Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Greene (also wrote as R. G.) (1558-1592) was an English author and well-known personality. He became perhaps the first professional author in England, publishing autobiography, plays, romances, and in other genres while capitalizing on a scandalous reputation. By 1583 Greene had begun his literary career with the publication of a long romance, Mamillia. He continued to produce romances written in a highly wrought style, reaching his highest level in Pandosto (1588) and Menaphon (1589). Short poems and songs incorporated in some of the romances gave him high rank as a lyrical poet. By rapid production of such works Greene became one of the first authors in England to support himself with his pen. In his notorious Coney-Catching pamphlets, Greene fashioned himself into a well-known public figure. In addition to prose romances, he composed numerous moral dialoguess, and even some scientific writings. Amongst his other works are A Notable Discovery of Coosnage (1591), Greene s Groats-Worth of Wit (1592), The Second and Last Part of Conny-Catching (1592), The Thirde and Last Part of Conny-Catching (1592) and The Honourable Historie of Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay (1594).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967. This volume has grown out of a study of a number of Elizabethan pamphlets dealing with rogues and vagabonds, the most important of which are the Conny-catching series of Robert Greene and the Catteat for Commm Cursetors of Thomas Harman. 'Conny-catching' was an Elizabethan slang word for a particular method of cheating at cards, but it came to be used in a general sense for all kinds of tricks by which rogues and sharpers beguiled simple people of their money. The books are vivid and well written, and they picture an elaborately organized profession of roguery with a language of its own and a large number of well-defined. Methods and traditions.

Download or read book The Essential Shakespeare written by J. Dover Wilson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1932-01-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dover Wilson (1881-1969) was a renowned scholar of Renaissance drama, particularly known for his work on Shakespeare. Originally published in 1932, this book, in accordance with its subtitle, takes the form of an interpretative 'adventure' through Shakespeare's life. In the absence of biographical detail, Wilson provides us with a personal perspective that is nevertheless rigorously faithful to the known facts regarding the life, the plays and the surrounding historical context. More broadly, the text is also concerned with the question of how a poetic or creative talent is manifested and nurtured. This concise and highly readable volume will be invaluable for anyone with an interest in Shakespeare, literary criticism, or the history of English literature.
