This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prometheus and Agamemnon of Aeschylus Translated Into English Verse How highly those tastes were cultivated is evident from the capacity of the people, from the highest to the lowest, to enjoy poetry of such a nature as the Greek dramas, purely ideal, aesthetical, and appealing less directly than that of any other school to tho ordinary tastes or passions of a multitude. To the representation, therefore, of these dramas before an audience at once so large, so fastidiously critical, and so refined, every member of which lived constantly and plied his daily labors in the midst of those masterpieces of sculptural art which in our times are shut up in galleries and enjoyed almost exclusively by the rich, and was thoroughly qualified to pronounce on matters now understood by a few only, a corresponding scale of magnitude and style of magnificence were essential. For dramas, the patrons of which were the immortal Gods, the subjects the deeds of demigods and heroes, and the spectators a nation, theatres were required of colossal proportions. And such were the theatres of the Greeks; gigantic edifices of the most symmetrical design and the most solid materials, capable of accommodating so many as thirty thousand persons, rising tier above tier of marble seats, topped and inclosed by lofty porticos, adorned by statues wrought by such hands as those of Phidias and Myron, surmounted by balustraded terraces, and roofed by the azure vault of heaven. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agamemnon of AEschylus: Translated From the Greek, Illustrated by a Dissertation on Grecian Tragedy, &C It is only necessary to add, that, although the majority of English readers can hardly be' supposed to have time or inclination to peruse voluminous translations of the Grecian dramatists, they may be interested by having their attention directed to the finest specimen of the class, and such the Author has long deemed the Agamemnon. Others of the Greek tragedies might be pointed out, more perfect in their artificial structure, and more faultless in their diction; but in general grandeur of conception, in sublime imagery, in thrilling pathos, and in moral elevation, it perhaps transcends them all. Book The Agamemnon of Aeschylus

Download or read book The Agamemnon of Aeschylus written by Aeschylus and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agamemnon is the first play in Aeschylus' trilogy about the chain of murders that took place in the family of Agamemnon after the conclusion of the Trojan War. In Aeschylus' play, Artemis is angry about the young men who will die at Troy. Excerpt: "The sense of difficulty, and indeed of awe, with which a scholar approaches the task of translating the Agamemnon depends directly on its greatness as poetry. It is in part a matter of diction. The language of Aeschylus is an extraordinary thing, the syntax stiff and simple, the vocabulary obscure, unexpected, and steeped in splendor. Its peculiarities cannot be disregarded, or the translation will be false in character. Yet not Milton himself could produce in English the same great music, and a translator who should strive ambitiously to represent the complex effect of the original would clog his own powers of expression and strain his instrument to breaking..."
