It documents the surprisingly extensive legacy of cultural, architectural, and genealogical resources from 1733 as a colony of Denmark until its sale with the islands of St. Thomas and St. John in 1917 to the United States. The tragic use of enslavement of Africans brought here to work in sugar cane fields temporarily enriched the European owners but emancipation took place in 1848. The Danish imprint on the culture has led to a surprising friendship between the islanders and Denmark with many conciliatory initiatives and large tourism and scholarly interests from Danes, creating a mood of mutual acceptance and support unusual between a former colony and its owners. The book contains a translation into Danish of all the essays by the author Nina York , a native of Denmark and resident of St. Croix since 1976. The book chronicles the author's life as a professional guide and a distinguished 23-year military career, including time spent as a member of the 7th ARCOM from 1993 until 2004. Growing up on a farm in southwest Idaho, Dawson graduated from the Greenleaf Friends Academy in 1974 and worked as a diesel mechanic, spending his spare time with horses. Dawson eventually met a wilderness outfitter and was offered a job as a guide. He spent several seasons as a guide in the Salmon River Wilderness Area in central Idaho, before moving to Denmark. Dawson joined the 25th Army Band, Idaho National Guard in 1983, eventually transferring to the 104th Division, changing to MOS 11B, and becoming a drill Sergeant in the Army Reserve, and then transferring to the 321st Combat Engineers. After moving to Denmark, the author transferred to the 7th Army Reserve Command (ARCOM) and went on to earn the Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star following assignments in Bosnia, Ukraine, Kosovo, Kuwait, and Iraq. Guide's Life chronicles the author's adventures, experiences and trials during these 23 years of service. Mikel W. Dawson grew up a country boy in rural Idaho. Following a distinguished career in the military, the author now resides in Lintrup, Denmark where he runs his own business shoeing horses. But the term has been understood in many different ways: political boundaries; fuzzy lines across which trade, religions and ideas cross; attitudes to other peoples and their customs. This book draws attention to the differences between the medieval and modern understanding of frontiers, questioning the traditional use of the concepts of 'frontier' and 'frontier society'. It contributes to the understanding of physical boundaries as well as metaphorical and ideological frontiers, thus providing a background to present-day issues of political and cultural delimitation. In a major introduction, David Abulafia analyses these various ambiguous meanings of the term 'frontier', in political, cultural and religious settings. The articles that follow span Europe from the Baltic to Iberia, from the Canary Islands to central Europe, Byzantium and the Crusader states. The authors ask what was perceived as a frontier during the Middle Ages? What was not seen as a frontier, despite the usage in modern scholarship? The articles focus on a number of themes to elucidate these two main questions. One is medieval ideology. This includes the analysis of medieval formulations of what frontiers should be and how rulers had a duty to defend and/or extend the frontiers; how frontiers were defined (often in a different way in rhetorical-ideological formulations than in practice); and how in certain areas frontier ideologies were created. The other main topic is the emergence of frontiers, how medieval people created frontiers to delimit areas, how they understood and described frontiers. The third theme is that of encounters, and a questioning of medieval attitudes to such encounters. To what extent did medieval observers see a frontier between themselves and other groups, and how does real interaction compare with ideological or narrative formulations of such interaction?

This image – and the tensions involved in it – structure the triangular relation between the EU, Greenland and Denmark. The central Other of Greenland has for a couple of centuries been Denmark, the colonial overlord. The national identity discourses of Greenland and Denmark both idealize national homogeneity. A central condition for a continuation of Rigsfællesskabet, the 'community of the realm' including Greenland and Denmark, is the idea that Greenland still needs external assistance in its development towards independence - and that this idea can be formulated in a way which does not infantilize Greenland metaphorically. As part of the postcolonial diversification of Greenland's dependency, the bilateral relation between Denmark and Greenland has gradually been opened up to involve 'other others'. Meanwhile, a discourse prognosticates that climate change is opening up the Arctic to minerals extraction and commerce. In these circumstances, the triangular relation with the EU is played out as a series of rhetorical and practical 'sovereignty games', in Nuuk, Copenhagen and Brussels. Particularly, a number of strategies are employed to minimize the apparent role of Denmark for the Greenlandic relations to the EU. The book approaches these changes in national identity discourse and practical foreign policy in five analytical steps: The core concepts organizing Danish and Greenlandic identity are identified in discourse analyses. Political debates are read as political identity negotiations. The practical diplomatic management of clashing identity discourses is uncovered via qualitative interviews with key actors (politicians, diplomats, and civil servants from Greenland, Denmark and the EU). Legal texts are approached as the 'frozen' outcome of rhetorical and practical sovereignty games. Finally, the book develops scenarios for the future and concludes by pointing out how the continuation of the community of the realm may have a better chance if conceived as an 'ever looser union'. One way for Denmark of facilitating this image would be to employ its diplomacy in the service of diversifying Greenland's dependence - following the example set in relation to the EU.
