Book The Life history and Growth of the Pismo Clam

Download or read book The Life history and Growth of the Pismo Clam written by Frank Walter Weymouth and published by . This book was released on 1923 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercially the Pismo clam (Tivela stultorum)ranks first in importance in California among the clams and third among all the mollusks, being exceeded only by the oyster and the abalone. A second reason for considering this species is that there has been such evidence of depletion as to lead to increasingly more stringent protective laws, all of which have been urged by the residents of the county in which the clam is most abundant. ... An accurate study of the cause and extent of this apparent diminution must await knowledge of at least the fundamental facts of the life history of this clam. ... The more important features are considered to be: the habits, enemies and mortality of the adult; the rate of growth and the factors affecting it; the age at certain significant periods, particularly at sexual maturity and at the time when the legal size is reached; the most common age of clams forming the commercial catch; the season of spawning and the productivity; and the habits, enemies and mortality of the young.

Book Where the river meets the ocean Stories from San Francisco Estuary

Download or read book Where the river meets the ocean Stories from San Francisco Estuary written by Peggy W. Lehman and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2022-11-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is an estuary? Where do they occur? How do they work? Who lives there? And why are estuaries important to our planet? This collection will answer all of these questions and more. Estuaries are places where fresh water from rivers moving downstream from the mountains mixes with salty water moving upstream from the ocean. Estuaries thus contain both fresh and salty water habitats (places) where many kinds of plants and animals can live and grow. San Francisco Estuary is the largest estuary on the West Coast of the United States and is home to millions of people, plants and animals. Our scientists have been studying all aspects of the San Francisco Estuary for nearly 50 years and we have 35 stories to tell about the people, plants, and animals in the estuary. We will tell you horror stories of how tiny poisonous plants and vampire fish kill other fish, and we have success stories of how conservation saves the lives of tiny mice in marshes and birds along the Pacific Flyway. The Collection of stories is divided into six sections, so you can easily find the stories that interest you the most. The first section describes the many kinds of habitats in the estuary, including rivers, shallow bays, wetlands, and marshes, and what makes them a good home for plants, animals, and people. In the second section, the water quality scientists will describe how they use boats, special instruments, and new technology to determine whether the water is healthy for people, plants, and animals. In the third and fourth sections we will tell stories about how plants and animals live in the estuary. Microbiologists will describe the tiny, microscopic plants and animals that live in the estuary, what makes them grow, how important they are as food for animals and why they are sometimes poisonous. Fish scientists will describe the many kinds of fish in the estuary and how we measure their growth, determine where they are, what they eat, and the ways they use both fresh and saltwater habitats to grow and raise their young. In the fifth section, scientists will discuss how invasions of plants and animals from outside of the estuary have changed habitats and the survival of native plants and animals. Lastly, in the sixth section, we will share how scientists in the estuary are using new technologies and management actions to control invasions of unwanted plants and animals, increase the growth of native plants and animals, improve water quality and restore habitats in the estuary.

Book The American Sea

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rezneat Milton Darnell
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2015-05-13
  • ISBN : 1623493013
  • Pages : 586 pages

Download or read book The American Sea written by Rezneat Milton Darnell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Rezneat Darnell worked on this major synthesis of what is known about the Gulf of Mexico. His goal: to bring a deeper understanding of “the American Sea” to students, scientists, managers, and educated citizens of the public at large. The American Sea builds on Darnell’s own research, the research of his graduate students, government agency research reports, data synthesis reports, and literature summaries to present a holistic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Although he is recognized as a pioneer in the study of continental shelf ecology, Darnell largely resisted specialization, remaining throughout his career “the writer and bringer together of things.” Here, he has written a book that embraces history, geology, geography, meteorology, chemistry, biology, ecology, and human relations in one comprehensive reference. Although it is thorough and meticulous in coverage, what comes through in these pages is the enormity, complexity, and mystery of the world that lies just beyond the Texas vacation beach, the Louisiana wetland, or the Mexico fishing village. In addition to photographs of deep water and other organisms that are included in the book, a number of illustrations have been added to provide excellent visual material, including historical and ocean floor maps and many works of original art depicting marine species, sea turtles, fish, and crustaceans.
