Download or read book The Bible in Slavic Tradition written by Alexander Kulik and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains selected papers from an international conference held in 2009 in Varna, Bulgaria. The papers represent major trends and developments in current research on the medieval Slavonic biblical tradition, primarily in comparison with Greek and Hebrew texts. The volume covers the translation of the canonical, apocryphal and pseudepigraphical books of the Old and New Testaments and its development over the ninth to sixteenth centuries. Another focus is on issues relating to Cyril and Methodius, the creators of the first Slavonic alphabet in the ninth century and the first translators of biblical books into Slavonic. The analytical approach in the volume is interdisciplinary, applying methodologies from textual criticism, philology, cultural and political history, and theology. It should be of value to Slavists, Hebraists and Byzantinists.

Download or read book Gospel Midrashim written by Ken Bazyn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-21 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steeped in the great tradition of Christian poetry, Bazyn offers a series of startling and highly personal interactions with the Four Gospels to break open Jesus' teachings and symbolic acts for our everyday lives. His vivid, allusive poems with references to literature, theology, spirituality, liturgy, ethics, history, saints' lives, and legend are loosely arranged around episodes in Christ's exceptional life as the Nativity, the coming of the Magi, the parables, the raising of Lazarus, the transfiguration, the crucifixion, the resurrection, the ascension. Some pieces are meant to be serious and reflective, others light and satirical; some are modern and concrete, others abstract and universal; some are hortatory, others didactic; a few confessional, a few incandescent celebrations. Like David's Psalter, they represent the kaleidoscope of moods symptomatic of our humanity. Via fetching images, Bazyn seeks to entangle you in the reality which is Christ, that true artesian well for our confused and wandering souls. Drawing on the best of Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant thought, this is a genuine gift to the global church. Wide-ranging in its uses, it sits at the boundary of literature and spirituality. Furthermore, it includes footnotes to scriptures (and a Scripture index) to enhance your meditation
Download or read book The Secret Gospel of Mark Unveiled written by Peter Jeffery and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1958, Bible scholar Morton Smith announced the discovery of a sensational manuscript-a second-century letter written by St. Clement of Alexandria, who quotes an unknown, longer version of the Gospel of Mark. When Smith published the letter in 1973, he set off a firestorm of controversy that has raged ever since. Is the text authentic, or a hoax? Is Smith’s interpretation correct? Did Jesus really practice magic, or homosexuality? And if the letter is a forgery . . . why? Through close examination of the "discovered” manuscript’s text, Peter Jeffery unravels the answers to the mystery and tells the tragic tale of an estranged Episcopalian priest who forged an ancient gospel and fooled many of the best biblical scholars of his time. Jeffery shows convincingly that Smith’s Secret Gospel is steeped in anachronisms and that its construction was influenced by Oscar Wilde’s Salomé, twentieth-century misunderstandings of early Christian liturgy, and Smith’s personal struggles with Christian sexual morality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No previous full-scale study has been undertaken so far to study the polemical writings of the Muslim reformist Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935) and his associates in his well-known journal al-Manār (The Lighthouse). The book focuses on the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Christianity during the late 19th and the early 20th century in the light of al-Manār’s sources of knowledge, and its answers to the social, political and theological aspects of missionary movements in the Muslim World of Riḍā’s age. The basis of the analysis encompasses the voluminous publications by Riḍā and other Manārists in his journal. Besides, it makes use of newly-discovered materials, including Riḍā’s private papers, and some other remaining personal archives of some of his associates.
