Book Effects of Speed and Temperature on Crack Toughness and Yield Strength in Mild Steel

Download or read book Effects of Speed and Temperature on Crack Toughness and Yield Strength in Mild Steel written by J. M. KRAFFT and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OF THE CONTINUOUSLY DECREASING LOCAL STRESS RATES IN ADVANCE OF A RAPIDLY LOADED OR OF A MOVING CRACK AND AT LOW TEMPERATURE, ELASTIC BOUNDARY APPEARS TO BE CRITICAL. The upper yield strength determined for such stress rate, taken to the negative 1.5 power, is proportional to the plane strain fracture toughness over an indefinitely large range of speed and temperature. Estimates thus become possible at temperatures so high that fracture toughness would be too large to be evaluated by specimens of reasonable size. Using such estimates, the Charpy notch bar transition for three steels is predicted with good agreement. Further, the effects of crack propagation velocity can be given interpretation quite consistent with observations. (Author).

Book Temperature Dependence of the Fracture Toughness and the Cleavage Fracture Strength of a Pressure Vessel Steel

Download or read book Temperature Dependence of the Fracture Toughness and the Cleavage Fracture Strength of a Pressure Vessel Steel written by H. Kotilainen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new model for the temperature dependence of the fracture toughness has been sought. It is based on the yielding processes at the crack tip, which are thought to be competitive with fracture. Using this method a good correlation between measured and calculated values of fracture toughness has been found for a Cr-Mo-V pressure vessel steel as well as for A533B. It has been thought that the application of this method can reduce the number of surveillance specimens in nuclear reactors.

Book Some Comments on Dynamic Crack Propagation in a High Strength Steel

Download or read book Some Comments on Dynamic Crack Propagation in a High Strength Steel written by Z. Bílek and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence of the dynamic plane-strain fracture toughness, KId, on crack velocity was measured for propagating cracks in SAE4340 steel at room temperature. It has been shown that KId for SAE4340 steel in the quenched-and-tempered condition increases slowly for increasing crack velocity up to ?a ? 100 m/s and then increases sharply above 100 MNm-3/2 at ?a > 1000 m/s.

Book Fracture Properties of a Cold Worked Mild Steel

Download or read book Fracture Properties of a Cold Worked Mild Steel written by EJ. Ripling and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An AISI 1018 steel was rolled various amounts between 0 and 50 percent, after which it was partially stress relieved, and the following properties measured: smooth tensile, Charpy V-notch versus test temperature, fracture toughness, stress corrosion cracking susceptibility, and fatigue crack growth rate.

Book Proceedings of an international conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation

Download or read book Proceedings of an international conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning meeting for a conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation was held at M.LT. in February 1971 and attended by research workers from several industrial, governmental and academic organizations. It was felt that a more specialized meeting would provide a better opportunity for both U.S. and foreign researchers to exchange their ideas and views on dynamic fracture, a subject which is seldom emphasized in national or international fracture conferences. Dynamic crack propagation has been a concern to specialists in many fields: continuum mechanics, metallurgy, geology, polymer chemistry, orthopedics, applied mathematics, as well as structural design and testing. It impinges on a wide variety of problems such as rock breaking and earthquakes, pressure vessels and line pipes, comminution and the per formance of armament and ordnance, etc. Advances have been numerous, covering theories and experiments from both the microscopic and macro scopic points of view. Hence, the need for comparing the theoretical and experimental results and bridging the gaps between the atomistic and continuum approaches must be constantly emphasized. It also appeared that the overall problem of dynamic fracture could benefit from a con solidation of crack models proposed for the various types of materials: metals, ceramics, composites, rocks, glasses, polymers and biomaterials.
