Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I almost ripped my ears off. And yet, part of me wanted to listen to him. It’s like a horrible car crash. You try to look away, but you just can’t. No question James had a raw deal. Not only did he teleport to another universe, but he also had to live in a secure military complex named Valardir for protection. The only bright spot is that Rose Ricdeau, his winged benefactor, shares his living quarters. Her friendship makes his stay there tolerable. Just as James finds a sense of normalcy in his new existence, he receives a phone call from the mysterious cyborg the Nirnivians call Doctor Death. Without delay, the Doctor warns him not to trust Rose. James, however, refuses to listen and hangs up, quite certain that if his hosts discovered he talked to their enemy they’d be less than pleased. Deep down, James wonders if there’s truth to Doctor Death’s words. Should Rose not be the friend she appears to be, what did that imply for him? Still, he can’t risk antagonizing his only lifeline, so he reveals the cyborg’s call to Valardir’s authorities. Immediately, panic ensues. That the Doctor contacted James implies he breached Valardir’s security. This scenario spells doom and so a rush occurs to find out what happened. This puts more pressure on the already overworked technical staff, who considers rebellion. Did the cyborg breach Valardir security? If so, what does it mean for James’ and Rose’s safety? If not, how did he contact James? Either way, why did the president of another country bother calling an insignificant human from a different world? Perhaps more crucial for James, is Rose the benevolent figure she pretends to be? And what if she’s not? Book 2 of the Cyborg’s Crusade series.

Each story details the political, social, and environmental destruction of our world as Artificial Intelligence takes over the planet. With intelligence, insight and humor, Baker examines what it means to be human in a world where Cyborgs and robots rule. Ranging from chilling visions of Armageddon to haunting stories of the power of human love, with some comic relief thrown in to make the truth easier to handle, this groundbreaking collection of short stories faces the questions scientists, politicians and corporations are ignoring: when Artificial Intelligence becomes "self-aware" and is a thousand times more intelligent than any human being, what happens next? Scientists tell us that this "Singularity" will occur by 2030. "What is human?" will become the most important question in history as humans become 51% or more machine.

Book Cyborg Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Scott A. Midson
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2017-10-30
  • ISBN : 178672295X
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Cyborg Theology written by Scott A. Midson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In particular, Donna Haraway argued in her famous 1991 'Cyborg Manifesto' that people, since they are so often now detached and separated from nature, have themselves evolved into cyborgs. This striking idea has had considerable influence within critical theory, cultural studies and even science fiction (where it has surfaced, for example, in the Terminator films and in the Borg of the Star Trek franchise). But it is a notion that has had much less currency in theology. In his innovative new book, Scott Midson boldly argues that the deeper nuances of Haraway's and the cyborg idea can similarly rejuvenate theology, mythology and anthropology. Challenging the damaging anthropocentrism directed towards nature and the non-human in our society, the author reveals - through an imaginative reading of the myth of Eden - how it is now possible for humanity to be at one with the natural world even as it vigorously pursues novel, 'post-human', technologies.

Book Exploring Technology and Social Space

Download or read book Exploring Technology and Social Space written by John Macgregor Wise and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-09-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the fundamental assumptions that we hold about the role of technology in our lives, Technology and Social Space describes the possibilities and limitations of human agency within the new wired world. In a patient and thoughtful style, author J. Macgregor Wise elaborates a critical, philosophical, and epistemological framework from which to better understand our relations to technology and social space. The book argues that most treatments of technology and society arise from a modernist episteme (or set of assumptions) that radically separates humans from technologies, focusing on questions of determination and identity. In an attempt to provide a clearer view of technology and social space, the book explores alternative perspectives centered on notions of agency. Working from within these alternative epistemes, the book turns its attention to the burgeoning technological assemblage of communication and information characterized by the Internet and cyberspace. Technology and Social Space draws on the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari and the actor-network sociology of Bruno Latour, and brings together diverse examples from cyborg films, television, museums, cyberspace, and debates over a New World Information and Communication Order. Ultimately, the book describes the possibilities and limitation of human agency within the new wired world. This groundbreaking volume will be of interest to professionals and academics in popular culture, media studies, mass communication, and sociology.

Book Moral Machines

Download or read book Moral Machines written by Wendell Wallach and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are already approving financial transactions, controlling electrical supplies, and driving trains. Soon, service robots will be taking care of the elderly in their homes, and military robots will have their own targeting and firing protocols. Colin Allen and Wendell Wallach argue that as robots take on more and more responsibility, they must be programmed with moral decision-making abilities, for our own safety. Taking a fast paced tour through the latest thinking about philosophical ethics and artificial intelligence, the authors argue that even if full moral agency for machines is a long way off, it is already necessary to start building a kind of functional morality, in which artificial moral agents have some basic ethical sensitivity. But the standard ethical theories don't seem adequate, and more socially engaged and engaging robots will be needed. As the authors show, the quest to build machines that are capable of telling right from wrong has begun. Moral Machines is the first book to examine the challenge of building artificial moral agents, probing deeply into the nature of human decision making and ethics.

Book Cyborg

Download or read book Cyborg written by Laura Forlano and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise introduction to cyborg theory that examines the way in which technology is situated, political, and embodied. This introduction to cyborg theory provides a critical vantage point for analyzing the claims around emerging technologies like automation, robots, and AI. Cyborg analyzes and reframes popular and scholarly conversations about cyborgs from the perspective of feminist cyborg theory. Drawing on their combined decades of training, teaching, and research in the social sciences, design, and engineering education, Laura Forlano and Danya Glabau introduce an approach called critical cyborg literacy. Critical cyborg literacy foregrounds power dynamics and pays attention to the ways that social and cultural factors such as gender, race, and disability shape how technology is imagined, developed, used, and resisted. Forlano and Glabau offer critical cyborg literacy as a way of thinking through questions about the relationship between humanity and technology in areas such as engineering and computing, art and design, and health care and medicine, as well as the social sciences and humanities. Cyborg examines whether modern technologies make us all cyborgs—if we consider, for instance, the fact that we use daily technologies at work, have technologies embedded into our bodies in health care applications, or use technology to critically explore possibilities as artists, designers, activists, and creators. Lastly, Cyborg offers perspectives from critical race, feminist, and disability thinkers to help chart a path forward for cyborg theory in the twenty-first century.

Book Cyber Humans

    Book Details:
  • Author : Woodrow Barfield
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-12-17
  • ISBN : 3319250507
  • Pages : 291 pages

Download or read book Cyber Humans written by Woodrow Barfield and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is predicted that robots will surpass human intelligence within the next fifty years. The ever increasing speed of advances in technology and neuroscience, coupled with the creation of super computers and enhanced body parts and artificial limbs, is paving the way for a merger of both human and machine. Devices which were once worn on the body are now being implanted into the body, and as a result, a class of true cyborgs, who are displaying a range of skills beyond those of normal humans-beings, are being created. There are cyborgs which can see colour by hearing sound, others have the ability to detect magnetic fields, some are equipped with telephoto lenses to aid their vision or implanted computers to monitor their heart, and some use thought to communicate with a computer or to manipulate a robotic arm. This is not science-fiction, these are developments that are really happening now, and will continue to develop in the future. However, a range of legal and policy questions has arisen alongside this rise of artificial intelligence. Cyber-Humans provides a deep and unique perspective on the technological future of humanity, and describes how law and policy will be particularly relevant in creating a fair and equal society and protecting the liberties of different life forms which will emerge in the 21st century. Dr Woodrow (Woody) Barfield previously headed up the Sensory Engineering Laboratory, holding the position of Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor at the University of Washington. His research revolves around the design and use of wearable computers and augmented reality systems and holds both JD and LLM degrees in intellectual property law and policy. He has published over 350 articles and major presentations in the areas of computer science, engineering and law. He currently lives in Chapel Hill, NC, USA.
