Book Encyclopaedia of Historical Metrology Weights and Measures

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Historical Metrology Weights and Measures written by Jan Gyllenbok and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Gyllenbok's encyclopaedia of historical metrology comprises the first part of the compendium of measurement systems and currencies of all sovereign states of the modern World (A-I). Units of measurement are of vital importance in every civilization through history. Since the early ages, man has through necessity devised various measures to assist him in everyday life. They have enabled and continue to enable us to trade in commonly and equitably understood amounts, and to investigate, understand, and control the chemical, physical, and biological processes of the natural world. The encyclopeadia will be of use not only to historians of science and technology, but also to economic and social historians and should be in every major academic and national library as standard reference work on the topic.

Book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present

Download or read book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present written by Carol Poster and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once nearly as ubiquitous as dictionaries and cookbooks are today, letter-writing manuals and their predecessors served to instruct individuals not only on the art of letter composition but also, in effect, on personal conduct. Poster and Mitchell contend that the study of letter-writing theory, which bridges rhetorical theory and grammatical studies, represents an emerging discipline in need of definition. In this volume, they gather the contributions of eleven experts to sketch the contours of epistolary theory and collect the historic and bibliographic materials - from Isocrates to email - that form the basis for its study.

Book The Historical Literature of the Jack Cade Rebellion

Download or read book The Historical Literature of the Jack Cade Rebellion written by Dr Alexander L Kaufman and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounts of Jack Cade's 1450 Rebellion-an uprising of some 30,000 middle-class citizens, protesting Henry VI's policies, and resulting in hundreds of deaths as well as the leaders' execution-form the dominant entry in a group of quasi-historical documents referred to as the London chronicles of the Fifteenth Century. However, each chronicle is inherently different and highly subjective. In the first study of the primary documents related to the Cade Rebellion, Alexander L. Kaufman shows that the chroniclers produced multiple representations of the event rather than a single, unified narrative. Aided by contemporary theories of historiography and historical representation, Kaufman scrutinizes the differing representations and distinguishes the writers' objectiveness, their underrated literary skills, and their ideological positions on the rebellion and fifteenth-century politics. He demonstrates how the use of figurative language is related to writing about trauma, and how descriptions of Cade's procession through London are a violent parody of midsummer festivals. In an exploration of authenticity in the descriptions of Cade, Kaufman also examines the characterization and plot devices that push Cade towards the realm of myth, showing that representations of Cade are influenced by popular fifteenth-century stories of Robin Hood.
