Those who have followed my practice at King's College Hospital during the year and a half in which this dressing has been employed, will agree with me that we have secured a constancy of aseptic results which has more than ever justified the performance of Operations once quite unwarrantable. Tendency to necrosis exists at all times of life, but especially in early youth, when it is most destructive and less amenable to treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Office and Laboratory, 1889, Vol. 3 Salol. Stamford, Conn. - The refreshing flavor you desire in your tooth wash may be produced by the oil of peppermint, or spear mint, or preferably a mixture of the two. Some other Oil may be added with good effect. We suggest a mixture of peppermint 30 parts, spearmint 15 parts, clove 5 parts. Taking the two first as a basis, many other pleasant combinations can be made. Our clothing, Is no doubt generally too heavy. We would feel much more comfortable with less clothing if we subjected ourselves to more cold baths and severe rubbing, and if we inured ourselves more to the vicissitudes of the weather. Our skin needs invigorating and toughening, and the circulation toning, so that, instead of being enervated, delicate house plants, we can take the blasts of winter and call them good. For the twelve years we lived in Minnesota, we did not wear a flannel undershirt, and the only extra clothing for out door exposure was a shawl. The 13 essays in this book have been written by a diverse group of scholars united by a common interest in creating a new field - the sociology of technology. They draw on a wide array of case studies - from cooking stoves to missile systems, from 15th-century Portugal to today's Al labs - to outline an original research program based on a synthesis of ideas from the social studies of science and the history of technology. Together they affirm the need for a study of technology that gives equal weight to technical, social, economic, and political questions"--Back cover.

With clear explanations of the entire field, from rent control and the rise and fall of businesses to the international balance of payments, this is the first book for anyone who wishes to understand how the economy functions. Book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting

Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.

Download or read book Eliza Calvert Hall written by Lynn E. Niedermeier and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1907, author, poet, essayist, and folk art historian Eliza Calvert Hall (1856–1935) published Aunt Jane of Kentucky, a collection of stories about rural life infused with the spirit and gentle good humor of its elderly narrator, Aunt Jane. The book and several sequels achieved wide popularity, reaching an estimated one million readers in her lifetime, and placed Hall in the front ranks of “local color” fiction writers of her time. Eliza Calvert Hall’s life and work unfolded during a time of restlessness and change for American women. Born Eliza “Lida” Calvert in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Hall experienced the upheaval of both the Civil War and family scandal. Forced to help support her mother and four siblings by teaching school, she became a published poet, adopting her grandmother’s name, Hall, as her pseudonym. At twenty-nine, she married William A. Obenchain, and in the space of eight years gave birth to four children. As Hall struggled to balance her writing career with the duties of a nineteenth-century wife and mother, suffragist Laura Clay was lobbying for every woman’s right to vote. Hall joined the battle, writing fearlessly in support of suffrage and equality. While her passionate essays served as a direct appeal for this cause, her creative writing also carried a feminist spirit, celebrating the strength, humor, love, and art of the common woman. In Eliza Calvert Hal: Kentucky Author and Suffragistl, Lynn E. Niedermeier tells the story of this remarkable Kentuckian for the first time. Hall’s challenge was to balance the artist’s creative ambitions with the crusader’s passion for achieving the goal of political equality for American women. Her successes did not stem from privilege or leisure; although she was an acclaimed writer, Hall was an ordinary woman, a wife and mother of moderate economic means. Through the power of her words, she challenged others to match her courage, independence, intellectual energy, and loyalty to her sex.
