This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Deerslayer is the last entry in what has become known as the Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper. This final look back at the story at the title character actually named Natty Bumppo (but more often referred to as Hawkeye) and his Mohican comrade Chingachgook takes place in the familiar environs of the wilderness territory in New York. The narrative surrounds an exciting showdown with members of the Huron tribe who have abducted a young woman from Delaware to whom Chingachgook is engaged. The cast is rounded out by what might well be interpreted as a prescient precursor to the stereotype of the grizzled old prospector-grizzled old trapper Thomas Hutter-and his two stepdaughters: the simple-minded Hetty and her haughty sister Judith.

The cast is rounded out by what might well be interpreted as a prescient precursor to the stereotype of the grizzled old prospector-grizzled old trapper Thomas Hutter-and his two stepdaughters: the simple-minded Hetty and her haughty sister Judith.Published in 1841-a century after the time period portrayed in the novel-the story looks back on the Deerslayer's moment of truth in transforming into a man of action as he confronts not just the violence of the untamed world around him, but the violence of the untamed humanity around him as well. In this way, The Deerslayer becomes a novel about initiation into contemporary rites and rituals of manhood. Other themes touches upon are the conflicting values that pit man and against man. While action and theme are handled with Cooper's steadfast familiarity, the overriding sensation many readers take away is a firm grasp upon the reality of the setting of mid-18th century colonial America and the grit and determination required to carve out a modern country from such a savage wilderness.

Book excerpt: First published in 1841, "The Deerslayer" was the last of James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" to be written. Chronologically set first the novel introduces the reader to the hero of the series, the young frontiersmen Natty Bumppo. In this prequel to the later "Leatherstocking Tales," Natty, the "Deerslayer", is at Otsego Lake in central, upstate New York, during the years 1740-1745, a time in which the French and Indian Wars were beginning and the advance of civilization began to dominate the landscape of New York State. The story revolves around the conflict that arises between Natty and the Huron tribe when he and his friend Chingachgook attempt to rescue Henry March and Tom Hutter, who have been taken as prisoners by the Huron for attacking and scalping members of the tribe. Absorbing and realistically detailed, "The Deerslayer" is both a romantic adventure and a fascinating glimpse of the colonies in the decades before the American Revolution. The savage violence of the time is contrasted in moving prose with the breathtaking landscape of the New World. This thrilling tale of early American frontier life and adventure completes James Fenimore Cooper's saga of the "Leatherstocking Tales". This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Deerslayer by James Fenimore Cooper The Deerslayer was the last of James Fenimore Cooper. This novel introduces Natty Bumppo as "Deerslayer": a young frontiersman in early 18th-century New York, who objects to the practice of taking scalps, on grounds that every living thing should follow "the gifts" of its nature, which would keep European Americans from taking scalps. Two characters who actually seek to take scalps are Deerslayer's foil Henry March (alias "Hurry Harry") and the former pirate 'Floating Tom' Hutter, to whom Deerslayer is introduced en route to a rendezvous with the latter's lifelong friend Chingachgook (initially apparent in The Last of the Mohicans). Shortly before the rendezvous, Hutter's residence is besieged by the indigenous Hurons, and Hutter and March sneak into the camp of the besiegers to kill and scalp as many as they can; but are captured in the act, and later ransomed by Bumppo, Chingachgook, and Hutter's daughters Judith and Hetty. Bumppo and Chingachgook thereafter plan to rescue Chingachgook's kidnapped betrothed Wah-ta-Wah (alias 'Hist') from the Hurons; but, in rescuing her, Bumppo is captured. In his absence, the Hurons invade Hutter's home, and Hutter is scalped alive. On his deathbed, he confesses that Judith and Hetty were not his daughters by birth, and Judith determines to discover her natural father's identity; but her search reveals only that her late mother had been of aristocratic descent, and had married 'Floating Tom' after the collapse of an illicit affair. Later, Judith attempts and fails to rescue Deerslayer; and they are all saved at last when March returns with English reinforcements, who massacre the Hurons and mortally wound Hetty. After Hetty's death, Judith proposes marriage to Deerslayer, but is refused, and is last described as the paramour of a soldier. Fifteen years later, Bumppo and Chingachgook return to the site, to find Hutter's house in ruins.

"The Deerslayer" was published in 1841, the last published of Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" saga. Chronologically, it is set before the other tales and thus first in the series. In recent years it has been viewed as the "prequel" to the Leatherstocking Tales. "The Deerslayer" is of course Cooper's indomitable frontier hero, Natty Bumppo, sometimes called "Hawkeye," "Pathfinder," "Leatherstocking" or the Scout, seen here as a young frontiersman in the vicinity of New York's Lake Otsego, barely staying ahead of the advance of the British colonial settlements. Against the background of Cooper's vivid descriptions of the frontier and the wilderness, the Deerslayer and his loyal friend Chingachgook become embroiled in the conflict between the Huron tribe and Tom Hutter, the keeper of a deep secret, and his two daughters, Judith and Hetty, living on a houseboat on the lake, and Henry "Hurry Harry" March. Through a series of forest skirmishes, flights, escapes, and rescues, Cooper creates a complex picture of the inhabitants of the frontier, red and white. Although criticized many years after the fact for his "stereotypical" characters, clearly Chingachgook is a more noble figure than either Hutter or March, and Bumppo explains that some of the conduct of the Indians regarded by whites as "savage" or "brutal," such as scalp taking, is part of the cultural "natural gifts" of the red man, but does in fact constitute unwarranted savagery when practiced by whites such as Hutter and March, as their culture has no such history. With the publication of "The Spy" in 1821, James Fenimore Cooper became an international figure and the first authentic American novelist, free of the forms and conventions of the British fiction of the day. With "The Leatherstocking Tales" he became the first great interpreter of the American experience, chronicling the adventures of the indomitable Natty Bumppo, known variously as "Hawkeye," "Deerslayer," "Pathfinder," "Leatherstocking" and other names, from the colonial Indian wars through the early expansion into the vast western plains. Published between 1823 and 1841, beginning with "The Pioneers" and ending with "The Deerslayer," the tales are set against historical events ranging from 1740 to 1804, with Cooper taking some literary license with the actual chronology of events, probably to avoid having Bumppo ranging the Great Plains at over 90 years of age. This edition of "The Deerslayer" is the last in a new series of the complete Leatherstocking Tales to be released by Summit Classic Press in 2012.
