; the clean integration of mobile computers into the system is an important side-effect of the new technique. The design and implementation of disconnected file service in a working system, the Coda file system, is described in detail.

Book Consistent Distributed Storage

Download or read book Consistent Distributed Storage written by Vincent Gramoli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a shared memory abstraction in distributed systems is a powerful tool that can simplify the design and implementation of software systems for networked platforms. This enables the system designers to work with abstract readable and writable objects without the need to deal with the complexity and dynamism of the underlying platform. The key property of shared memory implementations is the consistency guarantee that it provides under concurrent access to the shared objects. The most intuitive memory consistency model is atomicity because of its equivalence with a memory system where accesses occur serially, one at a time. Emulations of shared atomic memory in distributed systems is an active area of research and development. The problem proves to be challenging, and especially so in distributed message passing settings with unreliable components, as is often the case in networked systems. We present several approaches to implementing shared memory services with the help of replication on top of message-passing distributed platforms subject to a variety of perturbations in the computing medium.

Book The Design and Implementation of a Log structured File System

Download or read book The Design and Implementation of a Log structured File System written by Mendel Rosenblum and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have implemented a prototype log-structured file system called Sprite LFS; it outperforms current Unix file systems by an order of magnitude for small-file writes and matches or exceeds Unix performance for reads and large writes. Even when the overhead for cleaning is included, Sprite LFS can use 70% of the disk bandwidth for writing. Unix file systems typically can use only 5-10%.

Book Proceedings of the International Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Security for Information Systems CISIS 2008

Download or read book Proceedings of the International Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Security for Information Systems CISIS 2008 written by Emilio Corchado and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research scenario in advanced systems for protecting critical infrastructures and for deeply networked information tools highlights a growing link between security issues and the need for intelligent processing abilities in the area of information s- tems. To face the ever-evolving nature of cyber-threats, monitoring systems must have adaptive capabilities for continuous adjustment and timely, effective response to modifications in the environment. Moreover, the risks of improper access pose the need for advanced identification methods, including protocols to enforce comput- security policies and biometry-related technologies for physical authentication. C- putational Intelligence methods offer a wide variety of approaches that can be fruitful in those areas, and can play a crucial role in the adaptive process by their ability to learn empirically and adapt a system’s behaviour accordingly. The International Workshop on Computational Intelligence for Security in Inf- mation Systems (CISIS) proposes a meeting ground to the various communities - volved in building intelligent systems for security, namely: information security, data mining, adaptive learning methods and soft computing among others. The main goal is to allow experts and researchers to assess the benefits of learning methods in the data-mining area for information-security applications. The Workshop offers the opportunity to interact with the leading industries actively involved in the critical area of security, and have a picture of the current solutions adopted in practical domains. This volume of Advances in Soft Computing contains accepted papers presented at CISIS’08, which was held in Genova, Italy, on October 23rd–24th, 2008.

Book The SIMPOS Distributed File System

Download or read book The SIMPOS Distributed File System written by Kaoru Yoshida and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The personal sequential inference machines: PSI and PSI-II and its object-oriented logic programming and operating system, SIMPOS, have been developed as part of the fifth generation project at ICOT. At present, more than three hundred PSI machines and some other machines have been connected to each other via LANs and WANs, and have been used not only for research and development but also for actual daily work. This paper describes the design and implementation of the SIMPOS distributed file system. It was first designed as a local file system; as the need to share resources over the network has arisen, it has gradually evolved into a distributed file system, through revisions and extensions. The goal of the distributed file system was to provide a network-transparent file access environment without loss of compatibility with the existing application software

Book Building a Columnar Database on RAMCloud

Download or read book Building a Columnar Database on RAMCloud written by Christian Tinnefeld and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the field of parallel database management systems and illustrates the great variety of solutions based on a shared-storage or a shared-nothing architecture. Constantly dropping memory prices and the desire to operate with low-latency responses on large sets of data paved the way for main memory-based parallel database management systems. However, this area is currently dominated by the shared-nothing approach in order to preserve the in-memory performance advantage by processing data locally on each server. The main argument this book makes is that such an unilateral development will cease due to the combination of the following three trends: a) Today’s network technology features remote direct memory access (RDMA) and narrows the performance gap between accessing main memory on a server and of a remote server to and even below a single order of magnitude. b) Modern storage systems scale gracefully, are elastic and provide high-availability. c) A modern storage system such as Stanford’s RAM Cloud even keeps all data resident in the main memory. Exploiting these characteristics in the context of a main memory-based parallel database management system is desirable. The book demonstrates that the advent of RDMA-enabled network technology makes the creation of a parallel main memory DBMS based on a shared-storage approach feasible.
