Book The Democratization of Education in Sweden

Download or read book The Democratization of Education in Sweden written by Sixten Marklund and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trends within the educational system of Sweden which increase the existence and/or potential of democratization are examined in this monograph. The process of democratization is interpreted as referring to educational objectives such as equal opportunity, as well as to structural changes within the system which increase the likelihood that stated goals will be achieved. The document is presented in nine chapters. Chapter one introduces the scope of the study (elementary and secondary education, higher education, and adult/continuing education). Chapter two explains how the comprehensive school system was introduced and examines how students are channeled into different courses of study according to their interests and abilities after basic education is completed at age 16. Chapters three and four focus on some of the problems of this differentiation process, including equal opportunities for both sexes, separation according to theoretical and/or practical orientation, changing a track after an extended period of time in one study program, and variation of standards among schools. Chapter five elaborates on extra provisions for underprivileged populations. Chapters six and seven examine the relationship between school and working life and analyze how parents, community groups, educators, and administrators can work together more cooperatively. Chapter eight investigates recurrent education. The final chapter summarizes preceeding chapters. Conclusions are that although some evidence is found of equalization of educational opportunities (i.e., the between-school differences in educational standards have been reduced and access to upper-secondary education has been increased), most advances toward a democratized education have come about as a result of measures taken to democratize Swedish society at large. Book Popular Education Power and Democracy

Download or read book Popular Education Power and Democracy written by Ann-Marie Laginder and published by Niace. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular education, a distinctive Swedish tradition of lifelong learning, has always concerned itself with the relationship between learning, power, and democracy in society, rather than having a purely individualistic and instrumental approach to learning for employability, which has dominated policy and practice. Through the themes of power and democracy, this book examines popular education's contribution to enhancing people's lives in communities. It reflects on the wider significance and explores the impact on the political culture of the state and the cultural politics of society within and outside Sweden, including the US, Japan, Canada, and Tanzania. As a comprehensive and unique collection, the book balances historical reflection, contemporary issues, and the international impact of popular education, combining theoretical analysis and empirical data. *** ...this book provides a wonderful introduction to the historical development and some of the current aspects and examples of Swedish popular education, both in Sweden and beyond....Its various chapters show the continued relevance of popular education approaches to addressing major educational and social issues and their diversity and rich theoretical grounding provide enough stimuli to engage educators and practitioners alike....a key resource in the worldwide struggles for social justice by demonstrating how education can be both (a) a tool for social change as well as for personal transformation and (b) how insights gained from others' actions and struggles can be used by people the world over. -- Tom Nesbit, Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education, in the European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults, 2013

Book Nordic Models For A Democratic School

Download or read book Nordic Models For A Democratic School written by Janne Holmén and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nordic Models for a Democratic School" analyzes the efforts to create a democratic and equal society by the means of educational reform in Sweden and Finland 1960-2020, based on official print and earlier research. Of special concern is how the inherent contradiction between democracy and rule of law - the principle of the Rechtsstaat - has affected the development. For historical and geopolitical reasons, the balance between these principles has been different in Sweden and Finland. Swedish democratic development has been society-oriented rather than individual-oriented, without any real counterweight against the popularly elected politicians' influence over society, including the school system. In Finland, the powers of government have been limited by the mechanisms of the Rechtsstaat, with a decentralized state and more independent civil servants, including teachers. These differences in political culture have profoundly influenced the realm of education. Sweden has experienced continuous reforms, gives priority to democracy in the value bas of curricula, and emphasizes the schools function as a transmitter of values. Finland has experienced rare but revolutionary bursts of reforms, emphasizes human rights in the value base of curricula, and gives priority to the school's role as a transmitter of knowledge.

Book Education Society and Politics in Sweden Monograph

Download or read book Education Society and Politics in Sweden Monograph written by Robin J. Burns and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interrelationships among the educational, social, and political systems of Sweden are examined, with particular emphasis on the recent trend toward internationalization. Sweden is described in general terms as a highly industrialized, technologically-advanced nation with a high standard of living, far-reaching welfare policies, and high levels of bureaucratization and taxation. Sweden's political system, which has been dominated by the socialist policies and ideology of the Social Democratic party since 1932, has taken seriously its mandate to inculcate children, youth, and adults with the predominantly socialist goals and ideals of Swedish society. Because this inculcation has taken place largely within the formal educational system, the author believes that an examination of educational objectives and practices will result in a clearer understanding of Swedish society. Review of major educational innovations in Sweden since the 1700's indicates that the trend toward internationalization is reflected in a variety of ways, including democratization of education; increase in the number of immigrant students (including political refugees, foreign workers, and children of foreign workers); increase in the number of courses at all educational levels on Sweden's role in the modern world; expansion of programs involving international technical and financial assistance to developing nations; increase in the amount of educational research on international topics; and generous government funding of international affairs institutes such as the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The conclusion is that there is a close correspondence between the Socialist and international aims and philosphy of Sweden's society, educational system, and political system. (DB)

Download or read book Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education written by Magnus Dahlstedt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education provides a wide perspective on the dramatic transformation of education policy in Sweden that has taken place during the last 30 years, with a specific focus on marketization. The marketization of education in Sweden is set in the wider international context of changes in education systems. With contributions from researchers across a wide range of scientific disciplines, the book provides examples of the consequences of market orientation in education in terms of increase in inequality as well as in terms of what the market orientation means for principals, teachers and students. It considers how Sweden has developed one of the most marketized education systems in the world and the possible consequences of such processes, as identified by research. Neoliberalism and Market Forces in Education will be of great interest to educational practitioners, politicians, scholars in the field, and postgraduate and research students in education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education has become a mega-topic in both political and scientific debate. Developments in systems of higher education and changes in the governance of this field have been discussed in the literature. Such changes are brought about by collective actors within institutional settings. The present volume directs attention at Social Democratic governments in Sweden and in Germany, specifically in North-Rhine Westphalia in the latter case, and at the policies of higher education they have enacted from the mid-1960s to the year 2000. The empirical basis for this study is a qualitative analysis of such policy documents as inaugural speeches, governmental bills and recommendations of expert groups. The focus of the policies has shifted during the decades that were analysed from an input- to an output-orientation and from addressing issues of class to addressing those of gender segregation. These shifts are discussed against the background of a governmentís need for legitimation and the impact of intermediate actors on policy development.

Book excerpt: What unites the contributors to this book is an opposition to Thatcherite policies on education and an agreement upon the need for the development of democracy in education. This volume highlights the importance of an area of neglected theoretical and practical concern: the development of a critique of the philosophy and policies of the new Right, and of credible alternative policies.

Book Education and the Scandinavian Welfare State in the Year 2000

This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This significant contribution to comparative education presents an authoritative discussion of the recent changes in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The implementation of a democratic educational policy in Scandinavia has been affected by the dominance of the Protestant Church, mass immigration from Third World nations, a growing belief in rugged individualism, newfound respect for privatization and the market economy, and the increasing unemployment of the technical revolution. Education has been unable to adapt rapidly enough to meet the changing needs of this transformed Scandinavia. In this comprehensive collection of articles, contributors present their findings, thoughts and concerns for the Scandinavia of both the 90s and the future.
