Book Provenance Paleogeography and Mass movement of Deep water Depositional Systems in Arc adjacent Basins

Download or read book Provenance Paleogeography and Mass movement of Deep water Depositional Systems in Arc adjacent Basins written by Glenn Russell Sharman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plate convergence and associated subduction result in a dynamic setting where the development and evolution of sedimentary systems are influenced by a variety of autogenic and allogenic processes. Correspondingly, patterns of sedimentation within basins that form trench-ward of magmatic arcs (i.e., forearc basins) are often complex as a result of the interplay between interrelated factors that include: (1) magmatism and orogenesis in the hinterland, (2) changes in subduction regime (e.g., steep versus shallow angle of plate descent), and (3) local basin deformation. This dissertation examines the tectonic and sedimentary processes that acted in concert to influence the evolution of two arc-adjacent sedimentary systems: the Late Cretaceous-Eocene California forearc (Chapters 1 and 2) and the late Miocene Taranaki Basin, New Zealand (Chapter 3). These three chapters include investigation of a variety of processes that occur at different temporal and spatial scales. Specifically, major themes of this dissertation include (1) the evolution of sediment dispersal patterns in response to changes in continental arc magmatism and subduction regime (Chapter 1), (2) the development and early history of the central San Andreas fault system and the paleogeographic setting of central California (Chapter 2), and (3) submarine mass-movement and patterns of soft-sediment deformation within a basin-floor sedimentary succession (Chapter 3). The data types and methods used in each chapter are diverse and include detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, subsurface datasets (e.g., well logs and seismic-reflection data), outcrop description, and structural analysis.

Book Paleocene Depositional History of the Cretaceous Paleogene Impact Basin Yucatan Peninsula Mexico

Download or read book Paleocene Depositional History of the Cretaceous Paleogene Impact Basin Yucatan Peninsula Mexico written by Katherine E. O'Malley and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 2016, the International Ocean Discovery Program set out on Expedition 364 to recover core from the peak ring of Chicxulub Impact Crater at Site M0077. In total, 829 m of core was collected spanning granite to Paleogene sedimentary rocks. From this core, we have a well-preserved record of the Paleocene, which represents ~10 million years post impact in just under 10 m of sedimentary rock record. This has presented an incredible research opportunity, as we have gained invaluable information on how the environment responded and recovered from the global catastrophe that was the Chicxulub Impact. The Paleocene at M0077 is highly condensed and comprised of predominantly pelagic carbonate rocks. High resolution core logging and thin section analysis were used to identify facies in the Paleocene. Facies include marlstone, argillaceous wackestone, foraminiferal wackestone, and rare coarser grained lithologies such as packstone and grainstone. Overall, the Paleocene exhibits a succession of rhythmically bedded cycles composed of marlstones grading to argillaceous wackestones and capped by foraminiferal wackestones. Coarser grained lithologies only exist in the lower and uppermost portion of the core. In total, 72 cycles that ranged from 5-30 cm thick are identified and grouped into six larger packages based on pattern similarities in color, lithology, ichnofabric indices, and geochemical data. These cycles are interpreted as parasequences, and show predictable stacking patterns that allow us to make sequence stratigraphic analyses. Each package represents one to two systems tracts, and some can be correlated to eustatic sea level change. Recorded in this core is the progression of an initial sea level lowstand immediately post impact, and the fluctuation between highstands, lowstands, and transgressive systems tracts that follow. Major and trace elements were analyzed throughout the core, as well as delta13Corg and delta15Nbulk values. Three sets of geochemical proxies (paleoredox, detrital input, productivity) were used to provide insight into paleoecological conditions. Initial conditions in the crater show a period of high productivity, which tapers off within a million years post impact. Redox conditions vary, and show one major anoxic event, with other enrichments likely representing periods of pore water euxinia or increases in stratification leading to a more robust redox gradient.

Book Thermo tectonic Record of Hyperextension Structural Inversion and Foreland Basin Evolution of the Eastern and Central Pyrenees

Download or read book Thermo tectonic Record of Hyperextension Structural Inversion and Foreland Basin Evolution of the Eastern and Central Pyrenees written by Margaret Larkin Odlum and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct constraints on processes associated with rifting and mantle exhumation are necessary to understand the thermal and structural evolution of continental rift systems, and the role of pre-existing crustal architecture on orogenesis and foreland basin development. This work constrains the Early Cretaceous hyperextension history along the Iberia-European margin and how rift inheritance affected the structural and foreland basin evolution of the Late Cretaceous-Oligocene Pyrenean orogeny. Chapters 1 and 2 aim to understand the thermal and structural evolution of the North Pyrenean basement massifs during Early Cretaceous rifting and hyperextension using multi-mineral thermochronometry. These chapters integrate zircon, apatite, and rutile U‐Pb ages from the Agly and Saint Barthélémy massifs that provide new constraints to understand the decoupled versus coupled extensional evolution, exhumation timing of the middle‐lower crust, and the age of juxtaposition of the upper crust granitic pluton with middle crustal gneisses, and fluid-rock interactions along a detachment fault. Novel method integration and approaches using apatite were developed and implemented in these chapters to best interpret the apatite U-Pb ages to gain the most insight into thermal, structural, and fault zone processes in the Early Cretaceous rift system’s distal margin. Chapters 3 and 4 use the sedimentary record in the pro-wedge foreland basins of inversion and orogenesis to understand the provenance, hinterland evolution, and the role of extensional inheritance on the orogenic phase of the margin. This work shows that the eastern Pyrenean foreland basin deposits were sourced from Corsica-Sardinia and the Catalan Coastal Ranges during the Late Cretaceous-Paleocene, and the Pyrenees beginning in the Eocene. Detrital mineral trends across the basins suggest that the pro-wedge foreland basin developed and remained segmented throughout the Late Cretaceous-Oligocene. The results from these chapters highlight the dominant control of inherited structures and rift basins on controlling the sediment provenance and foreland basin architecture in inverted rift systems. The dissertation aims to show the structural evolution of the Early Cretaceous rifting and thermal and structural processes that were operating within the continental crust at the rift margin, and how this inherited rift architecture affected the orogenic evolution and foreland basin development during the Pyrenean orogeny. These results add to our overall understanding of the structural and thermal evolution during rifting and continental break-up and role of rift inheritance in the evolution of superimposed orogenic systems and their associated foreland basins

Book Insights Into the Growth and Decay of Orogenic Wedges from Foreland Basin Successions

Download or read book Insights Into the Growth and Decay of Orogenic Wedges from Foreland Basin Successions written by Theresa M. Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convergent plate margins are dynamic settings where the evolution of sedimentary basins is influenced by a variety of interrelated autogenic and allogenic processes. These include plate tectonic-scale processes such as plate subduction and the development of a volcanic arc, fold-thrust belt, and associated basins; the development of climatic gradients across the orogen; shallow-crustal structural partitioning of the basins into discrete depocenters; and the surficial (topographic) responses to such events. This dissertation examines the interplay of tectonic, sedimentary, and climatic processes during the evolution of two retroarc foreland basin systems: the Late Cretaceous-Eocene Magallanes-Austral basin of Patagonia (Chapters 2 and 3) and the Late Cretaceous-Oligocene Rocky Mountain foreland basin of southwestern Montana (Chapter 4). These chapters investigate a variety of geologic processes that occur at different temporal and spatial scales. Specifically, major goals of this dissertation include (1) generating a paleogeographic reconstruction of latest Cretaceous depositional environments in the Magallanes-Austral basin to better understand the termination of the long-lived deep-marine foreland basin (Chapter 2); (2) utilizing detrital zircon U-Pb ages to understand variations in sediment dispersal patterns and long-term average sedimentation rates during shoaling of the Magallanes-Austral basin (Chapter 3); and (3) integrating structural, stratigraphic, sediment provenance, and stable isotope ([delta] 18O, [delta] 13C) data to better understand the spatial and temporal relationships of tectonic activity and climate (Chapter 4). Data types and methods are diverse, and include detailed outcrop description, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, thin-section petrography, 1-D subsidence modelling, and stable isotope ([delta] 18O, [delta] 13C) stratigraphy from calcic paleosols.
