Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Summary, Vol. 29: A Journal of Practical Dentistry; January 1909 There has been but little discussion of the general subject from the clinical standpoint, or of the treatment that should be undertaken to re lieve deformities occasioned by the presence of supernumerary teeth. There has been no systematic attempt at classification, or other generalization that would serve as a basis for determining what should or could be done for persons who were disfigured with the presence of different forms of supernumerary teeth. In recent years it has occurred to me that this sub ject has been neglected, and that the general profession has not sufficient information regarding it to properly attend to the cases presenting in their practice. The publications thus far do not give that information, and the cases occurring to the practitioner in conducting an Ordinary practice are not sufficient in number or variety to give him information that will serve as a sufficient guide. This has been forced upon my attention by circumstances that have become prominent. First: The number of cases referred to me to know what ought to be done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1908, Vol. 22: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The principal symptom is the pain, similar to the chronic dento alveolar inflammation, which in fact always coexist in a certain degree. The pain is local and reflex; the root is painful to percussion; the overlying gum tissue is slightly more red than normal, but is not painful to the touch; the root is very loose. A good symptomatic sign is afforded by the flowing of a sero-purulent liquid from the radicular canal and it can not be stopped by any means. The anti septic canal dressing is useless. B-ut such a fact is common also to canal perforations, but then the perforation can be detected, the root is not painful to the touch and a dressing with alum stops the dis charge. Unilocular Cysts - Congenital or not, the unilocular cysts after reaching a certain volume do not excite any pain. They are equally common in both jaws. They usually are not any larger than a man darin, but occasionally they can reach the volume of a child's head. According to its volume and consequently the more or less destruction of' the bony wall, the palpation gives a sense of hardness or fluctuation or the peculiar parchment-like crepitation. In general they are not movable at their nares. The oral mucus is movable upon the tumor and is stasio. If the tumor has a fistula, caused usually by the ex traction of the root in causa, the round form of the cavity and its dimension can be detected with an explorator. The condition of the dental system is important. If the cyst is noncongenital, the teeth in connection with it are decayed and loose. If the cyst is congenital we must look for the trouble which caused it during the evolution of the teeth. We can find malpositions or absence of teeth. The disease is local and generally health is not injured. Some of the symptoms are in relation with the origin and seat of the cyst. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Summary, 1904, Vol. 24 The observations made have partly been upon the teeth Of my own patients, and partly upon those of the patients of other practitioners who have fallen into my hands. It frequently happens that upon excavating an occlusal cavity there will be found numerous grooves or convolutions in the enamel aside from the usual fissures. These may be of such form as to demand that the cutting shall extend nearly to the points of the cusps, otherwise small elevations or foot hills of enamel will remain at the cavity margin. In such case if the depredations of caries do not demand removal, I have had satisfactory results from the use of a Leaming's. Vulcan Carborundum wheel number 470. Its small diam eter and rounded cutting face enable it to quickly grind away the enamel to a smooth concavity. The cavity may be less extended yet sufficiently so and the filling presents a more agreeably outlined contour when finished.'
