Download or read book Cursed Are You written by Anne Marie Kitz and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about curses. It is not about curses as insults or offensive language but curses as petitions to the divine world to render judgment and execute harm on identified, hostile forces. In the ancient world, curses functioned in a way markedly different from our own, and it is into the world of the ancient Near East that we must go in order to appreciate the scope of their influence. For the ancient Near Easterners, curses had authentic meaning. Curses were part of their life and religion. They were not inherently magic or features of superstitions, nor were they mere curiosities or trifling antidotes. They were real and effective. They were employed proactively and reactively to manage life’s many vicissitudes and maintain social harmony. They were principally protective, but they were also the cause of misfortune, illness, depression, and anything else that undermined a comfortable, well-balanced life. Every member of society used them, from slave to king, from young to old, from men and women to the deities themselves. They crossed cultural lines and required little or no explanation, for curses were the source of great evil. In other words, curses were universal. Because curses were woven into the very fabric of every known ancient Near Eastern society, they emerge frequently and in a wide variety of venues. They appear on public and private display objects, on tomb stelae, tomb lintels, and sarcophagi, on ancient kudurrus and narûs. They are used in political, administrative, social, religious, and familial contexts. They are the subject of incantations. They are tools that exorcise demons and dispel disease; they ban, protect, and heal. This is the phenomenology of cursing in the ancient Near East, and this is what the present work explores.

But, given the history of short lives and tragic deaths for the Arc family, which of Ana’s offspring are destined to have abrupt dates with the Grim Reaper and which ones will create new Arcs that will ensure the future rebirth of the IRF Empire? Book excerpt: A Penguin Classic In Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s beautifully rendered depictions of small yet fateful moments that transform ordinary lives, these twelve early stories introduce both the subject and style of artistic expression that recur in the most important works of his career. Each of these self-contained stories is linked to the others by the presence of the Munroes, a family whose misguided behavior and lack of sensitivity precipitate disasters and tragedies. As the individual dramas unfold, Steinbeck reveals the self-deceptions, intellectual limitations, and emotional vulnerabilities that shape the characters’ reactions and gradually erode the harmony and dreams that once formed the foundation of the community. This edition includes an introduction and notes by James Nagel. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book The Cursed Christ written by Bradley H. McLean and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-05-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of this study, McLean deals with Paul's letters synchronically, critiquing the traditional sacrificial interpretation of Paul's atonement theology and offering an alternative model, previously unexplored in scholarship; the argument is not genealogical, but analogical, drawing on the work of Jonathan Z. Smith. In the second part, McLean describes and builds on the method of John Hurd, studying the development of Paul's soteriology diachronically; Paul's letters are examined in chronological order, and the sociological factors that contributed to each development are examined. Finally, Paul's soteriology is placed against the broader canvas of early Christianity, especially the communities associated with Q and the Gospel of Thomas.

Book Making Merchandise of You

Download or read book Making Merchandise of You written by Daniel Roberts Ph.D and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are we short on honest holy men in the ministries in this generation? Is it the will of God for the believers in Christ to seek after riches? The truth is, God wants us to be happy. He said to Moses Happy are thou, O Israel who is like unto thee, O people saved by the Lord the shield of thy help and who is the sword of thy Excellency! And thy enemies are found to be liars unto thee, and thou shalt tread upon their high places Deuteronomy: 33:29 (KJV). God is the source of our happiness. We have all heard the testimonies of miraculous financial blessing. Can we trust them? Why are few financially delivered and many are not? Why are not all Christians rich? I humbly recommend this book to pastors and ministers and all Christian workers to find peace and joy and contentment as they deal with financial stewardship.

Book Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Heaven and Hell written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over half of Americans believe in a literal heaven, in a literal hell. Most people who hold these beliefs are Christian and assume they are the age-old teachings of the Bible. Ehrman shows that eternal rewards and punishments are found nowhere in the Old Testament, and are not what Jesus or his disciples taught. He recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. Ehrman shows that competing views were intimately connected with the social, cultural, and historical worlds out of which they emerged. -- adapted from jacket

Book Redeeming Productivity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Reagan Rose
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers
  • Release : 2022-10-04
  • ISBN : 0802474632
  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Redeeming Productivity written by Reagan Rose and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeling overwhelmed and unproductive? The answer isn’t to do more. What image forms in your mind when you think of productivity? An assembly line? Spreadsheets? Business suits or workplace uniforms? In the ancient world, productivity didn't conjure images like these. Instead, it referred to crop yield and fruit bearing. This agrarian imagery helps us understand productivity through a biblical lens. Jesus taught, By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit (John 15:8). Who doesn’t want to have a truly productive life—to bear much fruit? But how does this happen in the places we hold dear—the home, workplace, and in our communities? We often feel overworked and overrun, defeated and discouraged. The world says be productive so that you can get all you can out of this life. The Bible says be productive so you can gain more of the next life. In Redeeming Productivity, author Reagan Rose explores how God’s glory is the purpose for which He planted us. And he shows how productivity must be firmly rooted in the gospel. Only through our connection to Christ—the True Vine—are we empowered to produce good fruit. This book shows how we can maintain the vitality of that connection through simple, life-giving disciplines. Readers will discover manageable applications like giving God the first fruits of our days. Additionally, Reagan discusses how our perspective on suffering is transformed as we see trials as God’s pruning for greater productivity.
