The International Geophysical Year coincided with the timing of this trans-polar crossing. As a part of this, New Zealand set about establishing a scientific station in Antarctica. Warren was a member of Sir Edmund Hillary's Ross Sea Party and a geologist. While on the ice he completed pioneering geological and topographical explorations over a huge area.

He sailed from Davisville, Rhode Island to spend eighteen months in Antarctica with the IGY expedition as part of a U.S. Navy-supported scientific expedition to establish Ellsworth Station on the Filchner Ice Shelf. Innocents on the Ice is a memoir based on Behrendt’s handwritten journals, looking back on his daily entries describing his life and activities on the most isolated of the seven U.S. Antarctic stations. Nine civilians and thirty Navy men lived beneath the snow together, and intense personal conflicts arose during the dark Antarctic winter of 1957. The author describes the emotional stress of the living situation, along with details of his parties’ explorations of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf system during the summers of 1957 and 1958. Along the hazardous 1,300-mile traverse in two Sno-Cats, the field party measured ice thickness and snow accumulation as part of an international effort to determine the balance of the Antarctic ice sheet, and made the first geological observations of the spectacular Dufek Massif in the then-unexplored Pensacola Mountains. Behrendt also draws upon his forty years of continual participation in Antarctic research to explain the changes in scientific activities and environmental awareness in Antarctica today. Including photos, maps, and a glossary identifying various forms of ice, Innocents on the Ice is a fascinating combination of the diary of a young graduate student and the reflections of the accomplished scientist he became.

This book will prove useful to geophysicists and researchers who are interested in the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year.

Book excerpt: Climatic summaries for several sites on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, and selected locations on the Greenland ice sheet were analyzed to determine the type of weather that can be expected in these areas during the summer months. Daily minimum and maximum air temperatures of from 0 to 25F are estimated to occur near 82.5 degrees S and 166 degrees W during December, January and February on the Ross Ice Shelf. Snowfall in summer is relatively infrequent and total amounts generally light, so that extended periods of good flying weather can be expected in summer. However, intervals of poor weather, including heavy snow, fog, whiteout and strong winds with drifting and blowing snow can occur each summer. Average minimum and maximum air temperatures during June, July and August range from 8F to above freezing in the southern portion of the Greenland ice sheet and from -9 to 17F near the summit. Stations east of the crest record light winds from the north and northeast, and those west of the crest stronger winds from the east. Winds near South Site at 63 degrees N in mid-summer are predicted to be generally westerly and to average 9 to 10 mph. Snowfall and fog also apparently occur more frequently in the southern region of the ice sheet. Although good flying weather can be expected during much of the summer near the summit, intervals of snow, fog, whiteout or strong winds with drifting or blowing snow can occur.
