Book The Dean s Murders a Four Corners Mystery

Download or read book The Dean s Murders a Four Corners Mystery written by HP Hanson and published by Author House. This book was released on 2001-03-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dean Harold Weathers has two problems. Someone killed his star chemistry professor, in his laboratory right on campus, no less, after filling his nose up with cocaine. To make matters worse, the suspect list includes Weathers' boss, Provost John Martin, and Professor Linda Harmon, chair of the chemistry department. Weathers finds a silver lining, however, when it becomes clear that Lieutenant Annette Trieri, head of the investigations unit of the Durango Police Department, seems as interested in him as he is in her. But this mutual interest is misunderstood by whoever killed the professor, because now they are trying to kill Weathers, and, for good measure, Trieri as well. Together, the couple manages to stay alive while unraveling the chemistry professor's murder and uncovering a second, more sinister killing to which Weathers is also connected. Campus politics and drug money are a lethal combination in The Dean's Murders.

Book excerpt: HP Hanson's Four Corners Mysteries from 1stBooks Library The Dean's Murders (2000) "Fresh and lively...delivered through prose that is clean and fluid...a crackershot story. Weathers is so well characterized that he reminded me of some of my favorite professors from college." (Writer's Digest) Classical Villainy (2001) "A well-developed story...with a well-constructed plot that is...a pleasure to follow. Perhaps Hanson has rightly seen that the next unexplored territory in Southwestern mysteries might be the unfathomable peculiarities of the Anglo." (Santa Fe New Mexican) And now... The Four Corners region is swept by a wave of serial murders, murders so professional that they remain unconnected for months. A Nazi prison-camp diary, mailed to a wealthy industrialist, describes gruesome medical experiments on inmates. A rag-tag band of environmental activists turns to arson as a means of self-expression. Nothing makes much sense until detective Annette Trieri joins the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to take the case. With suitably academic help from her favorite Dean, Hal Weathers, she uncovers a conspiracy that extends deep into the Colorado legislature and places the US President in mortal danger. Ultimately, she finds a way to corral the people behind Excess Homicide.

Book excerpt: This Life Guide is designed for use in conjunction with the Generation One music CD (www.profilesproject.com) in either group or individual study. In group settings, the Life Guide lends itself favorably to a small group ministry of a church, as well as a sermon series a pastor might devote to the lives of the apostles. If the Life Guide is used in a small group setting, it will become apparent that the material on each disciple is perhaps more than can be covered in one meeting, so the group leader may want to select what he or she thinks are the most relevant and appropriate questions for the group's discussion. Similarly, if a pastor chooses to preach a series on the lives of the apostles, although he will want to do his own Biblical studies, he will find a wealth of information in the Life Guide biographical sections on each of the apostles. Again, for the needs and interests of his church, he may choose to tailor his messages to cover key aspects of a disciple's life as it best fits the needs and interests of his church. For each of the disciples in the Life Guide, a biography of each disciple is given, followed by discussion questions (Discussion) which seeks to address different Biblical themes taken from each of the disciple's lives. These questions are then followed by quotes (Expressions) from various authors in the Christian tradition that generally relate to the themes previously addressed in the discussion questions. Following the quotes, several Scriptural passages are provided (Meditations) for further reflection on each disciple. Each study then closes with an opportunity to prayerfully reflect (Reflections) on certain attributes exhibited by that apostle, in terms of gratitude, mindset, and a personal aspiration.

Book excerpt: Four Corners sleuth Annette Trieri doesn't want it to happen, but it does anyway: she gets sucked into the investigation of a mysterious death in the Arizona desert, a death that hits close to home because the victim graduated from Frémont State University, where Annette's husband is Dean of Natural Sciences. It's one of his students who's dead. With her newly minted PhD and a prestigious post-doctoral appointment at the Ecological Archive Research Center near Tucson, Melody Witherspoon has a bright future, bright, that is, until her body turns up half-buried in the Center's research greenhouse. Everything looks neat and clean when the local sheriff, preoccupied with re-election, takes the low road and arrests an undocumented worker from Mexico-case closed. Or is it? Annette can see that there is more to the story, and her investigation takes her places that Melody's family and friends in the small community of Durango just don't want to know about. Corruption in the sheriff's office, a stalker among Melody's co-workers, and academic politics also confuse the issue. But one thing is for sure: the Murder Under Glass needs an explanation, and Annette is the one who has to provide it.

Book excerpt: What? A serial killer who decapitates his victims, then displays the heads on roadside fence-posts? What century is this, anyway? But it's real, and the lonely back roads of Southwestern Colorado will never be the same. After the third victim is discovered, the Governor calls in Colorado Bureau of Investigation detective Annette Trieri, and she has some catching up to do. More heads turn up, and the pressure mounts to find the killer. But the crime scenes reveal nothing, the victims have little in common, and the locations are hundreds of miles apart. Annette's investigative team at the CBI provides background, and her footwork leads her to a dealer in antique armaments and a kendo master who lives for the way of the sword. A radical feminist group at Frémont State University voices sympathy for the killer, even offers to assist. The mayor of a small mountain town disappears. The Governor is beside himself. Ultimately, it's up to Annette and her academic husband, Dean Hal Weathers, to assemble the puzzle pieces and find the killer who has a Head for Murder.

Book excerpt: Evoking Krakauer's Into the Wild, Dan Schultz tells the extraordinary true story of desperado survivalists, a brutal murder, and vigilante justice set against the harsh backdrop of the Colorado wilderness On a sunny May morning in 1998 in Cortez, Colorado, three desperados in a stolen truck opened fire on the town cop, shooting him twenty times; then they blasted their way past dozens of police cars and disappeared into 10,000 square miles of the harshest wilderness terrain on the North American continent. Self-trained survivalists, the outlaws eluded the most sophisticated law enforcement technology on the planet and a pursuit force that represented more than seventy-five local, state, and federal police agencies with dozens of swat teams, U.S. Army Special Forces, and more than five hundred officers from across the country. Dead Run is the first in-depth account of this sensational case, replete with overbearing local sheriffs, Native American trackers, posses on horseback, suspicion of vigilante justice and police cover-ups, and the blunders of the nation's most exalted crime-fighters pursuing outlaws into territory in which only they could survive.

Then the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Annette Trieri moves in and dead bodies start turning up. A developer who thrives on controversy, a muck-raking writer, and a community leader all die under circumstances that, at first, look innocent. But inconsistencies pique Annette's suspicion, and she finds that they're all tied to water in general and the Front-Range Associated Water Board in particular, predators from across the mountains with designs on the valley's future. Book excerpt: The third book in an amazing series that features crime à la library at America's most famous institution of higher reading. A note from bartender Brian McNulty, Raymond Ambler’s friend, confidant, and sometimes adviser, sets the librarian sleuth off on a murder investigation, one that he pursues reluctantly until a second murder upends the world as he knows it. The second victim is a lady friend of McNulty’s—and the prime suspect is McNulty himself. As Ambler pursues his investigation, he discovers that the murdered woman had a double life. Her intermittent visits to the city—a whirlwind of reckless drinking and illicit liaisons with men she met in the cocktail lounges—had their counterpart in suburban Fairfield County Connecticut where, as Dr. Sandra Dean, she practiced dermatology and lived in a gated community with a doting husband and a young daughter. While Ambler looks into the past of Dr. Sandra Dean to understand the murder of Shannon Darling in the present, NYPD homicide detective Mike Cosgrove investigates the men in Shannon Darling’s life. She might have been murdered because she frustrated the wrong man. It could have been a jealous wife. In fact, any number of people might have murdered Shannon Darling. Or, as Ambler suspects, did someone murder Dr. Sandra Dean? Yet, no matter which way he turns, McNulty emerges as a suspect. Ambler’s dilemma seems insurmountable: Should he keep searching for the truth behind the murders if the deeper he probes, the more evidence he finds that points to the morally rumpled bartender as a murderer?
