Soon her elegant form was lost to the view of the deep-plotting Vicensio; who, when he heard the closing of the distant portals, laid his right hand on the altar, and solemnly swore to be revenged of Isabella De Tracy. The statue of the Holy Mother started at his horrid oath, while from each marble tomb in the chapel burst a melancholy groan, which deep sounded in the ears of Leonardi. "Groan on, and start," he furiously exclaimed, "portends and prodigies are lost on me, use your arts, ye mouldering bone*, and you, inanimate represenative of the immaculate Virgin, may raise your arms arms again, and look with horror on me, I fear not all that you can do." Dark grew the chapel; a murky cloud hung before the large casement; but by the still small glimmering of light Leonardi beheld himself surrounded by tall skeletons, who waved their fleshless arms for him to depart. Combining original readings of familiar texts with a rich store of historical sources, A Geography of Victorian Gothic Fiction is an historicist survey of nineteenth-century Gothic writing--from Dickens to Stoker, Wilkie Collins to Conan Doyle, through European travelogues, sexological textbooks, ecclesiastic histories and pamphlets on the perils of self-abuse. Critics have thus far tended to concentrate on specific angles of Gothic writing (gender or race), or the belief that the Gothic 'returned' at the so-called fin de siècle. Robert Mighall, by contrast, demonstrates how the Gothic mode was active throughout the Victorian period, and provides historical explanations for its development from late eighteenth century, through the 'Urban Gothic' fictions of the mid-Victorian period, the 'Suburban Gothic' of the Sensation vogue, through to the somatic horrors of Stevenson, Machen, Stoker, and Doyle at the century's close. Mighall challenges the psychological approach to Gothic fiction which currently prevails, demonstrating the importance of geographical, historical, and discursive factors that have been largely neglected by critics, and employing a variety of original sources to demonstrate the contexts of Gothic fiction and explain its development in the Victorian period.

Book excerpt: Rather than focus on the attraction exerted by the Mediterranean South on Northerners in search of health, pleasure, leisure and culture, the contributors to this book choose to bring out its less enticing aspects and the repugnance these induced in northern Europeans over four centuries, through a series of sixteen essays covering a geographical area stretching from Portugal to Turkey and Lebanon, from the Balkans to Egypt, and embracing several cultures, two religious faiths and very diverse populations. Most of them were read at an international conference held in Nice in April 2012, and were substantially revised for publication in this volume. All contributions centre around the manner in which British, German (and American) travellers, tourists, writers, thinkers, all members of Protestant modernizing nations rapidly rising in political and economic power reacted to their physical, or merely intellectual, encounter with a Mediterranean world whose pure light, warm sunshine and marvellous scenery could not make them overlook the fact that the glories of the classical past were now “set in the midst of a sordid present” (George Eliot in Middlemarch) and that the successors, possibly the descendants, of the Romans in the countries of the South were sunk in poverty, religious superstition and racial degeneracy. What emerges from these studies that draw on a variety of primary sources is nothing but cruelty, decrepitude, ignorance and obscurantism. With its dark side exposed, the Mediterranean bears little resemblance to the “exquisite lake,” the fons et origo of form and harmony, to which E. M. Forster compared it in A Passage to India. Beyond the portrayal of horrors, however, all essays attempt to unravel the historical conditions and the nexus of mentalités that determined or inspired the perception, imagination or representation of a dark Mediterranean and Near-Eastern world. Not only do they make a useful contribution to the elaboration of the Mediterranean as an intellectual construct, but their original angle of vision offers a valuable addition to the intellectual and cultural history of the North, telling more, perhaps, about the values, prejudices and certainties of northern Europeans than about the true nature of the Mediterranean South.

We were strongly influenced by how the civilians faced the many shortages and upheavals of their former lives. To the contrary, ensuring a fountain of plenty for the soldiers existence was the military PX minishopping center. I and others must confess to abusing the privileges afforded by the generous handout it made available. Cigarettes, chocolate, chewing gum, coffee, sugar, and other basic elements (no alcohol) provided cash for us. None of these basic necessities were available to civilians. As a result, intensive small-scale black marketeering was inevitable. Survival demanded it. For our customers, it made life tolerable. For us it gave access to much of lifes guilty pleasures what we missed most, good food, some fun, liquor, and female companionship. Yes, they were the basic human drives, but understandably and undeniably still human; not the time for self-critiquing, or so we thought. Some of my adventures finally led me to my future Sicilian wife, who taught me the true meaning of steadfast affection. Her laborious travels following my movements through war from Italy convinced me and finally led to her joining me in New York. Visions of home were never far. There is no place like home never had truer meaning.
