Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications

Download or read book Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications written by Peter H. Dawson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications provides a comprehensive discussion of quadrupoles and their applications. It proceeds from a general explanation of the action of radiofrequency quadrupole fields to the description of their utilization in mass analyzers—such as the quadrupole mass filter, the monopole, the three-dimensional quadrupole ion trap, and various time-of-flight spectrometers—and finally to the characteristic applications of quadrupoles. A multi-author format has been adopted to provide broader-than-usual viewpoint in the book. The book begins by explaining the principles of operation of quadrupole devices. These include ion trajectories and computer simulations of performance; analytical theory; numerical methods of calculation of performance, including the recently developed application of phase-space dynamics; and fringing fields and other field imperfections. Subsequent chapters provide design and performance evaluations of the mass filter, the monopole, ion traps, and time-of-flight instruments; and describe areas of application where quadrupole devices have made the greatest impact because of their particular advantages and disadvantages.

Book Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry A Practical Guide

Download or read book Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry A Practical Guide written by O. David Sparkman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-05-17 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry: A Practical Guide follows the highly successful first edition by F.G. Kitson, B.S. Larsen, and C.N. McEwen (1996), which was designed as an indispensible resource for GC/MS practitioners regardless of whether they are a novice or well experienced. The Fundamentals section has been extensively reworked from the original edition to give more depth of an understanding of the techniques and science involved with GC/MS. Even with this expansion, the original brevity and simple didactic style has been retained. Information on chromatographic peak deconvolution has been added along with a more in-depth understanding of the use of mass spectral databases in the identification of unknowns. Since the last edition, a number of advances in GC inlet systems and sample introduction techniques have occurred, and they are included in the new edition. Other updates include a discussion on fast GC and options for combining GC detectors with mass spectrometry. The section regarding GC Conditions, Derivatization, and Mass Spectral Interpretation of Specific Compound Types has the same number of compound types as the original edition, but the information in each section has been expanded to not only explain some of the spectra but to also explain why certain fragmentations take place. The number of Appendices has been increased from 12 to 17. The Appendix on Atomic Masses and Isotope Abundances has been expanded to provide tools to aid in determination of elemental composition from isotope peak intensity ratios. An appendix with examples on "Steps to follow in the determination of elemental compositions based on isotope peak intensities" has been added. Appendices on whether to use GC/MS or LC/MS, third-party software for use in data analysis, list of information required in reporting GC/MS data, X+1 and X+2 peak relative intensities based on the number of atoms of carbon in an ion, and list of available EI mass spectral databases have been added. Others such as the ones on derivatization, isotope peak patterns for ions with Cl and/or Br, terms used in GC and in mass spectrometry, and tips on setting up, maintaining and troubleshooting a GC/MS system have all been expanded and updated. - Covers the practical instruction necessary for successful operation of GC/MS equipment - Reviews the latest advances in instrumentation, ionization methods, and quantitation - Includes troubleshooting techniques and a variety of additional information useful for the GC/MS practitioner - A true benchtop reference - A guide to a basic understanding of the components of a Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) - Quick References to data interpretation - Ready source for information on new analyses

Book Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry and its Applications

Download or read book Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry and its Applications written by E.W. Schlag and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) has had its origin in the simplicity of construction and application of such instruments together with the high transmission and the great increase in resolution that has been achieved. The instrument lends itself naturally to a coupling with pulsed laser sources, though this is not a prerequisite. It also affords a time resolution far beyond that traditionally achieved with mass spectrometric rapid scan techniques - a recent example being the real-time analysis of a multi-component mixture from an automobile exhaust. Furthermore, the mass range appears to be extremely large: mass up to 500 kDa and beyond what is being readily measured in the laboratory today. The present set of contributions attempts to give a survey of current applications from many of the active groups in the field. A variety of new applications are considered which are no doubt just the beginning of large new areas of application. By presenting this work in book form it is hoped that it will be of help to the many groups intending to initiate work in this rapidly expanding new area of mass spectrometry.

Excerpt: ... well satisfied with the impression he had made upon all concerned. Bertha had mounted to her room and waited, first sending her maid away. Presently her door had been opened and her husband entered, and for an hour she had been listening to his outburst of distorted jealousy. The attack was finally losing its force, and turning a shoulder she seated herself at the dressingtable and began to cut the threads with which a jeweled ornament was sewn to her bodice. In the mirror his face looked at her with all the sneering, abandoned malevolence to which she was so accustomed. "If you are quite through, I will ring for my maid," she said at last. "Im through for now, but you and your discarded lover--your former kept man" She cut a thread very carefully. "Ill have the truth from one of you or the other--do you hear me, you common hussy? You vile street" His elbow brushed some roses. He dashed the vase to the floor and stamped petals and Sevres into the rug. She unhooked her pearl collar, and drew it from her neck. "All I want you to do," said the hoarse whine behind her--the mans anger was evidently ex "In the mirror his face looked at her with all the sneering. malevolence to which she was so accustomed." hausted on the vase--"all I ask of you is just to confess. She knew it would not. He would want details. She smiled with the thought of the whole mad, foolish, trivial thing. With a scream he clutched her. She twisted away, but his fist in her laces tore them to the girdle. Still holding the torn strip, he thrust his twitching face close to hers. Her...
