Book excerpt: Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face to face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth? This short novel was the artistic culmination of a profound spiritual crisis in Tolstoy's life, a nine-year period following the publication of Anna Karenina during which he wrote not a word of fiction. A thoroughly absorbing and, at times, terrifying glimpse into the abyss of death, it is also a strong testament to the possibility of finding spiritual salvation.

"Usually classed among the best examples of the novella", The Death of Ivan Ilyich tells the story of a high-court judge, and his sufferings and death from a terminal illness in 19th-century Russia. Ivan Ilyich lives a carefree life that is "most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible". Like everyone he knows, he spends his life climbing the social ladder. Enduring marriage to a woman whom he often finds too demanding, he works his way up to be a magistrate, thanks to the influence he has over a friend who has just been promoted, focusing more on his work as his family life becomes less tolerable. While hanging curtains for his new home one day, he falls awkwardly and hurts his side. Though he does not think much of it at first, he begins to suffer from a pain in his side. As his discomfort grows, his behavior towards his family becomes more irritable. His wife finally insists that he visit a physician. The physician cannot pinpoint the source of his malady, but soon it becomes clear that his condition is terminal. Confronted with his diagnosis, Ivan attempts every remedy he can to obtain a cure for his worsening situation until the pain grows so intense he is forced to cease working and spend the remainder of his days in bed. Here, he is brought face to face with his mortality, and realizes that although he knows of it, he does not truly grasp it.

Plot Summary: Ivan Ilyich lives a carefree life that is "most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible". During the long and painful process of death, Ivan dwells on the idea that he does not deserve his suffering because he has lived rightly. If he had not lived a good life, there could be a reason for his pain; but he has, so pain and death must be arbitrary and senseless. As he begins to hate his family for avoiding the subject of his death, for pretending he is only sick and not dying, he finds his only comfort in his peasant boy servant Gerasim, the only person in Ivan's life who does not fear death, and also the only one who, apart from his own son, shows compassion for him. Ivan begins to question whether he has, in fact, lived a good life.

Book The Death of Ivan Ilych illustrated

Download or read book The Death of Ivan Ilych illustrated written by Leo Tolstoy and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Death of Ivan Ilyich has been classified as the best example of a novella ever written. Leo Tolstoy remains one of the greatest writers to put pen to paper, revolutionizing the form of the novel, the short story, and with Ivan Ilyich, the novella. The story revolves around the titular Ivan Ilyich Golovin, who has discovered that he will die. Ivan is a well-liked official, but he has spent his life pursuing his career, eschewing his domestic life. Forced to confront his mortality, Ivan has the time to consider his life and discovers he has fled from an authentic life. Ivan has turned away from his wife, his daughter, and his son, and the lack of any real connection with them only exacerbates the pain of his impending demise. Only through conversation with the simple peasant boy Geresim does Ivan find some solace, and that realization allows him to find a new joy in his last moments. Tolstoy wrote Ivan Ilyich late in his career, well after his major novels Anna Karenina and War and Peace. His religious and philosophical convictions shine through in this work, showing how Tolstoy has developed a deep understanding of the meaning of life itself. Tolstoy moved away from novels with daunting page-counts towards more accessible, but no less profound, works of fiction, such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Although the subject of the novella may be macabre, the story gives hope for a better life for us all.

Book excerpt: Mortally injured after a fall, Ivan Ilyich questions the fairness of his pain and suffering—if pain can strike a man such as himself, who has lived a just life, then his pending death can only be arbitrary. It is only through the deathbed ministrations of his servant, Gerasim, that Ivan embraces the idea of an authentic life in which compassion is valued above self-interest, and thereby frees himself from his fear of dying. Download or read book The Death of Ivan Ilych written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2011-05-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no explanation. Written eight years after the publication of Anna Karenina—a time during which, despite the global success of his novels, Leo Tolstoy renounced fiction in favor of religious and philosophical tracts—The Death of Ivan Ilych represents perhaps the most keenly realized melding of Tolstoy’s spirituality with his artistic skills. Here in a vibrant new translation, the tale of a judge who slowly comes to understand that his illness is fatal was inspired by Tolstoy’s observation at his local train station of hundreds of shackled prisoners being sent off to Siberia, many for petty crimes. When he learned that the sentencing judge had died, Tolstoy was roused to consider the judge’s thoughts during his final days—a study on the acceptance of mortality only deepened by the death, during its writing, of one of Tolstoy’s own young children. The final result is a magisterial story, both chilling and beguiling in the fullness of its empathy, its quotidian detail, and the beauty of its prose, and is, as many have claimed it to be, one of the most moving novellas ever written. The Art of The Novella Series Too short to be a novel, too long to be a short story, the novella is generally unrecognized by academics and publishers. Nonetheless, it is a form beloved and practiced by literature's greatest writers. In the Art Of The Novella series, Melville House celebrates this renegade art form and its practitioners with titles that are, in many instances, presented in book form for the first time.
