Download or read book Nuclear Submarine Decontamination Proceedings Of The International Seminar On Nuclear War And Planetary Emergencies 22nd Session written by Klaus Goebel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-07-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Umbilical cord blood, previously discarded, has emerged as a new source of stem cells for hematologic reconstitution, bone marrow failures and other hematologic deficiencies. It has become increasingly clear that umbilical cord tissue contains unique stem cells of great potential for regenerative medicine. Importantly, umbilical cord blood is abundant, can be banked and transported with ease, and thus has an indisputable potential for future regenerative therapies. Driven by a massive interest for regenerative medicine and ethically acceptable stem cell sources, the scientific literature on umbilical cord stem cells has exploded. This book provides a consolidated overview of basic, translational as well as clinical research in academic institutions and industry, on hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells contained within umbilical cord tissue, as well as other more recently discovered stem and precursor cells of not yet fully elucidated potential. Although not discussed here, umbilical cord cells have been successfully reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells (iPS), opening the door for a vast array of applications with this abundant human material likely catapulting cord-derived stem cells to the forefront of cell-based regenerative medicine.Suitable as a primer and reference book for medical fellows and researchers, this book can also be used by students (undergraduate and graduate) as a starting point into the vast literature on stem cells and their potential.
Download or read book Gray Matter written by David Levy and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy’s decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request. Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient’s diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer “request.” From there, readers get to look over Dr. Levy’s shoulder as he performs the operation, and then we wait—right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their families—to see the final results. Dr. Levy’s musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we watch him come to his ultimate conclusion that no matter what the results of the procedure are, “God is good,” we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.
Download or read book Management of Legionella in Water Systems written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.

Download or read book A Textbook of Perioperative Care written by Kate Woodhead and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2005-05-18 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woodhead and Wicker's new text will be the foremost reference source for all perioperative practitioners. The content mirrors the dynamics of modern perioperative practice by focusing on surgical interventions in all the environments in which it is currently practised, including A&E departments, general practice clinics, intensive care units, and at the site of serious accidents. Theatre practice is becoming increasingly specialist; this book does not attempt to to reflect the needs of all specialties, but instead concentrates on the principles of practice, applicable to any setting and any specialty. It has a very practical focus - it aims to be the book that nurses and ODPs reach for in order to answer their practical questions - but is not be procedure-driven. Instead, it sets out the principles of perioperative practice, from which practitioners will be able to develop their own practice techniques. Reflects principles of practice, applicable to any perioperative environment Strong practical focus Edited by two of the biggest 'names' in the international perioperative nursing sphere, with contributions from other well-known and authoritative sources Excellent opportunities to develop links with the National Association of Theatre Nurses and the European Operating Room Association The team of contributors are experienced practitioners working directly with perioperative patients or in perioperative education An original model for ethical practice is proposed: the Reid model is the first such ethical model to be proposed for the perioperative environment Includes one of the only chapters in any perioperative book which specifically focuses on the care of the elderly. The research chapter encourages the use of evidence based practice and the development of perioperative research The unique chapter on care of the mentally ill will support practitioners who are not qualified in psychiatry to care for mentally ill patients. This is an area where there is a great information deficit Key points listed for each chapter Sections have been completely revised from previous edition - key subject areas now stand-alone chapters rather than sections within much larger chapters - creates ease of access for user Change of editorship Recognises the diversity of perioperative environments much more explicitly than previous edition
