Book Decision Management

Download or read book Decision Management written by J. Frank Yates and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-02-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do the people in some companies continually dazzle us with their brilliant decisions while those in others make one blunder after another? Do they understand their businesses better? Are they just plain smarter? Or is it all a matter of luck? The answer, says J. Frank Yates, is none of the above. The real key, rarely recognized, is how the leaders manage the company's decision processes—the leaders' decision management practices. Drawing on his thirty years of research and experience as well as scholarship from psychology, economics, statistics, strategy, medicine, and other fields to explain the fundamental nature of business decision problems, Yates highlights the ten cardinal decision issues crucial to managing the decision-making process—and ultimately better company decisions. He covers problems ranging from recognizing whether a decision is actually called for to assuring that a preferred course of action will be implemented. He shows how solid decisions result when managers ensure that deciders resolve every cardinal issue effectively for every decision problem facing the company. He also reveals how, conversely, chronically poor decisions are traceable to managers allowing—or even creating—conditions that encourage deciders to fall short in how they address at least one of those critical issues.

Book Automata and Computability

Book excerpt: Automata and Computability is a class-tested textbook which provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the theory of automata and computation. The author uses illustrations, engaging examples, and historical remarks to make the material interesting and relevant for students. It incorporates modern/handy ideas, such as derivative-based parsing and a Lambda reducer showing the universality of Lambda calculus. The book also shows how to sculpt automata by making the regular language conversion pipeline available through a simple command interface. A Jupyter notebook will accompany the book to feature code, YouTube videos, and other supplements to assist instructors and students Features Uses illustrations, engaging examples, and historical remarks to make the material accessible Incorporates modern/handy ideas, such as derivative-based parsing and a Lambda reducer showing the universality of Lambda calculus Shows how to "sculpt" automata by making the regular language conversion pipeline available through simple command interface Uses a mini functional programming (FP) notation consisting of lambdas, maps, filters, and set comprehension (supported in Python) to convey math through PL constructs that are succinct and resemble math Provides all concepts are encoded in a compact Functional Programming code that will tesselate with Latex markup and Jupyter widgets in a document that will accompany the books. Students can run code effortlessly href="https://github.com/ganeshutah/Jove.git/"here.

Book The American Campaign Second Edition

Download or read book The American Campaign Second Edition written by James E. Campbell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting data and predicting trends through the 2008 campaign, this classroom-tested volume offers again James E. Campbell’s “theory of the predictable campaign,” incorporating the fundamental conditions that systematically affect the presidential vote: political competition, presidential incumbency, and election-year economic conditions. Campbell’s cogent thinking and clear style present students with a readable survey of presidential elections and political scientists’ ways of studying them. The American Campaign also shows how and why journalists have mistakenly assigned a pattern of unpredictability and critical significance to the vagaries of individual campaigns. This excellent election-year text provides: a summary and assessment of each of the serious predictive models of presidential election outcomes; a historical summary of many of America’s important presidential elections; a significant new contribution to the understanding of presidential campaigns and how they matter.

Book How does corporate culture influence the effective transfer of knowledge

Download or read book How does corporate culture influence the effective transfer of knowledge written by Philipp Stangohr and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2000-05-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The main question investigated in this European Research Project is whether corporate culture presents the biggest obstacle to knowledge management. To better answer this question two sub-questions are formulated: How does corporate culture influence the transfer of knowledge? and What are the key elements in a corporate culture that facilitate the process of knowledge transfer? In order to answer these questions this study contains three parts: the literature review, the field research, and analysis and discussion. The literature review explains the concepts of knowledge management and culture, discussing the relevant theories to each of the two. In the second part the methodology as well as the research site are stated and justified. Subsequently the results of the four case studies conducted are presented. The third part of this study analyses and interprets the findings with reference to the literature in order to answer the research questions. The limitations of the study will be discussed and recommendations for further research are offered. Last but not least, implications for the professional practice are pointed out. Corporate culture clearly influences the transfer of knowledge. This influence is exerted by some key elements as proposed by T. Davenport and L. Prusak (1998), such as trust between the knowledge provider and the knowledge receiver, shared language, (un)structured time and meeting places, the willingness to share, the willingness to apply 'foreign' knowledge, and the willingness to judge knowledge objectively. This research confirms that these elements are indeed vital and no additional elements could be identified. However, some components seem to be more influential than others. It is likely that their relative importance varies according to the industry investigated. Elements which do not pose any problems in the consulting industry, such as the willingness to apply 'foreign' knowledge and the objective judgement of knowledge, could probably present significant problems in other industries. It is advisable to look at these elements independently from the research site. According to these elements, the consulting industry is generally judged to be conducive to the transfer of knowledge, the obstacles faced in this industry appear to be of a more operational nature. This appears to be an evolutionary process. In the beginning corporate culture presents the main obstacle to knowledge management. [...]

Book Introduction to Natural Resource Planning

Download or read book Introduction to Natural Resource Planning written by Charles Yoe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exciting time for natural resources planning. There are amazing technologies available to planners and a wide and growing array of resources, problems, and opportunities that need attention. Private and public interests are taking up these issues all over the world and at all levels of involvement. At the same time, inefficient planning policies and procedures can threaten the art of successful planning. Demonstrating how to put effective planning theory into practice, Introduction to Natural Resource Planning introduces an iterative planning process with five steps and two ongoing processes. Suitable for any type of planning setting, the book describes each step of the planning process in extensive practical detail. Comprising field-tested strategies woven into a comprehensive and complete protocol, the book explores: Planners and the planning process Establishing the decision context, gathering evidence, plan formulation, and evaluating, comparing, and selecting plans The importance of public involvement Telling your story so that people understand and care about it Dealing effectively with uncertainty as part of the planning process Scenario planning when uncertainty obscures the future Economics for planners: cost estimates and economic analysis Fast planning and getting the most out of your planning process Practical tips from experienced natural resource planners Natural resources planning involves solving complex problems. Fascinating new issues continue to emerge as we seek to identify and preserve natural DNA, struggle with invasive and nonindigenous species, and worry about the well-being of native and managed pollinators. Meanwhile, we continue to struggle with familiar problems like water quality, developing resources for wise uses, loss of habitat, and floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. This volume will empower both experienced and new planners to plan more effectively for solutions to preserve and manage our natural resources.
