Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of thirteen codices found in upper Egypt near Nag Hammadi in 1946 is one of the major archaeological discoveries of our time. Apparently the library of a Gnostic community in late antiquity, the codices are a repository of important spiritual materials from throughout the ancient world. Hence a thorough analysis of this new material is indispensable for any proper understanding of the history of religions in this period. The rich documentation which the codices add to early Coptic text material promises to raise to a new precision the historical analysis of that language.|This edition presents collotype reproductions in natural size of all folios of the thirteen codices as well as reproductions of the covers and photographs previously taken of fragments that are now lost.

Download or read book Pervert s Progress written by Joseph Weigel and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that we aren’t supposed to be able to know what a man or woman is today and why are children being deceived about these basic categories? Pervert’s Progress answers these and a host of other questions. This book traces the intellectual roots of Queer Theory from Marx to more recent figures like Herbert Marcuse and Michelle Foucault and the development of sex education is explored all the way back to Alfred Kinsey and his pedophilic experiments. Finally, the occult origins and orientation of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) are examined. But it doesn’t end in despair. By drawing from some of the most foundation works of the West, including those of both Athens and Jerusalem, a path of hope is provided.
Download or read book The Shadow of Dionysus written by Michel Maffesoli and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maffesoli presents a powerful argument for understanding everyday life by examining the passional logic that animates the social body. He asserts that the circulation of sexuality, as much as the circulation of goods and services or language, is a structural component of sociality. By examining the dionysian adventure (passion, bonds of shared emotion, communal feeling), he redefines the problems of sociality and the strong hedonistic ethics present in contemporary daily life.

Download or read book The Great Ethics of Aristotle written by Peter L. P. Simpson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this follow up to The Eudemian Ethics of Aristotle, Peter L. P. Simpson centres his attention on the basics of Aristotelian moral doctrine as found in the Great Ethics: the definition of happiness, the nature and kind of the virtues, pleasure, and friendship. This work's authenticity is disputed, but Simpson argues that all the evidence favours it. Unlike the Nicomachean and Eudemian Ethics, Aristotle wrote the Great Ethics for a popular audience. It gives us insight less into Aristotle the theoretician than into Aristotle the pedagogue. For this reason, the Great Ethics has distinct advantages as an introduction to Aristotelian ethical thinking: it is simpler and clearer in its argumentation, matters such as the intellectual virtues are made suitably secondary to the practical focus, the moral virtues come through with a pleasing directness, and the work's syllogistic formalism gives it a transparency and accessibility that the other Ethics typically lack. Arius' Epitome, which relies heavily on this work, helps confirm its value and authenticity. Because the Great Ethics is generally neglected by scholars, less has been done to clear up its obscurities or to expose its structure. But to ignore it is to lose another and more instructive way of approaching and appreciating Aristotle's teaching. The translation is prefaced by an analytic outline of the whole, and the several sections of it are prefaced by brief summaries. The commentary supplies fuller descriptions and analyses, sorting out puzzles, removing misunderstandings, and resolving doubts of meaning and intention. This book is a fresh rendition of the work of the preeminent philosopher of all time.
