Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dearest Spot on Earth Home, Sweet Home How did the world live without it so long What immeasurable solace and sweetness it has added to life during these last seventy-five years! Looked at from this distance, Clari, or the Maid of Milan, of which the song was a part, was a divinely inspired opera. Home, Sweet Home is a language of itself. It is a kind of Esperanto of the soul in which men, strangers to each other, may unite in common worship, he of the cottage and he of the palace, each kneeling at the shrine set up in his own hallowed memory. It is one of those songs that help to make democracy. Its passion is a common one, recogniz ing neither border, nor breed, nor birth. Let our country sing it more and more! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve States and a Kingdom Every possible want had been anticipated. The last few days of our home stay began to pass heavily for our work was finished. The feminine portion of the cargo was ready to be shipped. Can I ever forget my feelings of almost childish delight when my ticket was given me, that elongated talisman that was to be my guide from VV to New York City and return which were the magical wcrds engraved thereon. The various important places we were to touch were arranged like so many coupons measuring a half yard in length, and our imagination clothed them with an interest rightfully their due. I entrusted this treasure (the loss of which would render me undone) to the most secret corner of my purse and breathed a prayer that some innate necromancy might surround it and avert my sudden ejection from the cars at some lone spot for whrch my inclinations were not bound. The ap pointed time ch'ew near. Was there ever such happiness that the shadow of a doubt did not cloud? There was yet the parting from one I held most dear ere I could launch myself on this sea of prospective happiness. One sigh from the bosom I loved best to rest upon, effectually vanquished my carefully constructed air castles and I realized truly that home was the dearest spot on earth to me. I gazed upon my ticket as a fatality, and danger. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America: Our National Hymn Doctor Smith has twice visited the Old World. The first time he spent one year in Europe, and the second more than two years, extending his journey to the Burman empire, and lingering in Madras, Calcutta and Ceylon ln Asia, and in Norway Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, and Spain in Europe. The above stanzas have been given as a natural preface to a slight sketch of Doctor Smith's surroundings in the town where he dwells; for though he speaks in them of the beauties of his whole country, yet it may well be believed that the land scape charms of Newton Centre, as well as forty years of residence there, conspire to make it, for him, the dearest spot in the land. Book Arcadian Visions

Download or read book Arcadian Visions written by Allan R. Ruff and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Arcadia and the pastoral tradition; what it has meant for successive generations and their vision of the landscape, as well as the implications this has had for its design and management. Today the concept of Arcadia, and way it has shaped our landscape, is dimly perceived and little understood by landscape architects and those responsible for the management of land. This is in marked contrast to previous centuries when the vision of Arcadia and the pastoral was implanted by education among the more privileged in society. Young men spent many hours translating and learning by rote the words of Virgil and other classical authors and on the Grand Tour they would be introduced to work of painters like Poussin and Claude and their interpretations of the Ideal pastoral landscape. Today Arcadia holds as powerful an influence as at any time in the past and it is important that we plan our urban environment in ways that harmonize with the natural world. Arcadian Visions provides an alternative landscape history for all those involved with the landscape - either through its design, management, use or enjoyment. It begins by examining the origins of Arcadia and the pastoral in the classical poetry of Theocritus and Virgil, and the effects of, and on, Christianity before outlining its development in renaissance Italy and subsequently in the Netherlands, America and England. It concludes by looking at how Arcadian ecology is bringing about a reappraisal of the pastoral in the 21st century.
