Book Ambient Intelligence

Download or read book Ambient Intelligence written by Werner Weber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-12 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambient intelligence is the vision of a technology that will become invisibly embedded in our natural surroundings, present whenever we need it, enabled by simple and effortless interactions, attuned to all our senses, adaptive to users and context-sensitive, and autonomous. High-quality information access and personalized content must be available to everybody, anywhere, and at any time. This book addresses ambient intelligence used to support human contacts and accompany an individual's path through the complicated modern world. From the technical standpoint, distributed electronic intelligence is addressed as hardware vanishing into the background. Devices used for ambient intelligence are small, low-power, low weight, and (very importantly) low-cost; they collaborate or interact with each other; and they are redundant and error-tolerant. This means that the failure of one device will not cause failure of the whole system. Since wired connections often do not exist, radio methods will play an important role for data transfer. This book addresses various aspects of ambient intelligence, from applications that are imminent since they use essentially existing technologies, to ambitious ideas whose realization is still far away, due to major unsolved technical challenges.

Book Tibetan Medicinal Plants

Download or read book Tibetan Medicinal Plants written by Christa Kletter and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, modern medicine relies on so called traditional or ancient medical knowledge. Holistic practices such as adhering to proper diet, observing rules for appropriate behavior, and administering medical preparations are coupled with the latest technology and methods to treat the whole patient. In light of this trend, there is much to be gained from understanding of one of the oldest medical systems still in existence. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides you a detailed analysis of how Tibetan plants are used in this centuries old system. The book opens with a summary of Tibetan medicine and covers the various habitats in which the plants are found. The main part of this volume encompasses 60 monographs listed by the Tibetan plant name. Each monograph consists of several chapters addressing different topics related either to the Tibetan or the Western approach. Most of the monographs contain a description of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the used plant parts, and anatomical features of 76 plants are provided. Each monograph presents an overview of the known chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of each plant and describes their use in Tibetan medicine. In contrast to other publications on Tibetan medicine, where translations of the Tibetan terms are given in other languages, this book treats the Tibetan word as a technical term, keeps the Tibetan term and explains its meaning, lessening confusion by reducing the number of translations. Traditional Tibetan medicine has been in existence for centuries. Curative practices existed in the prebuddistic era, and the art of healing developed more than 2500 years ago. Tibetan Medicinal Plants provides a comprehensive overview of all plant types, thus making it easier to grasp the Tibetan concept. It gives you a comprehensive look at this centuries old science.

Book Querying Moving Objects Detected by Sensor Networks

Download or read book Querying Moving Objects Detected by Sensor Networks written by Markus Bestehorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declarative query interfaces to Sensor Networks (SN) have become a commodity. These interfaces allow access to SN deployed for collecting data using relational queries. However, SN are not confined to data collection, but may track object movement, e.g., wildlife observation or traffic monitoring. While rational approaches are well suited for data collection, research on Moving Object Databases (MOD) has shown that relational operators are unsuitable to express information needs on object movement, i.e., spatio-temporal queries. Querying Moving Objects Detected by Sensor Networks studies declarative access to SN that track moving objects. The properties of SN present a straightforward application of MOD, e.g., node failures, limited detection ranges and accuracy which vary over time etc. Furthermore, point sets used to model MOD-entities like regions assume the availability of very accurate knowledge regarding the spatial extend of these entities, assuming such knowledge is unrealistic for most SN. This book is the first that defines a complete set of spatio-temporal operators for SN while taking into account their properties. Based on these operators, we systematically investigate how to derive query results from object detections by SN. Finally, process spatio-temporal queries are shown in SN efficiently, i.e., reducing the communication between nodes. The evaluation shows that the measures reduce communication by 45%-89%.

Book Context Aware Pervasive Systems

Download or read book Context Aware Pervasive Systems written by Seng Loke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-12-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of aware systems is among the most exciting trends in computing today, fueled by recent developments in pervasive computing, including new computers worn by users, embedded devices, smart appliances, sensors, and varieties of wireless networking technology. Context-Aware Pervasive Systems: The Architecture of a New Breed of Applications introduces a diverse set of application areas and provides blueprints for building context-aware behavior into applications. Reviewing the anatomy of context-aware pervasive applications, this resource covers abstract architecture. It examines mobile services, appliances, smart devices, software agents, electronic communication, sensor networks, security frameworks, and intelligent software agents. The book also discusses the use of context awareness for communication among people, devices, and software agents and how sensors can be aware of their own situations. Exploring the use of physical context for controlling and enhancing security in pervasive computing environments, this guide addresses mirror worlds and elucidates design perspectives based on a declarative programming language paradigm. This carefully paced volume presents a timely and relevant introduction to the emergence of context-aware systems and brings together architectures and principles of context-aware computing in one source.
