Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a data flow multiprocessor designed and implemented with standard laboratory microcomputer boards. Intel SBC 80/20 small board computers were used since their design supported a multibus structure required for multiprocessing. Current data flow techniques were researched in order to find a technique that could be implemented through software. A packet communication architecture was chosen for implementation since other data flow techniques required specialized hardware. The requirements of the multiprocessor were defined using structured analysis techniques. these requirements were then translated into structured modulas. The software modules were then implemented and tested in a top down approach. The data flow multiprocessor software was tested by executing complete data flow programs. The results of the tests demonstrated the functionality of the multiprocessor. However, the multiprocessor software was limited in some respects. The memory allocated for the storage of data flow programs limited the maximum number of data flow instructions that could be represented to only 128. The mathematical operations were also limited in that only 8 bit computations were allowed.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a discussion of the application of data-flow machine concepts to the design and implementation of database machines which execute relational algebra queries. We analyze the performance of multiprocessor nested-loops and sort-merge join algorithms and show that the nested-loops algorithm is generally superior. Three levels of operand granularity for data-flow database machines are introduced and compared using the nested-loops join algorithm. We demonstrate that relation-level granularity is too coarse and that tuple-level granularity is too fine. The third level of granularity, a page of a relation, is shown to be the best choice from both hardware and software viewpoints. Finally a preliminary design for a data-flow database machine which utilizes page-level granularity and supports distributed control of instruction execution is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Modern multimedia systems are becoming increasingly multiprocessor and heterogeneous to match the high performance and low power demands placed on them by the large number of applications. The concurrent execution of these applications causes interference and unpredictability in the performance of these systems. In Multimedia Multiprocessor Systems, an analysis mechanism is presented to accurately predict the performance of multiple applications executing concurrently. With high consumer demand the time-to-market has become significantly lower. To cope with the complexity in designing such systems, an automated design-flow is needed that can generate systems from a high-level architectural description such that they are not error-prone and consume less time. Such a design methodology is presented for multiple use-cases -- combinations of active applications. A resource manager is also presented to manage the various resources in the system, and to achieve the goals of performance prediction, admission control and budget enforcement.

Distributed systems are extraordinarily complex and allow many distinct viewpoints. Therefore the literature on distributed systems sometimes may look rather confusing to people not working in the field. Nevertheless there is no reason for resignation: the Summer School was able to show considerable convergence in ideas, approaches and concepts for distributed systems.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
