This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many observers, the Great War, with its static trench lines and new mechanical technology - i including the arrival of the aircraft, the machine gun and the tank - wrote a final full stop to the long history of the horse in warfare. But if the western front proved frustrating for the Cavalry, it was not the same story in the Middle Eastern theatre, as this fine book shows. As Lieutenant-General Harry Chauvel, commander of the Desert Corps, writes in his introduction; the book ' demonstrate(s) to the world that the horse-soldier is just as valuable in modern warfare as he ever has been in the past. Indeed, the whole of the operations in Palestine and Syria, under General Allenby, were text-book illustrations of the perfect combinations of all arms, both in attack and defence, and the last operations in this theatre, which led to the total destruction of Turkish Arms and the elimination of Germany's Allies from the War, could not have been undertaken without large masses of Cavalry'.The Desert Corps was formed in Egypt in June 1917 when the energetic Sir Edmund 'Bull' Allenby took command of the Allied forces in the Middle East. Initially composed of three divisions, the arrival of the Indian Cavalry Division from France augmented the mounted Corps early in 1918. It played a major part in driving the Turks from the Suez Canal zone, and then across the Sinai Desert into Palestine. A cosmopolitan Corps, the Desert Cavalry was composed of troops from Australia, New Zealand, India and France as well as Britain. On top of determined enemy resistance, the Corps coped with intense heat, dust, sandstorms and insect bites in summer; and freezing cold and heavy rains in winter. The Corps' role in reconnoitering and occupying Sinai; Gaza; Palestine; Jordan and finally Syria were crucial to Allenby's success in capturing Jerusalem and Damascus and finally crushing Ottoman Turkish domination of the Middle East and helping to end the Great War in 1918. At a time when western forces are once again engaged in active operations in the Middle East, this book, written by a veteran of the campaign, will interest all serious students of military history in general and the role of the Cavalry in particular.

Book Gallipoli

Download or read book Gallipoli written by Christopher Pugsley and published by Raupo. This book was released on 2008 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gallipoli is perhaps New Zealand's most enduring myth, our 'finest hour', a bitter, bloody and tragic campaign in which 2721 young men lost their lives of the 8556 who fought there. The campaign is glorified in our observance of Anzac Day, but the true story of New Zealand's involvement has never been comprehensively told. Army historian Christopher Pugsley, an expert in the campaign, has now collated his extensive research and interviews with survivors to provide a narrative which takes into account every aspect of Gallipoli and its impact on both the New Zealanders who fought there and on the country that sent them. Gallipoli - The New Zealand Story provides the first major evaluation of one of our most important historical events, and many decades after the battle, strips bare the myth of Anzac and does justice to the reality of that epic campaign.

Book With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War

Download or read book With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War written by Major T H Darley and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Australia the First World War remains the most costly conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. In general terms with Australian unit histories the quality of authorship is very good, most of them share the common strength of making plentiful mention of the individual officers and men who served, fought, died, was wounded, or taken prisoner, or who came safely home at the end of it all. They are a prime source for genealogists and military historians.

Book War Letters of General Monash

Download or read book War Letters of General Monash written by John Monash and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'We have received our sailing orders, and inside of a few hours shall be in the thick of the greatest combined naval and military operation in history, with Australia in the pride of place. That we will succeed I do not entertain any doubt, but that I shall come through unscathed and alive is not so certain . . . with the full and active life I have had, I need not regret the prospect of a sudden end with dismay.' John Monash, 24 April 1915 These extraordinary, intimate letters from General Sir John Monash to his wife and daughter, record his experiences throughout World War I, from landing at Gallipoli to leading decisive battles on the Western Front. Monash describes with great candour the challenges of ordering the lives of tens of thousands of troops and meeting with various dignitaries, including King George. Regarded as the best allied commander of World War I, Monash writes with remarkable insight, providing one of the most moving personal accounts ever written of an Australian soldier at war. This edition, reprinted in full for the first time since 1935, contains newly discovered letters, including Monash's moving final missive to his wife before the Gallipoli landing. With an introduction and notes by historian A.K. Macdougall, and new photos, this volume provides unparalleled insight into the experience of Australians in World War I. 'Long before this letter can possibly reach you, great events which will stir the whole world and go down in history will have happened, to the eternal glory of Australia and all who have participated.' John Monash, 24 April 1915

Book Practicing New Historicism

Download or read book Practicing New Historicism written by Catherine Gallagher and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost twenty years, new historicism has been a highly controversial and influential force in literary and cultural studies. In Practicing the New Historicism, two of its most distinguished practitioners reflect on its surprisingly disparate sources and far-reaching effects. In lucid and jargon-free prose, Catherine Gallagher and Stephen Greenblatt focus on five central aspects of new historicism: recurrent use of anecdotes, preoccupation with the nature of representations, fascination with the history of the body, sharp focus on neglected details, and skeptical analysis of ideology. Arguing that new historicism has always been more a passionately engaged practice of questioning and analysis than an abstract theory, Gallagher and Greenblatt demonstrate this practice in a series of characteristically dazzling readings of works ranging from paintings by Joos van Gent and Paolo Uccello to Hamlet and Great Expectations. By juxtaposing analyses of Renaissance and nineteenth-century topics, the authors uncover a number of unexpected contrasts and connections between the two periods. Are aspects of the dispute over the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist detectable in British political economists' hostility to the potato? How does Pip's isolation in Great Expectations shed light on Hamlet's doubt? Offering not only an insider's view of new historicism, but also a lively dialogue between a Renaissance scholar and a Victorianist, Practicing the New Historicism is an illuminating and unpredictable performance by two of America's most respected literary scholars. "Gallagher and Greenblatt offer a brilliant introduction to new historicism. In their hands, difficult ideas become coherent and accessible."—Choice "A tour de force of new literary criticism. . . . Gallagher and Greenblatt's virtuoso readings of paintings, potatoes (yes, spuds), religious ritual, and novels—all 'texts'—as well as essays on criticism and the significance of anecdotes, are likely to take their place as model examples of the qualities of the new critical school that they lead. . . . A zesty work for those already initiated into the incestuous world of contemporary literary criticism-and for those who might like to see what all the fuss is about."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review
