Book The Curse of Central Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curse of Central Africa Classic Reprint written by Guy Burrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curse of Central Africa Except on rare occasions, to which I shall hereafter very briefly refer, King Leopold, his counsellors, and their friends abroad have deemed it necessary, when criticised, to do little more than pose as much misunderstood and maligned philanthropists. The mission of the State, according to their view, is so high-minded and majestic as to palliate, if not justify, every evil accidental to it, which may from time to time be disclosed. With a loftiness of tone and unctuous insistence upon the purity and unselfishness Of their intentions, which in a less serious matter would be appropriate subject for ridicule, they have claimed, throughout the world, not only an exclusive prerogative Of superiority to adverse comment, but even a prescriptive right to disregard the ordinary obligations of humanity and organised society. Having closed nearly the whole State to all save Officials and dependents, they have deemed themselves in a position to ignore or laugh to scorn all allegations of wrong-doing which may periodically stir the conscience of Belgium or of the other nations primarily responsible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of Central Africa: A General Account of the Mackie Ethnological Expedition When, however, we had found so generous a patron, other difficulties arose, for the war made the expedition impossible, and, when peace came, travelling difficulties were so great that it was June of 1919 before I finally started. That I got a passage even then was due to the interest of Sir Peter Mackie, who made arrangements with the Clan Line of steamers to carry me and my goods to Africa. I wish here to express my thanks to this firm for the assistance which they rendered to the expedition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Malarial Prophylaxis in Small Isolated Communities in Central Africa Some expense must be incurred, but as this paper shows with an average strength of little more than thirty there is an average saving in invalidings and deaths of 23 per cent. Of workers, the saving in passage money alone would amount to about £120 a year, so that expenditure of a considerably greater amount would still be economical. In the sunny South of our own land are many negro children as like the little negro cousin in Africa as one pea is like another. Years and years ago slave - ships brought to this country negroes, stolen from their own African homes to be the slaves and servants of the white people-here. Now the children and great-grandchildren of these negro slaves are growing up in our country, knowing no other home than this. The home of the great negro race, however, is the Wide continent of Africa, with its deserts of hot sand, its parch ing winds and its tropical forests.
