Book The Tomb of Parennefer Butler of Pharaoh Akhenaten

Download or read book The Tomb of Parennefer Butler of Pharaoh Akhenaten written by Susan Redford and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theban Tomb 188 is the sole archaeological site in the ancient Theban necropolis securely dated to the reign of the “heretic pharaoh” Akhenaten (1353–1336 BCE). The result of several years of clearance and recording by Dr. Susan Redford, director of the Akhenaten Temple Project’s Theban Tomb Survey, this richly illustrated book provides a detailed description of the remaining wall scenes and texts of this historically important ancient monument. In the fourteenth century BCE, Pharaoh Akhenaten attempted to institute a radical religious reform and moved his capital city to Amarna. This book publishes important evidence related to the Amarna period in ancient Egypt, specifically the plans, reliefs, and inscriptions of Theban Tomb 188, belonging to Parennefer, the tutor and butler of the king. Dr. Redford’s detailed archaeological study traces the rapid evolution of ideology, iconography, and iconoclasm, as revealed in Parennefer’s tomb. The decoration kept pace with the momentous changes in the king’s thinking, so that, when dovetailed with the pictorial evidence from the excavations of the great Gem-pa-aten temple at Karnak, it becomes possible to chronicle these rapid changes. This definitive study of the tomb of Parennefer will appeal to archaeologists, Egyptologists, historians of religion, and art historians working on the ancient Near East.

Book The Shrine of Eileithyia Minoan Goddess of Childbirth and Motherhood at the Inatos Cave in Southern Crete Volume I The Egyptian Type Artifacts

Download or read book The Shrine of Eileithyia Minoan Goddess of Childbirth and Motherhood at the Inatos Cave in Southern Crete Volume I The Egyptian Type Artifacts written by Gunther Holbl and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a catalog of the ancient Egyptian imports and Egyptianizing artifacts found in 1962 during the excavation of a cave near Tsoutsouros (ancient Inatos), Crete, Greece. The cave was a sanctuary dedicated to the Minoan and Greek goddess Eileithyia. The Aegyptiaca of the Minoan and Mycenaean eras on Crete signify the political and economic relations between the Aegean rulers and the Egyptian royal court. Several of the objects are Egyptian scarabs, and they certainly represent official Egyptian-Cretan affairs, especially those dating from the reign of Amenophis III to the end of the Eighteenth Dynasty. Much of the cataloged objects come from the 10th to 7th centuries B.C., and they are appropriate for venerating the goddess of childbirth and motherhood. The statuettes, seals, and vessels are lavishly illustrated with plates of color photographs.

Book Corpus of Inscriptions of the Herakleopolitan Period from the Memphite Necropolis

Download or read book Corpus of Inscriptions of the Herakleopolitan Period from the Memphite Necropolis written by Khaled Abdalla Daoud and published by British Archaeological Reports (Oxford) Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines in detail a specific group of inscribed material from the Memphite necropolis. The material dates to the late Old Kingdom-Herakleopolitan Period, and comes from tombs belonging to officials of various ranks and social standing. Some ofthe stelae and other inscribed fragments, offering tables, side pieces, and blocks have been published, while others are looked at here for the first time. This book, however, is the first work to bring all this material together as comprehensively as possible in order to fully assess its extent and importance. It investigates the distribution of the Herakleopolitan Period cemeteries in the vast necropolis of Memphis; analyses each individual cemetery and its development through this period;and exploresthe architectural remains of the chapels of the period to cast light on their design. A major focus is the examination of the tomb stelae, their orientation, development, and their inscriptions in comparison with contemporary stelae fromprovincial cemeteries, particularly Dendara, Naga-ed Deir, Akhmim, Ashmunein, Asyut, Edfu and Thebes.
