Book excerpt: The Bottom Line: “An unputdownable historical thriller that gloriously tethers ancient Rome to the 1960s.” — BestThrillers.com In the sixth installment of Nick Aaron’s wildly popular Blind Sleuth Mysteries series, set in 1964, 41-year-old intern Daisy Hayes travels to Rome. There, upon invitation from doting Father Boudry, she has the opportunity to study sculptures by touch at the Vatican Museums. It’s a rare treat — as Daisy astutely points out, the blind aren’t allowed to touch sculptures in museums. But as we all know, sleuths — even amateur ones like Daisy — can never truly go on holiday without finding a delicious case to solve. In this case, Daisy’s mystery happened 1900 years earlier. Desiderata, for whom the book is named, was a blind masseuse working in the Roman baths who overheard plans of an impending coup. Desiderata carved the message into a stone, only to be discovered by Daisy during her studies 19 centuries later. Through Daisy’s investigation, the book’s primary suspense happens in flashbacks, as Aaron’s tale of Desi and friend Feli puts both in mortal danger. As Daisy unlocks one clue after the other — including the location of a special chapel — we are granted increasingly compelling insights into first-century Roman life. Aaron’s cinematic historical descriptions are fully engrossing. Standout passages include those at the Circus of Caligula, in which Nero anxiously awaits a series of gory executions, and during the great fire, when you can practically feel the heat coming off the burning city. Aaron moves between the two timelines seamlessly, and while Daisy’s journey is compelling, Desiderata’s treacherous plight is what makes the book truly memorable. That goes double for fans of Roman history — the book is chock full of fascinating nuggets that even seasoned Romanophiles may not know. While The Desiderata Stone will please fans of the series, the novel also works perfectly well as an entry point to Aaron’s work. (BestThrillers review)

Then she got a letter from an archaeologist, asking her to help make sense of a mysterious message that had just been dug up in Rome. Time to hook up again with Morag, her deaf friend from the ‘project’ in 1964, and to go back to the Eternal City. In AD 64, after Feli’s death, Desiderata had scores to settle and a ‘twin sister’ to bury. Her new friends the Christians gave her sanctuary, but her relationship with them was a bit strained. Soon the ‘Community’ and their blind protégée had to part company. Eventually, assisted by her uncle Balbus, ex-centurion of the X Fretensis legion, she found a path out of her troubles, and helped him search for a stolen treasure. So, 1928 years later, Daisy went looking for a gold cache from antiquity, hoping to solve a new mystery, and even more to reconnect with Desi, her soulmate from ancient Rome.

She and Father Contini went back to the crypt and made some disturbing discoveries. Not about Desiderata herself, but about the archaeologist who had investigated the place in the thirties. The quest now led them to the German town of Trier, where they teamed up again in the fall of that same year to continue their research. In AD 67 things were looking good for Desi and the Pomponius family in their beautiful domus: they lived like princes. But as her friends the Christians went through yet another period of persecution, the blind young woman found it hard to decide on who’s side she wanted to be and what she intended to do with her life. Would she ever find love? So both she and Daisy ended up trying to grapple with the greatest riddle of all: “Who are you really, Desiderata?” And what’s more, did she become a Christian in the end?

Book excerpt: Written 75 years ago, Desiderata achieved fame as the anthem of the sixties' hippie-dom - the subject of many millions of posters and handbills - and famously narrated by Les Crane in his 1971 song version of the poem. Over the years Desiderata has provided a kind and gentle philosophy, a refreshing perspective on life's bigger picture. This new presentation of the prose poem will bring it to the attention of a new generation. The origins of Desiderata were, for many years, shrouded in mystery. Once thought to have originated from St. Paul's Church in Baltimore, Maryland in the seventeenth century it was later discovered that American poet Max Ehrmann had written it in 1927. Presented in a refreshingly modern design, Desiderata will appeal to a younger generation looking to find the meaning of life, and to baby-boomers who'll recall Desiderata from their youth.

Book excerpt: The Pale King has been defeated, his legions decimated. The Dark God Mohg has been destroyed. And the evil corporation, Duratek, has been disbanded, foiled in its efforts to strip-mine the world of Eldh. And for our heroes, three years have passed in relative peace. But only relative, because every one of them know in their hearts that their duties are not yet ended. For perihelion approaches, as the two worlds continue to grow nearer. And bad things are coming in its wake. In the skies over Earth, astronomers have noted an anomaly which seems to be swallowing stars whole. On Eldh, these rifts in the sky are appearing as well--and the dragon Sinfathisar tells Grace Beckett that, if left unchecked, these holes of anti-being will annihilate all of creation forever. He adds that only Travis Wilder--whom the Mournish believe is fated to raise the lost city of Morindu the Dark from the desert sands that hide and hold it--can save the world. But what is the connection between the lost city of the sorcerers and the wounds that rift the heavens? As Grace goes in search of Travis and Travis goes in search of his kidnapped daughter, all the threads of fate begin to pull together, revealing ancient mysteries on both worlds, and connections within connections that carry all the way back through time. With both worlds increasingly wracked by tempests and earthquakes and a palpable sense of hopelessness and despair, and with magic sputtering and dying around them, can our heroes patch together the missing pieces of the puzzle before all of life is annihilated?

Book excerpt: "The educational system in South Africa has failed the young learners of this new nation," says author Bryan Britton who has contributed this work as a very small step in the giant leap necessary to rehabilitate our highly susceptible youth and help them make sound and moral judgements. There has been little concern for the aspirations of the young people of South Africa. The benefits of learning, character building, moral education and religion were lost in the turmoil of the 1980s and 1990s, resulting in a rudderless, sometimes murderous element, pervading South African society. The Rainbow Nation is today the crime mecca of the world, and the haves' now have more and the have nots', appallingly less. Can we put an end to this moral decay? Perhaps adopting sound, non-sexist, non-racial and evergreen wisdom from the past can be used to commence regenerating the shredded moral fibre of this country? To aid youngsters in their search for ethics, the author has gathered a selection of pertinent wisdom from the past. Perhaps young people in South Africa will see in these excerpts, building blocks with which to construct a viable morality for their young lives and hence for the country they are destined to inherit.
