Book Cookbook Politics

  • Author : Kennan Ferguson
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2020-05-29
  • ISBN : 0812252268

Download or read book Cookbook Politics written by Kennan Ferguson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and eclectic view of cookbooks as political acts Cookbooks are not political in conventional ways. They neither proclaim, as do manifestos, nor do they forbid, as do laws. They do not command agreement, as do arguments, and their stipulations often lack specificity — cook "until browned." Yet, as repositories of human taste, cookbooks transmit specific blends of flavor, texture, and nutrition across space and time. Cookbooks both form and reflect who we are. In Cookbook Politics, Kennan Ferguson explores the sensual and political implications of these repositories, demonstrating how they create nations, establish ideologies, shape international relations, and structure communities. Cookbook Politics argues that cookbooks highlight aspects of our lives we rarely recognize as political—taste, production, domesticity, collectivity, and imagination—and considers the ways in which cookbooks have or do politics, from the most overt to the most subtle. Cookbooks turn regional diversity into national unity, as Pellegrino Artusi's Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well did for Italy in 1891. Politically affiliated organizations compile and sell cookbooks—for example, the early United Nations published The World's Favorite Recipes. From the First Baptist Church of Midland, Tennessee's community cookbook, to Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, to the Italian Futurists' proto-fascist guide to food preparation, Ferguson demonstrates how cookbooks mark desires and reveal social commitments: your table becomes a representation of who you are. Authoritative, yet flexible; collective, yet individualized; cooperative, yet personal—cookbooks invite participation, editing, and transformation. Created to convey flavor and taste across generations, communities, and nations, they enact the continuities and changes of social lives. Their functioning in the name of creativity and preparation—with readers happily consuming them in similar ways—makes cookbooks an exemplary model for democratic politics.

Book excerpt: Alan Burton, a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, chronicles the team's forty-five year history in a collection of more than five hundred quips and quotes from players, coaches, owners, broadcasters, and writers Organized chronologically, the quotations provide a colorful record of the ups and downs of one of the best-known franchises in professional sports--and "must" reading for the die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan A few examples: Tom Landry on his Flex defense: "It is designed to stop every play on the line of scrimmage. This is the theory, you have to remember, not necessarily the result." Lineman Jim Boeke on quarterback Don Meredith: "If Meredith had led us over a cliff, I would have been the first one to follow. He was that great a leader Linebacker D. D. Lewis on Texas Stadium: "Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch his favorite team play Caustic commentator Howard Cosell: "The Cowboys are the most overrated, overhyped team in professional football." Sportswriter Bob St. John on Roger Staubach's clean-cut image: "His idea of breaking training is putting whipped cream on his pie." A convicted murderer shortly before his execution: "I am thankful to the Dallas Cowboys for giving me a lot of enjoyment the past years." Lineman Nate Newton: "Remember this--there's the Cowboys, and then there's the rest."

Download or read book Texas Eats written by Robb Walsh and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who says cooking is for homebodies? Veteran Texas food writer Robb Walsh served as a judge at a chuck wagon cook-off, worked as a deckhand on a shrimp boat, and went mayhaw-picking in the Big Thicket. As he drove the length and breadth of the state, Walsh sought out the best in barbecue, burgers, kolaches, and tacos; scoured museums, libraries, and public archives; and unearthed vintage photos, culinary stories, and nearly-forgotten dishes. Then he headed home to Houston to test the recipes he’d collected back in his own kitchen. The result is Texas Eats: The New Lone Star Heritage Cookbook, a colorful and deeply personal blend of history, anecdotes, and recipes from all over the Lone Star State. In Texas Eats, Walsh covers the standards, from chicken-fried steak to cheese enchiladas to barbecued brisket. He also makes stops in East Texas, for some good old-fashioned soul food; the Hill Country, for German- and Czech-influenced favorites; the Panhandle, for traditional cowboy cooking; and the Gulf Coast, for timeless seafood dishes and lost classics like pickled shrimp. Texas Eats even covers recent trends, like Viet-Texan fusion and Pakistani fajitas. And yes, there are recipes for those beloved-but-obscure gems: King Ranch casserole, parisa, and barbecued crabs. With more than 200 recipes and stunning food photography, Texas Eats brings the richness of Texas food history vibrantly to life and serves up a hearty helping of real Texas flavor.

Book This Is Our Message

  • Author : Emily Suzanne Johnson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-01-04
  • ISBN : 0190618949
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book This Is Our Message written by Emily Suzanne Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 50 years, the architects of the religious right have become household names: Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson. They have used their massively influential platforms to build the profiles of evangelical politicians like Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry, and Ted Cruz. Now, a new generation of leaders like Jerry Falwell Jr. and Robert Jeffress enjoys unprecedented access to the Trump White House. What all these leaders share, besides their faith, is their gender. Men dominate the standard narrative of the rise of the religious right. Yet during the 1970s and 1980s nationally prominent evangelical women played essential roles in shaping the priorities of the movement and mobilizing its supporters. In particular, they helped to formulate, articulate, and defend the traditionalist politics of gender and family that in turn made it easy to downplay the importance of their leadership roles. In This Is Our Message, Emily Johnson begins by examining the lives and work of four well-known women-evangelical marriage advice author Marabel Morgan, singer and anti-gay-rights activist Anita Bryant, author and political lobbyist Beverly LaHaye, and televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. The book explores their impact on the rise of the New Christian Right and on the development of the evangelical subculture, which is a key channel for injecting conservative political ideas into purportedly apolitical spaces. Johnson then highlights the ongoing significance of this history through an analysis of Sarah Palin's vice presidential candidacy in 2008 and Michele Bachmann's presidential bid in 2012. These campaigns were made possible by the legacies of an earlier generation of conservative evangelical women who continue to impact our national conversations about gender, family, and sex.
